Publisher's Summary

When Fiona Edwards first sees the lanky backpacker striding up the lane toward her award-winning farmhouse bed-and-breakfast in the remote mountains of North Wales, she's puzzled. She's used to unexpected strangers, but few arrive on foot. The man to whom she opens her door is middle-aged, unshaven, sweat-soaked…and arrestingly handsome. What neither of them knows at that moment is that their lives are about to change forever.

American Alec Hudson has carried the ashes - and the memory - of his late ex-wife, Gwynne, all the way from London's Heathrow Airport, honoring her request that he scatter them atop a mountain they had climbed together years before, the same brooding peak whose jagged cliffs rise to the sky from the back pastures of Fiona's farm. But the weather doesn't cooperate, and as Fiona and Alec wait for it to clear, they are drawn together by mutual loss, longing, and the miracle of love at midlife.

On the day he finally reaches the summit, Alec is caught in a vicious hailstorm. As he struggles to descend, he stumbles upon the body of a man he recognizes from a photograph at the farm: It is Fiona's ailing and reclusive husband, David, and he is close to death.

Will North's debut novel is a story about grief and hope, about love and loss, and about two people struggling with the agonizing complexities of fidelity - to a spouse, to a moral code, to each other, and to a passion neither thought would ever appear again. By turns lyrical and gripping, set amid a landscape of breathtaking beauty and unpredictable danger, this is a story you will not soon forget.

Close to perfect

I have no recollection of what led me to this book, but I am SO glad that I found it. The story was simply wonderful: two mature, honorable adults, who find love at the most unexpected moment. Fiona and Alec are both the kind of people one feels close to; if they were neighbors or co-workers, they'd be the ones you wanted to invite home for dinner and stay friends with for life, and their strengths and challenges make perfect sense. Their story aside, the descriptions of the Welsh terrain, with its vivid beauty and and untamed wildness, and even the beautiful descriptions of the most down-and-dirty bits of sheep farming, made me wish the story would never end. An absolute jewel of a book.

An Affair

The author justied an affair of the main characters. Shame on him! An affair is never right.
He also wasted lots of time on the intricate details of everything. I could care less the color neighbor's house or how many leaves are on a tree. Don't waste your time on this book.

Interesting, but...

This was the first book by Will North I had purchased. I wasn't sure what to expect. I had listened to other books read by Kate Reading, and had always enjoyed her narrations. There were a number of things about the story I did enjoy. The descriptions of the Welsh countryside, the little pointers about hill hiking and lamb birthing. I also enjoyed the bits of cooking instructions! What I did not like were the times the story veered into a stereotypical romance novel. Characters were a bit too perfect and predictable and the direction of the story was easy to see well before the end.

Kate Reading did not disappoint and did a great job on the narration.

Would have given it five stars

The sexual descriptions were completely unnecessary and they tainted the sweetness of this lovely story

Well, I did finish it

The story reads like a hallmark movie - with raunchy adultery added. I rather reluctantly kept listening, even through the horrible narration and my own eye rolling.

The narrator had a very weird way of pronouncing the daughter’s name. Since it’s my own daughter’s name, I found it extremely annoying. Perhaps it’s the Irish Celtic way of pronouncing it. I don’t know. But it grated on me. You won’t like it either. Guarantee it.

Falling in love, deep love, after knowing someone for 3 days, is ridiculous enough, but the fact this guy (Alec) keeps sleeping with Fiona after her husband’s near death - well that’s just insane.

And what’s even more insane? At the end of the book, Alec comes back after 6 years apart, and immediately proposes to Fiona - with his dead wife’s wedding ring! I realize that a man wrote this book, because no woman on earth would write that into a story. I’d prefer a new ring, thank you very much. Not his dead first wife’s!

I keep thinking about the hours of my life that I’ve lost listening to this book. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your hours too. You’re welcome.

A lovely book

Filled with decent people doing their best at life, this book is a delight to read. The descriptions of the setting in Wales, the drawing of good believable people coping with the challenges and pain of living their lives, and a man who cooks! It’s an utterly charming book.

Narration

The narrative on this book was so bad and the voice drawn out in an attempt to give effects that 10 min in returned the book. Can’t say if the story is good or not.

Great story

A lovely story which had wonderful graphic descriptions of the countryside, farming, Wakes and personal relationships. I really enjoyed the pace and retelling of this story. It’s so much better having the correct pronunciation of all those welsh names rather than best guessing them yourself.
