Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

But as they investigate, they uncover more than a missing man: a legendary creature connected to the secret of the massacre of Rune's Court. Holy shit that was so good!!!
I’m going to level. I found this book because I was looking for happy gay stories. Gay media is full of tragic horrible stories, and I hate it. Then I found this. The sample made it sound weird. The reviews weren’t detailed so I wasn’t sure about it. I took a chance. This story if freaking awesome! Yes there is a side gay romance in the book. The main story though is of heroism defeating the bad guy who is doing ding messed up shit with his magic. This world is super awesome and I loved the mystery of who the bad guy was and the question of what really all going on behind the scenes. I can’t wait for the next one!!!

Very good, but not excellent
I found this book while searching for an LGBT fantasy where the plot was not driven by the character’s queer identity. To this end, the book was exactly what I hoped it would be. As a big fan of other fantasy gurus (e.g. Sanderson, Rothfuss, etc.), I found the world building to be ultimately satisfying and intriguing, while perhaps not quite at the caliber of the legends. I also thought that the reader was phenomenal and brought each character to life.
However, I found The Last Sun missing the mark in two major respects: the balance of characters, and the dialogue.
First, the character cast was nearly exclusively male. On some level, this may be expected when the main character is gay (i.e. no females as potential love interests), but I think it felt unnecessary. There were characters whom I enjoyed, but could have easily been instead a female voice to the story. (I’m a gay male btw if that offers context to my perspective.) This obviously didn’t ruin the book for me, but it took me out of the story at times. I want strong gay characters, but the sausage fest was a little overwhelming.
Second, the dialogue had strong moments, but was a lot of times very cringe. I didn’t love the banter between Rune and Brand mostly because I didn’t find it witty, and it just gave second hand embarrassment. I found much of the dialogue trite, and I think the beauty of the writing comes through much better during the moments of observation.
I would recommend this book. If nothing else, it is a great example of things to do right, and a better example of things to avoid.

A fun ride with some flaws and trigger warnings
So, the good first. This book is a real thrill ride, with perilous situations, near-death experiences supernatural threats, and high-octane magical combat going on constantly. The idea of New Atlantis is an interesting one, and allows for some lore that's a little different than a lot of other UF out there. The hero, Rune, is a pretty good protagonist, being fairly likeable and not making idiotic decisions. The supporting cast, including his bodyguard Brand, make for interesting characters as well. The plot is engaging and has a few neat twists.
Now the bad.
For one thing, there's some serious trigger warnings about rape that need to be attached to this book. Rune has a few flashes back to a night he was gang-raped by several men, and there's some rather brutal imagery to go along with it. One remark in particular near the end of the novel turned my stomach.
The other problem I had with it is... Okay. I get that this is an M/M book, and I don't have a problem with that. There's a fair amount of good-looking dudes flirting with each other and hitting on each other and admiring their respective good looks, and there's a minor amount of M/M sexual content. All of that is fine. What I had a problem with is *there are almost no female characters.* I wouldn't expect one to be a love interest in an M/M book, but there should at least be one or two who have a little bit of relevance as, you know, CHARACTERS. There's a grand total of three of them who have any impact on the plot at all; of those three, one dies ten minutes in, one exists solely to give Rune a mission, and one is the girlfriend of a minor character. If this were a movie, they'd get maybe five minutes on screen combined. It's even more jarring considering that early on, Rune explains that bisexual polygamy is the norm for relationships among the Atlanteans, yet all we see are men jealously struggling to be Rune's monogamous boyfriend. None of this would be a problem in a gay literotica, but in a book that has an actual plot and isn't just smut, it's really weird and glaring.
Anyway. I didn't hate it, and I found the constant wizardry battles pretty entertaining. It's worth a read, but just know what you're getting into ahead of time.

Surprisingly different and chalk full of sass!
4.5 stars!
Book Content Warning: talk of past sexual assault.
This was surprisingly different and chalk full of sass! I had a lot of tropes lined up in my head for a story like this, and in steered clear of a lot of them.
The world and plot held my interest the whole time, and there wasn't any unneeded info dumping. I loved the characters and their relationships. They were all sassy, but in different ways.
I was sure this would be an mm romance between the mc and his bodyguard, but it wasn't and their friendship gave me warm and fuzzy feelings. They'll sass each other one minutes and hug the next...while sassing each other, I loved it.
Also, there was a good found family feel to it, with the all the characters which is one of my biggest weaknesses.
I eagerly await the next book.

