Story
When Olivia Shaw’s mother dies, the sophisticated food editor is astonished to learn she’s inherited a centuries-old English estate - and a title to go with it. Raw with grief and reeling from the knowledge that her reserved mother hid something so momentous, Olivia leaves San Francisco and crosses the pond to unravel the mystery of a lifetime. One glance at the breathtaking Rosemere Priory and Olivia understands why the manor, magnificent even in disrepair, was the subject of her mother’s exquisite paintings. What she doesn’t understand is why her mother never mentioned it.

Publisher's Summary
One of Travel + Leisure's most anticipated books of summer 2020.
From the Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author of When We Believed in Mermaids comes a story of four generations of women grappling with family betrayals and long-buried secrets.
It's been years since Zoe Fairchild has been to the small Devon village of her birth, but the wounds she suffered there still ache. When she learns that her old friend and grandmother's caretaker has gone missing, Zoe and her fifteen-year-old daughter return to England to help.
Zoe dreads seeing her estranged mother, who left when Zoe was seven to travel the world. As the four generations of women reunite, the emotional pain of the past is awakened. And to complicate matters further, Zoe must also confront the ex-boyfriend she betrayed many years before.
Anxieties spike when tragedy befalls another woman in the village. As the mystery turns more sinister, new grief melds with old betrayal. Now the four Fairchild women will be tested in ways they couldn't imagine as they contend with dangers within and without, desperate to heal themselves and their relationships with each other.
Critic Reviews
Audiofile Earphones Award Winner
“An ensemble cast of Sarah Naughton, Helen Lloyd, Esther Wane, and Pearl Hewitt delivers this well-crafted mystery. Accompanied by her daughter, Zoe Fairchild travels back to her home village of Devon, England, after her grandmother's caregiver goes missing. While there, Zoe meets up with her estranged mother, thus bringing together four generations of women who go about uncovering family secrets. This involved story couldn't have a better executed narration. Each of the four skilled performers voices one of the Fairchild women. Every chapter delivers a clear point of view without any disruption to the overall flow. All the narrators deliver authentic depictions of the characters' personalities, predicaments, and triumphs. This performance is a remarkable accomplishment.” (Audiofile Magazine)
“A woman’s strange disappearance brings together four strong women who struggle with their relationships, despite their need for one another. Fans of Sarah Addison Allen will appreciate the emphasis on nature and these women’s unique gifts in this latest by the author of When We Believed in Mermaids.” (Library Journal, starred review)
"The Lost Girls of Devon draws us into the lives of four generations of women as they come to terms with their relationships and a mysterious tragedy that brings them together. Written in exquisite prose with the added bonus of the small Devon village as a setting, Barbara O’Neal’s book will ensnare the reader from the first page, taking us on an emotional journey of love, loss, and betrayal." (Rhys Bowen, New York Times and number one Kindle best-selling author of The Tuscan Child, In Farleigh Field, and the Royal Spyness series)

Slow Moving
I had high hopes for this book because I loved When We Were Mermaids by this author so that is the only reason I stuck with it. The story is so slow moving and has zero excitement or something to grab you. The characters are so meh that you never get attached to any of them. Don't waste your time on this one.

So much potential but fell short!
I had high hopes for this book based on the description and the setting. However, it dragged on endlessly in parts and became incredibly boring because of too many frivolous details and conversations.
The mysterious disappearances could have evolved more and some details about the disappearances and reasons were unbelievable.
Some of narration was annoying and I did not care for the ending.

Too much romance fluff for me
I’m not into romance novels and this came too close to one for me. Also was not a fan of the narrator. The voice was too whiny for the main character and the male voices just sounded stodgy and weird. Very sorry to say anything negative because I know the creators put a lot of effort into their works but I rely on reviews so thought I should be honest.

What a heart warming story!
I actually loved this story. It was full if high emotion, laughter, love, trauma and hate. The endless struggle to find emotional feelings can turn from one set of feelings to the other in just a twist. I couldn’t put this book down. I started reading in the afternoon and finished the next morning! What a beautifully written storyline. Thank you. You brought peace into my heart.

Characters Unlikeable, Narration Irritating
If you can last through about the first third of the book, the storyline starts to sort its self out — somewhat, but the narration remains less than satisfying and most of the characters unlikable.
Even with several narrators, not one does a good job of differentiating the characters, which adds to the muddled, irritating quality of this book. I can’t imagine that The Lost Girls of Devon would be any better in print than it is in this audio version.
This was a general disappointment, which is too bad, as the story idea had possibilities.

I’m gutted
It took awhile into the story for me to let go and get lost in the rather flowery and ethereal emotions of each character. But once I did - I was completely committed. Anyone who has had a challenging mother/daughter dynamic beware. My heart is pierced and in pain - in the most beautiful of ways. Look at me - now I’m sounding flowery and ethereal.

First book I did not enjoy
This book not engaging and was extremely boring. I kept waiting for the story to play out. The ending was rushed and predictable. I also did not really care for Zoe/the main character’s voice. It sounded like she was about to cry the whole when she spoke.

Not My Cuppa!
I got thru the entire book, but I don't know why or how. The narration of Zoe was insipid and whiney, especially when relaying the other characters' lines. Maybe none of them were particularly likable, and maybe that was because they were shallow.

Wow, what a good book. I highly recommend reading this one. The characters are so well developed I feel like I know them. Here is a story of women that face seemingly insurmountable obstacle's and personal pain. The effect of unconditional love and awareness. It's a tear jerker, beware.
