Publisher's Summary

It is 1842 and Maria Merryweather, a 13-year-old orphan is on her journey to the mysterious Moonacre Manor. There she finds herself in a crumbling house of secrets and mystery in a world caught up in time.

Maria discovers that she is the last Moon Princess and she has only until the next full moon to undo the misdeeds of her ancestors and save the Moonacre estate from disappearing forever. Although she is aided by a stable of wonderful characters and magical beasts, it is only by self-sacrifice and perseverance that she will be able to succeed. And of course, with a good pinch of magic, Maria is able to save Moonacre, right the wrongs, reunite lost loves and finally bring peace to the valley.

Read by Juliet Stevenson who plays Miss Heliotrope in the 2008 movie based on the book The Secret of Moonacre.

Abridged too far

What a pity that this book is short on content and form. I remember it being read to me, when I was 10, and it literally enchanted me! Every word had meaning and painted a portrait of the persons, their adventures, their surroundings. You could almost see the book. This quality is totally gone, so has the magic. The storyline is followed drudgingly and grudgungly, with omission of all personal talking to,other persons and sometimes themselves. Never boring. It gave cachet, brilliance and humour to the tale told.
Indeed a grave mistake. A great pity also of Stevenson's very suitable soft voice. Two birds with clipped wings, the book and the narrator.

Thank you for this!

Thank you so much for having this audiobook in! I have always loved the Little White Horse, and I'm so happy it's available for the blind. The abridgement worked very well.

Lovely reading of wonderful book

This was the perfect comfort listen - but left me longing for an unabridged recording by the peerless Juliet Stevenson. Why not record the full book? There are so many favourite bits missing from this version.

Should be unabreridged

Most disappointing. Much of the beauty of this book has been cut out only leaving the bare story I would rather wait to give a child the complete book

Elizabeth Goudge

Such a lovely book. Could we have more by this author? Some of her adult books.

The Little White Horse

I love it, but I wish it had included Maria and Robin's quarrel like the non-edited version

As good as I remembered.

From the day my teacher read this book to me it has stayed in my mind. He read it with so much passion and admitted it was one of his favourites. He said just because we become adults there is no reason to not read it then. He was right and I enjoyed it all over again. A kid again.... yes, so what!!!

A childhood favourite

Juliet Stevenson reads this so well: she creates a unique voice for each character. So special is her adaptation, that I had misremembered it as being dramatised! But the story is a childhood classic, full of magic and wonder! Enjoy!

utterly charming

This is the definition of a cosy read! Although there is adventure and peril a lot of the emphasis is on the home comforts such as log fires, mountains of food and good company. Perfect for a rainy day!

Loved loved the book, very disappointed by the audiobook

This story is so magical… I think I’ve read it so differently to the reader it has lost its magic for me… I don’t think she is bad… just different

A little disappointing

I love and have my own hard copy of this book and was looking forward to hearing this. Imagine my disappointment when I found it was the abridged version. While I don't dismiss the talent of the narrator I wasn't aware that the version I was purchasing was abridged. A lot of the magic and wonder of the original was lost.

excellent adaptation of a childhood favourite

I can only wish that this wasn't a full version of the book! Juliet Stevenson spoke brilliantly and with emotions to match what was happening.
