Publisher's Summary

Ever since the accident that cost him his job on the Seattle police force, Kevin Quinn has been living with psychic abilities he refers to as the 'gift that keeps on taking'. His attempts to use his talents to help the police have been met with limited success. Yet, when teenage boys start going missing from the beach cities of Southern California, Kevin gets on a plane.

Connor Dougal has every reason to believe all psychics are fakes and charlatans. He's still numb from the disappearance of his first love, a boy who went missing 10 years earlier. Everything he aspires to is a direct result of that tragedy, even the acquisition of his detective shield. The irony of having to babysit Kevin Quinn is not lost on him.

These two suspicious men must develop trust and respect for one another to solve the case and, on the way, maybe fall in love.

Compelling Mystery and Romance

Any additional comments?

Kevin Quinn has psychic abilities he developed after a car accident that nearly took his life. He doesn't have any control over them, and has met with limited success when trying to use them to help different police agencies. However, when his brother-in-law calls the week before Christmas, Kevin is convinced to go home to Southern California to try to find the missing boys and/or their abductor/killer.

Connor Dougal is the new detective assigned to shadow Kevin. But Connor has his own demons that he wrestles with nightly, including the fact that he's really gay.

The romance between Kevin and Connor is one of immediately hitting it off and falling for each other - in other words: "insta-love".

I loved that Connor, seeing what Kevin goes through, is determined to help him any way he can, even if that means stepping in front of him and shielding him.

The mystery is super slow moving, and sometimes got caught up with an enormous cast of characters, which got a bit confusing at time while listening to the story.

I was a bit disappointed in the glacial pacing of the mystery, and felt like Keith and Connor's romantic relationship moved at a bit too fast a pace. I wish there has been a middle ground for both, though, both were quite captivating and in the end are solved quite satisfactorily.

J.F. Harding does a great job overall. Harding's tendency to sound like a crime show voice over narrator really works for this story, drawing the listener in and keeping their focus. I really liked his character voices, and he definitely had a lot to keep track of with this huge cast.

It was an easy listen, with good pacing, and a compelling romance and mystery.

Love Conner and Kevin!

I read so much I'd forgotten I'd read this on my kindle, but the opening was so familiar. It was great in audio form too. I sure wouldn't mind this book becoming a series with Conner and Kevin solving cases together.

Good short story

I’m used to reading trilogies so I expected a bigger world and more depth of the world or situation but I realized that this is a standalone single book.
The book is sexy, a bit funny, and beautiful, this book left me happy and have a “feel good” feeling that made me appreciate my relationship.

Just awesome!

Would you listen to The Long Way Home again? Why?

I would listen to this again, just for the dialogue and amazing chemistry. I don't really go for crime books or suspense novels, what got me was the dynamic between the main characters. What started as a slow burning candle, became an inferno. These guys made the most of their time for sure.

Have you listened to any of J.F. Harding’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first JF Harding listen, and it's fantastic!

Any additional comments?

At this point, ZA Maxfield owns a piece of my soul. Please apply your mojo to fantasy so I can switch genres?

Good

Well I have to admit I was a little disappointed the mystery crime part of the story took a backseat to the erotica romance of the story. But overall, the great writing, interesting characters, and the entertaining value of the story kept me listening.

One of my favorite narrators

I have listened to this book numerous times, due to it being just that good, and because of the great narration. The deadpan snark between Kevin and Connor is one of my favorite things about the book. The mystery is well done and ending of the villain swift and deserving (though not drawn out and painful enough for me). The best part is the last scene when Connor finds out who his new favorite author really is lol.

The WORST {{SPOILERS}}

narrator was good the story was not only bad but insanely OFFENSIVE, for one the story was about Connor the other cop, not kevin, and for two Connor treated Kevin like a Piece of crap until all for a sudden he wanted him in bed than nothing that happened before was important, but THE ABSOLUTE worst.....and why I didn't even finish the book and got a refund was Kevins father telling him he was an abomination and because he was gay his mom was dead...…...and they basically treated it like hed called him a name, and all was forgotten kevins father stated "I didn't mean it you little maggot" and kevin fell crying into his arms...…….im gay I came out when I was 18 and let me tell you there are things you DO NOT treat as frivolous....and there are things that all the im sorrys in the world will not make better, there are words that you cant take back or forgive.....this makes a mockery of all the kids kicked out of there house because they were gay, you dont' tell your son hes an abomination and hes the reason for his mothers death...AT her funeral, and expect ANY forgiveness. This is the problem with having female authors do gay novels they don't get the crap we've gone through or the severity of the things done against us, female authors tend to write the gay guy just like they'ed write a female, and just change some words hoping no one will notice, well we notice we ALLWAYS notice, what a crap story.

