Story
Things may be tranquil at the lake house, but a storm is on the horizon. Bradley and Anna have their work cut out for them; winter is upon them, and they need to be smart if they’re to survive the winter in this dangerous new world, bereft of technology. They work their bodies to the bone to stock up for the winter, and in the process find a little girl, having run away from her family in hiding. Soon, however, it becomes clear that her "family" is anything but conventional and they begin to realize they’ve made some powerful and unhinged enemies.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Publisher's Summary
With humanity on the brink of extinction, they activated the EMP. Now, the world enters darkness.
It started with bright lights; a new medical technology, promising to eradicate all human ills. History of blood clots? Cholesterol clogging up the old ticker? There was a nanobot for that. It wasn’t cheap of course, and everyone knew that new technology had bugs in it. But hey, why not let the rich be the guinea pigs for once?
Fast-forward a year, and the one percent began dying en masse. The nanobots had evolved to view aging as a virus and were reacting by shutting down the host. Swathes of the population were infected before the government rolled out a treatment program in the midst of riots and mass unrest.
Meanwhile, the nanomachines spread like wildfire, infecting and killing millions. The remains of the government had no choice but to detonate a series of experimental weapons in the atmosphere, producing an EMP effect that rendered almost all electronic devices on earth useless.
Bradley is one of the survivors. A former veterinarian, he decides to escape his burning city and trek deep into the Maine wilderness, aiming to find his estranged father’s old lake house. Remembering lessons learned and long-forgotten, Bradley endeavors to survive on his own terms and be self-sufficient in a new and altogether darker world.
But his struggle has only just begun.

Short And To The Point
So, I don’t get to say this often. And I definitely don’t get to say it in books under 200 pages but the science and the description of the disease/issue was spot on and well thought out. Fawkes was able to, in only a few pages, describe what happened before, during, and after the introduction of the main downfall of our society. It wasn’t overly detailed and there weren’t a hundred pages of life before or life during. Fawkes basically says “this is what happened, there were some of the issues it caused, and this is society since then” and does it gracefully and enough that I was satisfied.
Most of the story after that introduction follows one man’s attempts at trying to survive. He starts in a survivor camp but quickly realizes that they’ve basically been left for dead and decides to bug out (obviously very very late) to his dad’s camp. Ironically his dad was one of those “crazy prepper types who thought the world was going to end”. Of course, there are some scenes where Bradley jokes/talks about how he’s still shocked how his dad was right.
We have the typical bad apples along the way who want to take Bradley’s food and leave him for dead. We also run into (what I would call) the typical female counterpart for our young and very nice Bradley. What I didn’t expect were some of the scenes after that. I won’t ruin the surprise, but know that Fawkes doesn’t follow the typical Post-Apocalyptic “meet and we’re instantly in love” or any other trope that you’re used to. There were numerous scenes (including her and others I won’t mention) that genuinely shocked and surprised me. That doesn’t happen too often in Post-Apocalyptic books anymore.
Overall, The Longest Night was a good start to the story. I don’t say this often, but probably could have been combined with book two to make a slightly normal sized novel – but I’m glad that I got to enjoy this bite-sized PA book quickly.
I believe that I saw that ABW signed on to do more books in this series and I’m glad. He was able to portray Bradley perfectly. It was one of those perfect voices for the character books.

How to Survive
I read a lot of post apocalyptic books and decided to give this one a try. I enjoyed the description of the nanobots and the beginning of the SHTF scenario. The idea behind the nanobots was very unique, in my opinion.
That being said, the main character, Brad, is painfully naive for someone who had been raised by a survivalist. He makes many, many dumb mistakes and I found myself doing the big eye roll more than once. He leaves the supposed safety of an apartment that he has been forced to share with a bunch of other people and heads out to the wilds of Maine where his father has a cabin. My first thought was, why did he wait so long when he knew what his Father had set up? If I knew of a place like that, I would head there at the first sign of trouble!
Once he reaches the cabin, he meets a woman and her young son who have set up housekeeping. Anna also has to be pretty unaware of how things are now that the world has changed so drastically. Let's just say that these two deserve each other.
The book had the obligatory bad guys and nasty military types, with a little violence thrown in. The descriptions of the survival tips/skills was probably the most interesting part of the book.
Not a bad book, but there are so many books in this genre that I don't think I will be continuing this series.
The narrator, Andrew Wehrlen, does a good job, but his performance seemed a little rushed at times. I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook version of this book by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.

