“An addictive, action-packed, scorcher of a read!” ―#1 New York Times bestselling author Alyson Noël

Some shadows protect you…others will kill you in this dazzling new fantasy series from award-winning author Abigail Owen.

Everything about my life is a lie. As a hidden twin princess, born second, I have only one purpose―to sacrifice my life for my sister if death comes for her. I’ve been living under the guise of a poor, obscure girl of no standing, slipping into the palace and into the role of the true princess when danger is present.

Now the queen is dead and the ageless King Eidolon has sent my sister a gift―an eerily familiar gift―and a proposal to wed. I don’t trust him, so I do what I was born to do and secretly take her place on the eve of the coronation. Which is why, when a figure made of shadow kidnaps the new queen, he gets me by mistake.

As I try to escape, all the lies start to unravel. And not just my lies. The Shadowraith who took me has secrets of his own. He struggles to contain the shadows he wields―other faces, identities that threaten my very life.

Winter is at the walls. Darkness is looming. And the only way to save my sister and our dominion is to kill Eidolon…and the Shadowraith who has stolen my heart.

UGH SO GOOD

Oh boy, I was not expecting this to be so damn good! Did I stay up till 3am to finish this? Hell yes I did. Do I regret it? NOPE.

Synopsis
In this world there is a big baddie who is immortal. Every few generations he steals the queen from a neighboring kingdom and has been doing so for centuries, reason unknown. Luckily for the queen there is usually a second child born, a twin. Each child has their unique powers and one is always used as a back up queen in case the big bad decides to abduct/kill or be an all around dickhead. Our heroine in this story is Marin, who is the second born child and thus has been raised with the sole purpose of giving her life up to save her sister so the realm always has a queen. During the coronation Marin is abducted by a man who controls shadows and can kill a man within seconds. Our abductor (Riven) thinks Marin is the queen at the time and steals her away. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned for either of them. Not only does Marin annoy the shit out of him but over time she begins to learn more about him and the secrets he carries that tie him to the big baddie.

This book has some amazing plot twists. I loved Riven's character. He's a morally grey antihero with the biggest heart. His background and struggles throughout this book blew me away. I do wish the book was a dual POV so we could've gotten to hear what he was thinking more - not counting the epilogue. Marin is a spitfire with some crazy cool powers. The magic system in this world is so different from previous Fantasy books I've read. It's unique and intriguing with plenty of room to grow over the new books.

Things to expect!
✅ Found family
✅ Fated mates, or ehm heart mates (kinda-you'll see)
✅ Morally grey MMC
✅ He falls first
✅ Unique world building
✅ Shadow creatures
✅ Tension and banter!

And more...

Disappointed

I really liked the story in the beginning but this book ended up being more about the romance and less about the adventure and actual story. I also felt like the romance happened too quickly. I think it only took them less than a week?

Loved this book more than I thought I would

If you’re thinking about reading this book, just do it.

I listened to a teaser at the end of another audiobook and was like “ehh” but threw it on my wishlist anyway.

I listened to this book in its entirety in one day. It’s not too over the top YA, roll your eyes, type of fantasy.

Despite only having the narrators pov, the world building is done wonderfully. Although the plot may feel recycled in the beginning I think the author did a fantastic job creating her own story.

Negatives:
1. It could have been double the length.
2. Unpopular opinion, but I cannot stand the voice the reader used for Reven.
3. I have to wait a year for the second one ):

A really good book. Narrator is fantastic.

I was hooked into this book because the description sounded interesting. The book does not disappoint.

Maren is strong, smart, capable, and a fighter, but her whole life is spent being a decoy for her twin sister, Tabra. Maren has been taught that her only purpose in life is to sacrifice herself to save Tabra, especiallyif King Eidolon comes for her. Maren doesn't exist, otherwise. As far as the people, and even the leaders of their country and the rest of the Dominions are concerned, there is only one princess: Crown Princess Tabra.

Then there is Reven. He is the Shadowraith everyone fears. But he is so much more. And the voice acting done for him fits so well. He kidnaps Maren when she is standing in for Tabra for the crowning ceremony. Maren is playing her decoy role since King Eidolon is expected to be in attendance. Things go badly, but also right when the "wrong" princess is stolen.

There are mature situations, cursing, and bloody violence in this book. It is all well executed and does not feel crass. The ending, with the epologue, really sets the mood for the next book to come.

Great book. Suitable for mid-teens and older. The story is not juvenile, so adults will enjoy it as well.

A Romantic Fantasy Adventure

This book is a romantic adventure, a fantasy for sure, but driven by the romance as a vital component of the main plot. It's told almost entirely from the MC, Meren's, POV and I never Felt tired of her, or as if a greater scope was lacking.

The audiobook narration by Samara Naeymi is fantastic too! A wonderful addition!

Add to that, Owen's writing is beautiful, well-crafted and engaging. Her characters are
distinct with their own set of needs and drives. I particularly loved the fairy-tale element of
the sentient shadow, (you'll see), a topic of great interest to me.

If you want the romance in your Fantasy books to read more explicit/up front with a PNR
feel (think NA more than YA), then The Liar's Crown is for you.

A page-turner, and a delight!

Intoxicatingly addictive

I bought this on a whim but quickly became addicted to Maren’s world and her handsome shadow rathe. I am very excited for the next book and and bummed to most likely wait for another year before it comes out. Highly recommend if you enjoy magical love stories.

Loved it! Great narration!

Meren is the second born princess and as such she must protect her sister at all costs.
When Meren is suddenly kidnapped she finds herself outside the kingdom with Reven, her kidnapper.
I absolutely love Meren. I felt like she was a great character and was easy to connect with. She is sassy, and I loved how she is able to fight and protect herself when the time came. Shes not a damsel in distress. She took her role serious in protecting her sister. Reven is a quiet, yet mysterious individual. I came to like him very much. I especially loved the banter between the two! The way their relationship progressed throughout the book felt real.
The magic terms took me a bit to get used to but it’s very easy to understand.
I struggled at the beginning of the book, but once I understood a bit of the magic and the way Meren and Tabra relationship I was hooked! The world building is so good! I loved getting lost in this world.

I listened to the book while I commuted and I must add that I really enjoyed the audiobook. The narrators, Luis Moreno, and Samara Naeymi performance was fantastic. I really enjoyed the story a lot when they read the book. The narration is very engaging!
I can’t wait to see what happens next!
I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA high fantasy, morally gray characters, magical system, and betrayal.
