Publisher's Summary

A razor-sharp novel of suspense about the lies families tell - and those we choose to believe - by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of Jane Doe.

Lauren Abrams wants nothing to do with her damaged mother, whose spurious testimony sent Lauren’s father to prison for murder years ago. After a serial killer’s confession to the crime restored justice, Lauren chose to live with her father and grandmother. Now an adult, Lauren has come home to the Sacramento family estate for good, her mother’s lies be damned...

It’s been decades since Donna made her cheating husband pay, but she hasn’t forgotten the past. She knows her estranged daughter has made a terrible mistake by returning to the estate. There’s more to the story of the welcoming old homestead - and her childhood - than Lauren knows.

As Lauren settles in, she is haunted by the questions of what really happened with her father, what her mother might be hiding, and what secrets the family ranch holds. It’s getting so dark, Lauren may not be able to see the truth to save her life.

Best new release, but they’re all horrible

I’m gonna wrap this up quick:

Narrator- 🙃 not my favorite but good fit for the role.

Entertainment Level- 🥱 moderate.

Believable- 😏 barely.

Suspenseful- 🤔 nooot really... you pretty much know early on, and there’s no real “build-up”... it’s pretty light on drama despite having its toe in dark waters.

Would I recommend: 😬 Decent storyline & everything else, but wouldn’t be my first choice. However, not many good choices to pick from lately.

This after Jane Doe? Sad

Good grief, I keep attempting to finish this book. The narrator has a little girl voice and I can barely hear her when she narrates the male parts. The writing reads like a middle school short story by some dreamy preteen. Boring, no surprises and poorly written. Loved Jane Doe, but I'm embarrassed to have read this.

Excellent

I loved it. I loved the characters and their story. I can't wait to listen to more by this author. The narration was excellent also.

Couldn't finish

The first chapter set in the past was literally unbearable. It sounded like it was recorded on a set of tin cans or something

A Slow and Irritating Read

I found this book to be very slow, and the main character was weak snd childish. The story also jjumped back and forth between two different time periods, which I usually find annoying. The actual story was good, otherwise I would not have finished it.

good

The narrator sounds like an AI. I liked the back and forth of past and present and how perfectly they lined up together until the two stories met. I thought that the book was really good, but they dont quite wrap everything up. It felt like it should have had another scene with her ex boyfriend, amongst a few other things that were kind of left unfinished.

Ending was not what I expected

I love Victoria Helen Stone's books since all her books are unique and so different. This one was good until the ending.

This is not an edge of your seat thriller

The description of the book in my opinion is misleading. With that being said I thoroughly enjoyed the book. This is not an edge of your seat thriller as it is described. It is basically a family with lies and manipulation and so much deception and it plays out through the course of 35+ years. With that being said if you’re in the mood for a slow burn mystery then this is the one for you if you want an edge of your seat from the jump you’re not going to get that. The book did resolve everything in the end so I was pleased with the ending