Horrible and slow

This is a slow slow slow mystery backed by the most improbable love story ever. Boring and unrealistic. I regret I spent money on it.

A gay love/sex story not a thriiler

3 hours in and nothing really happened...fast fwd....no improvement. I got this hoping for a thriller, not what I got. Theres too many books with too much unbelievable love/sex scenes, straight and gay... all as cringeworthy as this book is. This didn't help the flimsy storyline either, which was equally as silly.

Very good mystery with a dash of psychical ability

Read this in pixels first and after hearing the sample decided to give the audio version a go and I'm glad I did as this is another book I thoroughly enjoyed in audio format. The story is paced well; the unfolding relationship between the two leads blending well with the investigation they're engaged in so that there's a nice balance throughout the book.
The initial suspicion held by Connor for Kevin's ability gradually giving way to belief was well represented as was the hostility of some of the other characters for a psychic helping in an investigation.
The narration was very good, with the characters being pretty well defined and I'll definitely listen to more books narrated by Harding.
I will be listening to this again; it's going on the 'keeper' list.

Good story, too much sex

Absolutely loved the story, the characters were well fleshed out and believable but unfortunately that was mired by an over abundance of sex in nearly every chapter. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy reading about it like everyone else but I felt that this book could have done with limiting how much there was as the story was absolutely incredible and kept me hooked until the end.

Good story ruined by overstated sex scenes

There are only so many ways to describe a sex scene. There were so many in this book that they became so repetitive I ended up fast forwarding them all, with an exasperated sigh in an attempt to get back to the story line. This would have been okay with a love story and a touch of steamy sex, but the clatter took over about half way through. I'm now so bored with it I'm not sure I'm bothered to finish the book. Good job it was free.

Psychic or romance?

Not quite sure what to make of this story after reading up on the title it sounded ok until I got further into it the sex scenes were quite graphic and as I listened to me it was more about romance which isn't really my thing but I'm sure some people will like it just not for me.

Too much

The premise of the story was great. Loved the idea of a psychic, but the sex scenes were too much. Overtook the story. Found myself saying, oh not again. Shame really.

Wasted Opportunity!

The premise of the story was really exciting, but it was completely wasted ! Literally the whole book is like a homosexual porn movie!
I don't mind if there is a bit of sex in a book, to fix characters and meaning in the story. . . . .but this book just became almost entirely about the graphic and intimate details of gay sex!
The story became moot, meaningless and entirely a vehicle for the author to show how much he knew about gay sex. The story of missing children and what happened to them was completely lost. What a complete waste of a potentially good story, and a complete waste of my time!! . . . . .

Stunning

Not what I was expecting, it just got better and better, up to the last words. All at the same time, it's a tender love story and a damn fine mystery. Humour dotted throughout, and some gorgeous times for tears.

Highs and lows: Some good, some bad

Mild spoilers

Narration: do yourself a favour and listen to it at 0.9xspeed. It’s far too quick to process what’s going on.

Story: it gets straight into things, which I love. Unique and interesting story, with a good main character. It goes from g-rated for the first half, to just constant sex scenes later - a little too much.

The main relationship that emerges is 75% romantic, sweet, and lustful, but the remaining 25% is just toxic and has various shades of physical and psychological abuse that are either glorified or left completely undiscussed. Moderate amount of sexism and heteronormative gender roles somehow overlain onto a same sex relationship with two males.

I would listen to a sequel because of one of the main characters, but wouldn’t be upset if the other one was written out.

eh.

i enjoyed the story and narration, but the rampant homophobia and gaslighting of Kevin by his family after being blamed for his mother's death and called an "abomination" for being gay pissed me off. it all gets shrugged off and forgiven by kevin after his dad blames the "abomination" comment on having attended the scene of a hate crime the week before kevin' mother died, and then his father, sister and brother in law all mock kevin for "taking (his father)'s comments seriously". it bothers me to the point i'd have returned the audiobook if it hadn't been free.

A relationship with a well written plot to keep you interested and moved with emotion, I laughed (a lot) I cried and felt the emotional pull of the characters. It was a wonderful read, one I will listen to again.

My heart!

What a rollercoaster! I totally called who the bad guy was, but that was okay. Kevin and Conner were hilarious together, but also sweet. The tragedy was heartbreaking. A super enjoyable read. And the performance was great! I loved how hot-tempered Conner was, and how he hated to be called pretty baby but Kevin did it anyway to annoy him. And the "here Kitty Kitty" made me laugh so much my stomach hurt. The strength of the two men and how they 0layed off each other was superb.
