Pulitzer Prize, General nonfiction, 2016. When Jordan granted amnesty to a group of political prisoners in 1999, it little realized that among them was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a terrorist mastermind and soon the architect of an Islamist movement bent on dominating the Middle East. In Black Flags, an unprecedented account of the rise of ISIS, Joby Warrick shows how the zeal of this one man and the strategic mistakes of Presidents Bush and Obama led to the banner of ISIS being raised over huge swaths of Syria and Iraq.

April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

In December 1972, Jean McConville, a 38-year-old mother of 10, was dragged from her Belfast home by masked intruders, her children clinging to her legs. They never saw her again. Her abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the IRA was responsible. Patrick Radden Keefe's mesmerizing audiobook on the bitter conflict in Northern Ireland and its aftermath uses the McConville case as a starting point for the tale of a society wracked by a violent guerrilla war.

Publisher's Summary
A sweeping narrative history of the events leading to 9/11, a groundbreaking look at the people and ideas, the terrorist plans and the Western intelligence failures that culminated in the assault on America. Lawrence Wright's remarkable book is based on five years of research and hundreds of interviews that he conducted in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sudan, England, France, Germany, Spain, and the United States.
The Looming Tower achieves an unprecedented level of intimacy and insight by telling the story through the interweaving lives of four men: the two leaders of al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri; the FBI's counterterrorism chief, John O'Neill; and the former head of Saudi intelligence, Prince Turki al-Faisal.
As these lives unfold, we see revealed:
- The crosscurrents of modern Islam that helped to radicalize Zawahiri and bin Laden
- The birth of al-Qaeda and its unsteady development into an organization capable of the American embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania and the attack on the USS Cole
- O'Neill's heroic efforts to track al-Qaeda before 9/11, and his tragic death in the World Trade towers
- Prince Turki's transformation from bin Laden's ally to his enemy
- The failures of the FBI, CIA, and NSA to share intelligence that might have prevented the 9/11 attacks
The Looming Tower broadens and deepens our knowledge of these signal events by taking us behind the scenes. Here is Sayyid Qutb, founder of the modern Islamist movement, lonely and despairing as he meets Western culture up close in 1940s America; the privileged childhoods of bin Laden and Zawahiri; family life in the al-Qaeda compounds of Sudan and Afghanistan; O'Neill's high-wire act in balancing his all-consuming career with his equally entangling personal life - he was living with three women, each of them unaware of the others' existence - and the nitty-gritty of turf battles among US intelligence agencies.
Brilliantly conceived and written, The Looming Tower draws all elements of the story into a galvanizing narrative that adds immeasurably to our understanding of how we arrived at September 11, 2001. The richness of its new information, and the depth of its perceptions, can help us deal more wisely and effectively with the continuing terrorist threat.

The Looming Tower
A very detailed writing of the murders and people in our government who allowed 9/11 to happen.
CIA and FBI could not cooperate and help each other eve though they both had valid, pertinent information.
Mr Wright writes and speaks so well of the time before 9/11.

Unparalleled account of Al-Qaeda
This is the first book I have read on the subject of Al-Qaeda and I thought it was a masterful narrative into the history, progression, and actions of Al-Qaeda.
Wright details the foundations of Al-Qaeda, and Islamic fundamentalism and weaves it with their principles, beliefs, as well as the simultaneous American intelligence investigation. This was an unbiased, thorough, and candid piece about every detail that produced the men responsible on September 11th.
I loved this book, and strongly recommended it for anyone who looks for edification on the subject of Al-Qaeda.

Great story, but should've found a narrator
Exactly as the headline reads: this is a fantastic story with so much incredible backstory. It was very impressive how in-depth this story was. The only fault was that the author narrated it. Although it wasn't a horrible narration, getting a reader who is a professional might have been a good idea.

Do not give up on this Audiobook just because it starts slowly. It is a remarkable work by Lawrence Wright and he does an admirable job narrating it as well given his lack of experience. The failures to communicate by the CIA and FBI are atrocious but Wright does a terrific job explaining this in terms any reader or listener can understand.

Very detailed and thorough, but...
The book dips into every nook and cranny of the subject. Too many names of peripheral characters that unless the reader is 100% invested in the subject play no direct roles in the attacks on the US embassies, the USS Cole, and the 9/11 highjacking.
Of course little is made in the US about its role in financially supporting the Taliban, the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, Saudis. Only to have it blow up on its face, just like Saddam H. did.
We were led to believe that these people were savages who kill others for the sake of it and not for what the US role has been by setting up shop in muslim countries against the will of their citizens.