interesting technological take on the Apocalypse.
I would love to hear this one read by Scott Brick, for comparison. The narration felt as if it had been digitally sped up after the recording at times, it's hard to explain, but I had to look and see if I was playing the book at faster than 1X speed.
The book at least offered a fresh technological take on the dangers that could await us in the future.

post apocalypse stor
The Longest Night, Enter Darkness, Book 1, By: K. M. Fawkes is a post apocalypse story.
A short story about struggle of survival. It has good characters and a good story line.
The story doesn’t end in a cliffhanger but you can see where it could go on. As the apocalypse starts up.
There is very little corse Language in it, I can only remember one or two words. But there could have been more. There are no sex scenes, but there is a hint of rape in the story. But it is only an indication of it. Although there is some violence it does not go into a lot of details. A man does get shot in the head.
Narrator Andrew B. Wehrlen brings each character alive with their own individual voices. A job well done.

Provides a good look at humanity.
This is a wonderful start to a new series. The story drew me in is filled with danger, hope and surprise. The characters are wonderful. I fully believed and hoped that things would work out okay for them. I was surprised a couple times at Bradley. First he only wants to be alone. Then when he receives company he keeps looking for the good in people. He really has a good heart.
This is my first book by this author and in this series. I enjoyed listening to Andrew B Wehrlen tell this story. He did a wonderful job portraying all the voices that Bradley ran across.

If things go wrong.
2025, and an American biomedical facility had achieved the dream: a simple, if expensive, treatment that not only cures everything from cancer to the common cold but also reverses aging. At first, only the very wealthy could afford it but prices were beginning to come down when disaster struck. Turning on their hosts the nanotechnology created a new killer virus that wiped out 90% of the population. In a desperate attempt to halt the death toll, several EMPs were released, Marshall law was imposed and virus free survivors were evacuated to save houses. Several seeks later, they were running out of food and veterinarian, Brad, leaves the shelter of the apartment block assigned to him and 49 other people to try to find much needed supplies.
The Longest Night is, obviously, a book of attempted survival in a changed world. No zombies, just other people are the unknown danger. The setting is atmospheric, Brad's fear palpable. He is no alpha male able and willing to take on the world, just the opposite, in fact. He abhors violence, tries to steer clear of any trouble: he is just an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation forced to go against what he believes is right to survive. Although not written in the first pefson, the majority of the book is seen from Brad's perspective and narrator, Andrew Wehrlen, further enhances the character development with his fine performance, Brad's fear and discomfort showing through the fast delivery.
My thanks to the rights holder who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy of the book, via Audiobook Boom. Different from many of the usual apocalyptic stories, The Longest Night is both thought provoking and frightening, a worthy first episode of what promises to be an excellent series and I'm looking forward to book two.

Great story, well worth a listen
I have read a number of these apocalypse stories and this is one of the best. The story is believable and very entertaining and it leads in to the series very nicely.
I have listened to books performed by this narrator before and that was some of the reason for choosing this as he is very easy to listen to.

Surprisingly Good
As a bit of a take it or leave it with Post Apocalyptic stories i wasn't too sure about this one but decided to give it a go.
And it was surprisingly good , the backstory about a self immolation event to stop a rampage of Nano killing the nation was surprisingly well thought out and executed.
Our main character Brad is fleshed out nicely with a convincing backstory and skill set with some great self doubt moments giving some appealing tension and thrills as he tries to survive in this new world.
Narration is the usual good work from ABW but i will be keeping an eye out for more audios on this series and perhaps even the books as well after this foray.
I requested this audio and have left my thoughts on this for you to peruse.
