Publisher's Summary
New York Times best-selling author Karin Slaughter brings back Will Trent and Sara Linton in this superb and timely thriller full of devious twists, disturbing secrets, and shocking surprises you won't see coming.
A mysterious kidnapping
On a hot summer night, a scientist from the Centers for Disease Control is grabbed by unknown assailants in a shopping center parking lot. Vanished into thin air, the authorities are desperate to save the doctor.
A devastating explosion
One month later, the serenity of a sunny Sunday afternoon is shattered by the boom of a ground-shaking blast - followed by another seconds later. One of Atlanta's busiest and most important neighborhoods - the location of Emory University, two major hospitals, the FBI headquarters, and the CDC - has been bombed.
A diabolical enemy
Medical examiner Sara Linton and her partner, Will Trent, an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, rush to the scene - and into the heart of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to destroy thousands of innocent lives. When the assailants abduct Sara, Will goes undercover to save her and prevent a massacre - putting his own life on the line for the woman and the country he loves.
Critic Reviews
"[Narrator Kathleen Early] masterfully differentiates the main characters and delivers a chilling depiction of the militia leader. A gripping listen." (AudioFile Magazine)

Editor's Pick
An FBI thriller practically ripped from the headlines
"Karin Slaughter slays when it comes to writing suspenseful tales so devastatingly real that Netflix (see: Pieces of Her) and the big screen are on high alert. Her latest detective novel, The Last Widow, proves this Georgia native ain’t slowing down anytime soon. This recommendation (thanks, Editor Tricia!) introduced me to the Will Trent series, which works soundly as a standalone. With a fast-paced plot that dives deep into the topics of (trigger warning) rape trauma, child exploitation, and domestic terrorism—and that references recent world events—you could easily imagine the frightening storyline being more fact than fiction. The characters—each incredibly performed by Kathleen Early—are richly developed, with the leads displaying a satisfying touch of heartache and passion that kept me invested to the end. It’s a wild ride, so buckle in."

Repetitive, slow with unnecessary sexual violence.
I gave up on this one. The story line is repeated multiple times from different perspectives, but without much difference in those perspectives. The characters are stereotypical and there is gratuitous sexual violence.

Audio is subpar
Great story, good characters and only slight predictable. The only thing I will complain about is the audio. It sounded muffled but in an echo chamber...I had to turn my car volume all the way up and the clarity was still left wanting.

Seriously depressing. Makes you think there's a bright light at the end of the tunnel... No so much. Goes into detail about horrible suffering and child sexual abuse. Who writes about that, seriously?! Awful, need to erase from my memory.

SO GOOD but so close to current horrific events
This book is so good down to the last sentence/statement. I started it not long after a mass shooting so I had to wait a bit before I listened again. But then I couldn’t wait any longer —her books are my favorites —and I’m so glad I kept at it. Talk about ripped from the headlines. I kept thinking “amen” to the good characters and their critiques of hatred and how hatred is (or isn’t) covered. I so needed that even though it can be hard to listen to hate speech from bad characters. Despite heaviness, there’s still the humor we adore from Karin Slaughter/her characters. A must-read, just be forewarned re triggers.

Current and all too real...
The Invisible Patriot Army. A new group of home grown militants, domestic terrorists who hate everyone who is not a white Christian. In the wake of Charlottesville and the validation the hate groups received it has become more about the acts then the cause.
Add in a bomb expert and some pedophilia and you have the makings for the group that first kidnapped a scientist from the CDC. About a month later Sara Linton is kidnapped and brought to their grassroots compound for reasons she is yet to learn. For anyone unfamiliar with the Grant county series, Sara’s husband was murdered by a member of an Arian group.
Meanwhile Will Trent is working to get into the IPA undercover.
Faith Mitchell is a key player as she puts the pieces of information together before it’s too late, but information comes slowly.
There are many more characters and plans that piggyback on more secretive plans for what could be a terrifying outcome.
Kathleen Early is the voice for this series. She does an outstanding job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Boring...
If you like multiple detailed descriptions of medical procedures, lots and lots (& lots) of reading of lists (repeated endlessly) and a plot and story that may have been interesting as a very short story but took HOURS then listen on... endless and repetitive. Numerous times I seriously thought I had already heard the chapter.

Bummed!!
Love her books...usually!! I listen and read books to get away from all the political BS, not be inundated by it! All this book is good for is finding out what side of the line the author stands on in regards to political and social matters. I love the series but this one...ugh!! I felt like I was listening to a political rant. It makes me sad that one cannot get away from it all even in a book about murder!!😢

Intense!! Karin Slaughter's best!
Karin Slaughter has been on of my favorite authors for 18 years. Every novel is a must read/listen. THE LAST WIDOW is a very special novel even for a novelist with the talent of Karin Slaughter. The publisher's summary sets up this novel perfectly so I will not risk giving away any more of it. But there are some comments that are appropriate. Although this is the Will Trent series, Dr. Sara Linton is co-protagonist. Will is now divorced from his destructive childhood friend Angie. A wedding to Sara seems to be in the near future. Will's partner Faith Mitchell plays a significant role in this novel as does his boss Amanda. Kathleen Early continues to narrate the Will Trent series as well as most of Ms. Slaughter's other novels. Early is superb!
THE LAST WIDOW can be read as a stand alone novel, but it's even better if the other novels in the series are read first.

Difficult to get through
I found the plot and “bad guys” to be a token portrayal of Right Wingers. Anyone who loves the Bible and the Constitution must be racist, bigots who are anti government, White Supremacist. Let’s throw in some Anti vaccination rhetoric and make them ex military. Come ON! Was this book written by CNN? Not EVERYONE who is Conservative is the enemy and I am so sick of this Anti Right Wing Dog Whistle that is playing out in TV shows, Movies and now this book. I really loved The Kept Woman but this book is just one lecture after another of anti Conservatism. People who are Christian don’t generally hate...People who love the Constitution love Law & Order. And PS...Neo Nazis were a spawn off of the KKK which was 100% LEFT WING!