Brilliant narrative on this historic period of our lives
A brilliant audiobook that has gone such a long way to deepening my understanding of the complexities of AQ.
To the many AQ are a bunch of extremists with little to live for and are hell bent on the defeating the infidel. This book takes the listener through the earliest incarnation of a man who may have taken a different path if not for the steering of others - money was evidently never an issue, OBL was happy to give it away or waste it even but with it brought spinsters who wanted whatever they could get hold off, even if it was simply bikes.
The signs and intelligence failures of the West have been portrayed so glaringly in this book, I feel lost at the simple complacency and bureaucracy of government, who’s single most important objective is to protect its people, not to protect the egos of the few who are charged with this responsibility.
Listen and enjoy.

Disturbing and amazingly insightful
The author sometimes goes into excruciating detail in an effort to bring these events to life. Sometimes this can be horrifying and other times it can be very protracted and mundane. But this detail serves to demonstrate how attentive and studious the author really is in their work.
The frustration felt by those involved in the investigations is conveyed so well that I sometimes found myself having to stop the book because I was so on dumbfounded by the degree to which so much pain and destruction could have been averted had there been fewer pissing contests between the fbi and cia.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a historical or more personal depiction of the events that culminated in the worst day in US history.

Overly Explanatory of Bin Laden
I enjoyed this book, but I felt that the author was at pains to offer "explanations" for the murderous terrorism of the followers of Bin Laden. The author also seemed eager to identify the failings of the US forces fighting terrorism, in particular the lack of transparency between the NSA, CIA, and the FBI. Was there some tinge of the self hating left / liberal here, desperately seeking out the role the USA played in 'causing' this hideous murderous assault to occur? It was not a prominent element in a well written and thoroughly researched account, but this "sophisticated", rather cerebral, analysis, perhaps unconsciously shifts the culpability from a murderous ideology enacted in blood by a leadership of murderous ideologues towards the society which was the victim of their hate. The treatment of 'Qatub' (?) as though he was some kind of philosopher or serious thinker is patently absurd, the description of his time in the USA is enough to identify him for most readers as to what he was an obsessive ideologue driven primarily by a very warped and disturbing attitude towards women. Frankly much too much is made of these killers and their 'rationale', sadly left/ liberals tend to do this, which sadly results in rather a downplaying, whether consciously or not, of the pure evil of those responsible for this atrocity.

He has blood on his hands, if his pathetic jealousy of John O'Neill hadn't so consumed him, he would have shared the intelligence with the FBI that could have led to 9/11 being scuppered. All terribly sad.

A Non Stop Page Turner!
Definitely a non stop page turner ! ! A haunting and some times disturbing insight into a part of history! Although for some it may be a long Journey through the immense dialogue but it is worth it ! Thanks so much to Lawrence for his amazing effort of research for this book.

Gripping and enlightening with brilliant narration
What a privilege to read the insight into the lead up to 9/11 and the lives of the individuals with such obviously well researched information. Troubling in parts and an emotional story, I cannot fault the author/narrator in his diversification of characters.

Tour de force journey to 9/11
This book/audiobook is a masterpiece. Beginning in the 60s and finishing on that fateful day of 9/11. It brings together the main players from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Afghanistan vs stateside security service’s FBI & CIA in a epic feat of story telling. Beautifully written, it captures the journey of the rebirth of Islamic fundamentalism, vs the modern world.
The subplots and character journeys could be taken from non-fiction, especially the epic tale of FBI agent John O’Neill. The book is narrated by the author, which did not distract from the story.
My only criticism is that it was a little slow to get started, but the early chapters provide the back story for Al Queda leadership and help setup the bigger narrative. The insight into the FBI & CIA rivalry is well documented and the opportunities missed by their bloated bureaucracies is fascinating.
We all know what happened on that fateful day of 9/11, but this is the journey well worth reading/listening about that delivers us to the morning of September 11th 2001

Excellently researched. Captivating story.
I loved learning of the origins of Islamic fundamentalist, the foundations of al Qaeda andt the lead up to 9/11 in this exhaustively researched book. The author has crafted a fascinating and engaging account. His narration of his own work was as good as any voice talent available on Audible.
