Story
In Pamplona, capital of Navarra, Amaia Salazar is called in to investigate the death of a baby girl. The baby has red marks on her face, indicating she has been murdered. According to the girl's grandmother, the father tried to run away with the body, uttering something about an offering. She also mentions the Inguma - an evil being of Basque mythology that kills people in their sleep. The investigation takes Amaia and her team to the nearby valley of Baztan, where there have been an abnormally high number of similar cases - and some procedural irregularities.

Ansel Packer is scheduled to die in 12 hours. He knows what he’s done, and now awaits execution, the same chilling fate he forced on those girls, years ago. But Ansel doesn’t want to die; he wants to be celebrated, understood. Through a kaleidoscope of women - a mother, a sister, a homicide detective - we learn the story of Ansel’s life. Notes on an Execution presents a chilling portrait of womanhood as it simultaneously unravels the familiar narrative of the American serial killer, interrogating our system of justice and our cultural obsession with crime stories.

Publisher's Summary
The second book in Dolores Redondo's atmospheric Baztan trilogy, featuring Inspector Amaia Salazar. With masterful storytelling and a detective to rival Sarah Lund, this Spanish bestselling series has taken Europe by storm.
A year after arresting Jason Medina for the rape and murder of his step-daughter, Detective Inspector Amaia Salazar has one last duty to complete before starting her maternity leave - attending Medina's trial. When the trial is suddenly called off, Amaia is appalled. But the judge had no choice. Jason Medina has committed suicide in the bathroom of the courthouse, leaving behind a cryptic note addressed to Amaia: the single word 'Tarttalo'. What message was Medina trying to send with this obscure reference to Basque mythology? To unravel the truth, Amaia must return once again to the Baztan valley, her family home and the place where she feels most vulnerable. As the investigation becomes more complicated and more personal, those closest to Amaia will be placed in mortal danger....

Mystery, crime, twists, and much more!
This is the second book in the Baztan Trilogy. I first encountered this story on Netflix where I watched the portrayal of the story through film. It intrigued me to understand the intricacies of the story better by listening to the books. I was not disappointed in either and I recommend this brilliant trilogy.
The second book follows the first by untangling the reasons behind the murders in the first and uncovers new elements to the case, linked to the history of the town and all the people in it. It involves cults, murder, betrayal, and much more!

Amazing Sequel
I began listening to the books after watching and enjoying the Netflix trilogy. Being more detailed, the books are incredible! Emma Gregory does a great job of narrating this one but I got used to the narrator of part one and I can’t stand when they change readers in the middle of a series! It’s like when they change actors in a show for the same character! What’s more, Gregory mispronounces several words/names in Spanish/Castilian which were pronounced correctly by the excellent reader of book one. Small gripes but worth mentioning. Can’t wait to listen to the final part!

Better than the first volume
It seems the author took some time to review her first volume and adjusted by adding a bit of reality into her second volume. Still one is left with an impression where occult ends and reality begins. Taro cards, visions and Agent Dupree. Probably Agent Dupree is the occult

One of the best audiobooks I've listened to
As a lover of crime novels I found this quite perfect. An intelligent and engrossing story, beautifully read by Emma Gregory who has impeccable pronunciation of difficult names and places. Her voice is just right for a tale of savagery, soulfulness and, ultimately, family history and the fates thereof.
Let's hope Redondo writes more about Baztan after the trilogy.
