Shadowvale isn’t typical small-town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse. No one knows this as well as raven shifter Deacon Evermore, who, like everyone in his family, has a curse. While his position as Shadowvale’s peacekeeper lets him use that curse for good, he’d rather live anywhere else. He stays for his family but doubts he can last much longer.

Publisher's Summary
A trip to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. An art heist. And a locked-room mystery.
Alchemist Zoe Faust and her impish gargoyle sidekick Dorian Robert-Houdin travel to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris to investigate a mysterious discovery found in the wreckage of the tragic fire: a long-lost gargoyle illustration drawn by Victor Hugo himself.
When the work of art is stolen under impossible circumstances, Dorian must use his “little gray cells” — not to mention his culinary skills — to solve the crime and discover the true origins of where he came from.
Love armchair travel, Paris, and humorous mysteries? Don’t miss this Accidental Alchemist novella from USA Today bestselling and Anthony Award-winning author Gigi Pandian.
Includes delicious vegan recipes!
The Lost Gargoyle of Paris is an Accidental Alchemist Mystery novella and is less than half the length of the novels in the series. It stands alone, but if you want to hear more about Zoe, Dorian, and their misfit friends back in Portland, Oregon, check out The Accidental Alchemist, The Masquerading Magician, The Elusive Elixir, and The Alchemist's Illusion.

Series over-written, over-described, over-rated
The premise is great, I’d love these books if they were better written. The language is so prissy and un-natural, mundane things are over-described to an intolerable degree. The narrator speaks so carefully the natural cadence is gone and it sounds flat. There is little effort to make key ideas believable, or the main character interesting, she’s boring and predictable as can be. Zoe is supposed to be hundreds of years old, but seems shallow, immature and naive. Such a bummer, had potential.

Too much background info
If you’ve read the first book in this series, don’t bother with this one. The first 20 chapters are just catching you up on the background of who Zoe and Dorian are, -their likes, dislikes, quirks and history together. I found it tedious by the time the mystery began to get interesting and then, voila! It was solved.

Better as a Novella
The novella length suits this series as the author doesn’t pad it out with repetition from previous books. The ending was a bit abrupt but not horribly so. Dorian is perhaps a better character than Zoe with all her whinging and introspection.

A bit "money for old rope"
I'd only bother with this if you're a big fan or unfamiliar with the series as there is A LOT of repetition of what we already know. The plot is tenuous, the villain obvious, and Zoe seems to have been dummed down some what to make it. just about, hang together. It was free for me and short so I finished it, but it was a struggle!
