Publisher's Summary

They grew up with nothing. Just a regular family scraping by, living an honest life while crime ruled the East End. Until all that honesty and all that hard work left them with nothing.

Poor, destitute and hungry, young Ruby decides to pull them from the ashes. It starts as one job, one step outside the law. Yet that one step sets her on a path - straight to the top.

But in the East End you don't build an empire without making a few enemies....

Welcome to the underbelly of London, where criminals run the streets and one woman will do anything to protect her family.

Don’t bother

Waste of time.
If you’re looking for insight into how someone from an upstanding honest family becomes a ‘crime boss’ don’t bother with this.
I had no empathy with any of the characters in this story, was bored to death with the list of expensive items they accumulated along the way and found the lead character’s supposedly amazing negotiation skills fell flat. I lost count of how many times she looked in the mirror and saw someone different too.
I rarely write reviews as I’m generally content with my purchases but when this one eventually ‘ended’ I felt compelled to counter some of the effusive reviews that encouraged me to waste my money.

Hmmm…..really not sure about this author and subject

I found it incredibly hard to empathise with a family of villains who make decent peoples lives a misery to fulfil their own greed. It may have been different had the ‘life of crime” been a means to an end, but it became the raison d’etre, with no morals, conscience or guilt for any of the crimes and atrocities committed. The shift to hard drug dealing, and the wholesale misery that spreads was the last straw, i know its ‘just a novel’ but the whole premise left a very nasty taste. i won’t be reading any more from this author.

Loved it

I thoroughly enjoyed the story itself but love the fact that it was narrated by the author with a genuine accent. Can't wait to listen to the next one.

Absolute drivel

I’m not sure where to start, but given the numerous stellar reviews I was expecting considerably more than a cross between a low-rent version of Eastenders and a fairytale, which could have been written by a daft 12 y/o girl. Cliches abound, with pointless references to designer stuff and significant changes in direction introduced at the drop of a hat. Avoid.

Addictive

I loved this book, found it hard to turn off. I would recommend this book, same intensity as Martina Cole, gripping from start to finish.

Some legal advice.

Poor Bobby should have got a better solicitor. He got sentenced to 15 years for robbery when the offence he pleaded guilty to was obviously burglary. To make matters worse the judge gave him the maximum sentence after taking nothing more than rumours about past offences into account. Grounds for appeal im sure. Can't believe the author didn't spot this..
