Publisher's Summary

Read by the author.

Walking through Psalm 23 phrase by phrase, therapist and author K.J. Ramsey explores the landscape of our fear, trauma, and faith. When she stepped through her own wilderness of spiritual abuse and religious trauma, K.J. discovered that courage is not the absence of anxiety but the practice of trusting we will be held and loved no matter what.

How can we cultivate courage when fear overshadows our lives? How do we hear the Voice of Love when hate and harm shout loud? This book offers an honest path to finding that there is still a Good Shepherd who is always following you. Braiding contemplative storytelling, theological reflection, and practical neuroscience, Ramsey reveals a route into connection and joy that begins right where you are.

The Lord is My Courage is for the deconstructing and the dreamers, the afraid and the amazed, for those whose fear has not been fully shepherded but who can't seem to stop listening for their Good Shepherd's Voice.

A must-read for pastors and those with doubts

I so appreciate KJ Ramsey's willingness to explore not only her own experience of church abuse but to engage how we as readers can experience healing. Her writing helped me form a greater understanding of what I have experienced but didn't have the words to articulate.

Not only that but I have found ways to see God as with me, for me, near me. I now have tools to help me regulate my emotions when I am triggered and feel unsafe.

I think this book is a must read for every pastor today. It provides a window into the world of the people in your congregation and also gives a sense of what Christ-like leadership looks like. Not the CEO of today but the Good Shepherd of Christ. Plus every pastor needs a bit more understanding of how our bodies work, what safety truly requires, not simply how we have done church for the last 30 years.

For those who have faith or who are not sure what to do with faith these days, KJ provides room to explore, to rediscover God.

Bonus: Her narration is soothing and empathic.

More than an exposition

As someone recently tied to the weight of mental and physical suffering as well as being in vocational ministry, someone plunging himself into the Words written to bring life without feeling alive, someone seeking desperately to embrace hope within the walls of Doubting Castle; this book has for me, offered a key not made of steps and answers, but a Promise found within relationship.

KJ uses her relational writing to open doors not only of vulnerability and transparency, but of renewed hope where one’s thoughts, held so long without the ability to so comprehensively and compassionately put pen to paper, take form and life in order that the truth may be seen, the present felt, and the floodgates of love, joy, and peace to flow freely within.

Thank you

So helpful

I loved KJ’s narration of her own work, hearing the passion in her voice really helped to engage in this story. I appreciated how she weaved in trauma theory, concepts, and theological reflections. As someone with a chronic illness, and experiences of disappointment and abuse in church this has indeed given me courage.