I don’t know what to do??
This audiobook was so good. The world that was created was spectacular. I’m dying to know what happens next. I usually wait until the next book would be made into an audiobook to enjoy the story but idk I’m seriously considering seeing if the next book is out.
The narration was fabulous. Hurley made the characters come alive.
I will say, it was hard to hear about the sexual assault. That is my only warning to any one thinking of listening to this audiobook.

Holy shit.
I don’t know what I was expecting when I bought this book, but definitely not that. Easily, easily one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. World-building was flawless. Characters were rich and complex and fascinating. The plot was incredibly engaging and the larger arch of the series integrated seamlessly. Josh Hurley’s reading brought the characters to life perfectly. 10/10, get this book.

This was such an amazing surprise!
I encourage everyone to take a chance and read this book! I didnt know what to think at first, since it was a new author, but Im so glad I got to experence this story.
The magic, characters, world, and plot were all great! I was a little confused by some of the magic and world details at first, however that didnt last long and the characters more than carried me through it.
The plot was great, and left me craving the next book. It seems like this is only the beging and I cant wait for more!!

Unfinished
I'm torn on this. The writing and plot I liked but there are so many holes in this story. Perhaps there's a prequel or something that explains how this world came to be that I haven't read that would help with backstory.
My concern doesn't end there though. There's a major conflict throughout the story that doesn't feel resolved and not in the "to be continued" sense. I don't really know why the events occurred and it doesn't feel like the hero has a clue to follow up on.

It’s like the Dresden Files with a gay protagonist
Upfront this is a adventure-mystery in an alternate modern magical Earth. At its heart it is an excellent representation of a gay hero in fantasy fiction driven by realistic needs and the struggle to survive a dangerous, fantastic land.
The world is rich, the characters are developed, the dialog feels authentic, and the plot and intrigue stand well on their own without giving too much away. Readers familiar with role-playing games can enjoy how magic is presented in the story. Overall the author does an excellent job setting the stage for an immersive series with good potential for growth.
If you enjoy the Dresden Files but want more gay characters you should definitely check this one out!

One of the best audio books I’ve listened to.
This is the second time I’ve read this/listened to this and I posted a review on goodreads the first time but for some reason didn’t cross post to here so because i still feel every word of this review as strongly as when I first wrote it, I’m going to leave it here too, edited a little to shorten some of the blabbering from past Lauren.
OKAY SO HERES THE THING. I am so in love with this book I could cry. Right from the start I knew exactly how in love I was going to be, some books are just like that. The fact that I have to wait months for a sequel is ruining my life. I have so many questions! I need answers!
So firstly, one of the best narrations of a fiction book i've ever had the pleasure to listen to. Josh Hurley was a perfect choice, each of his character voices was unique and recognisable and he has such a good grasp of their personalities that it shines through as he speaks them. I would say "my soul for Josh Hurley to narrate any and all sequels of this book!" but lets be honest my soul has already gone on bargaining for time to pass faster so I can read the sequel.
Secondly, the world building of this fantasy universe is one of the most unique i've ever seen in a book. The way the magic system works is intriguing, as is the hierarchical system at play in the background. It feels fully formed and fleshed out and the cast of characters completely enhance this. I loved every single one of them. (Well, the ones we're supposed to love anyway. Ashton can go die in a ditch for the rest of eternity). Addam, Quinn, Max, Queenie, Brand, The Tower, Kieran and, of course, Rune himself. They each have such a distinct personality and presence and they each add something beautiful to the novel, from Addam's enchantingly kind heart and lovable dancing to Brand's own personal brand (ha!) of humour and open devotion to Rune, who himself is a powerhouse of caring and, well, power.
And talking of Rune. I am forever torn between wanting to wrap him in a blanket and feed him animal crackers and standing off to one side holding his coat while he beats up everyone in his path for justice tbh. He can even beat me up if it'll make him feel better. The way his past is slowly revealed through his character arc is so well done and emotional. I NEED him to get justice for himself. I need him to vaporise every single one of the people who hurt him when he was younger. Brand and Addam can help of course.
Which leads me to relationships!
I won't talk about all of them because part of the joy of this book is seeing them unfold for yourself but seriously The Last Sun is a treasure trove of good relationships.
Brand and Rune, for example, have the most pure bond that i've read in recent memory. And I'll be 100% honest with you I really want them to end up romantic. Polyamoury for the win! Addam and Rune, Rune and Brand what could possibly go wrong! Don't get me wrong, It won't be disappointing in the slightest if they stay platonic, Rune himself says several times in the novel that it isn't like that between them (unless this is a case of protesting TOO much lmao) and platonic relationships are just as important as romantic ones so I can definitely see them as platonic best friends who would die for each other because at present that is exactly what they are.
Their love for each other is so well written in The Last Sun that they could do anything for the rest of the series and as long as they do it together i'd be like "Yeah okay!" and 100% happy to read about it haha. As long as they're okay I'M okay.
Overall, in all honesty, I cannot find fault in this book other than now that i've finished it I need the sequel like I need air and since The Hanged Man isn't out for what feels like a lifetime it might end up the death of me haha. I bought The Last Sun as an audiobook because it's easier for me to listen to while I'm at work and these days I only tend to buy the physical copies of book I love because they tend to be more expensive, but i will 100% be getting the physical copy of this, and The Hanged Man, when it comes out. Also I heard that there are going to be 9 books in this series, which, if that's true then I have a new reason to stay alive on top of getting to play The Last of Us 2 and reading The Queen of Nothing lmao. Keep 'em coming K.D. Edwards, keep 'em coming.
(I'm not even joking i dont know what to do with myself now that it's done. I have forgotten how life works. I can't even think about picking up another book when I know it's going to pale in comparison i am the embodiment of the crying emoji).

Fantastic listen in both story and voice.
A fantastic example of a gay fantasy novel which does not completely revolve around the relationship aspect of the story. It builds characters which are not just important or interesting due to their sexual orientation or their relations. This is not to say that there are no meaningful relationships or interactions between characters with Rune, Addam and Brand's relationship not being a conventional rushed sexual relationship. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the Hanged man with bated breath.

Good story that explores some dark themes.
I would hesitate to say this was an enjoyable story. The use of sexual assault as a plot device made me personally uncomfortable. However, The Last Sun was certainly interesting. I think the story starts on shaky ground, with the first half not being all that good but it picks up in the later half.
The narration was good and the characters were intriguing. The relationships between the characters is at the core of the book, and on the whole they are well represented. There aren't any female characters at the forefront of this story, which may bother some people. The writer made the decision to write the book in the first person, but does not reveal too much information at once and has left plenty of mystery for future additions to the series.
I am interested to see how the story develops in the sequel.

refreshing fantasy story.
CW rape.
I really enjoyed this book a lot and the world building particularly. The way Arcana work, the way spells work is really fascinating to me and I want to know more. It is also refreshing not to be drowned in heteronormativity. There are explicit retellings of rape scenes. It triggered PTSD for me. I wish I had known this before to prepare myself better.
however, I really didn't enjoy the performance of the narrator. I often couldn't distinguish between different characters. His narration is constantly over the top. There is no real contrast between narration of the thoughts of the characters and action scenes. He is shouting a lot. I recommend to listen to the extract before.

Refreshing change of pace
I've been looking for a book with a protagonist who's interested in men but where the whole story is not consumed by this. It was such a refreshing change of pace to find this book, where being interested in either gender wasn't even relevant and where the story was first and any romance tertiary.
Loved it.

Unexpectedly excellent
Came across this book by happenstance, having never seen it mentioned under any recommended LGBT* book lists. Some o those lists have included some rather dire numbers in my eyes so I approached this warily. I was delighted in all the best ways. An interesting urban fantasy blend that has me hoping for more and a pleasant range of characters treated with sympathy. If nothing else I fell in love with seeing male characters in a variety of relationships (romantic and non) being allowed to have and express their feelings without shame. The friendship between Rune and his companion was particularly compelling for me and I'd like to see further exploration of how that potential power balance might effect them in the future. I will certainly be revisiting and recommending this one.

Very enjoyable
Story is told at a good pace. There are a lot of names to learn but you will soon pick them up. Great that the story didn't rely on endless sex scenes to fill the pages like many others. The Narrator is a great voice actor, but my one criticism is that although he throws his soul into the parts, he does have the tendency to start shouting, and if like me this is a book at bedtime, be prepared for the volume to go up and down a lot, when he gets into his stride with the action. All in all a very entertaining book and I shall definitely be getting the sequel.

excellent book, excellent narration
The actor narrating this book is absolutely fantastic. I loved the book itself as well but wanted to specifically leave a review here because the audio is one of the best I've ever encountered. My only regret is that the Russian accent is in no way even remotely accurate, but I'm used to that with audiobooks. Other than that, some of the BEST narration I've ever encountered.

What a romp!
Absolutely brilliant! I bought the audio so no preconceived ideas or ‘voices’. Throughly enjoyed everything about this story and performance. I will definitely be buying book two. I am desperate to find out what happens next to our ‘Hero’ and his sidekick! Their interactions and deep love (platonic) make this book! The bond that these two share is incredible and as other characters are introduced, you get a real sense of who they are from their interactions, both lighthearted and sombre, with each other and others. The story is engaging, adventurous and complex ... a real epic in the making! Five stars well deserved!
