Story
Fifty thousand gun-toting paladins march behind him, all baptized in angel blood, thirsty to burn unbelievers. Only the janissaries can stand against them. Their living legend, Kevah, once beheaded a magus amid a hail of ice daggers. But ever since his wife disappeared, he spends his days in a haze of hashish and poetry. To save the kingdom, Kevah must conquer his grief and become the legend he once was. But Micah writes his own legend in blood, and his righteous conquest will stop at nothing. When the gods choose sides, a legend will be etched upon the stars.

Story
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Publisher's Summary
When you are all out of heroes, all that's left are the villains.
Black Herran was a dread demonologist, and the most ruthless general in all Essoran. She assembled the six most fearsome warriors to captain her armies: a necromancer, a vampire lord, a demigod, an orcish warleader, a pirate queen, and a twisted alchemist. Together, they brought the whole continent to its knees.... Until the day she abandoned her army, on the eve of total victory.
Forty years later, she must bring her former captains back together for one final stand, in the small town of Tarnbrooke - the last bastion against a fanatical new enemy tearing through the land, intent on finishing the job Black Herran started years before.
Seven bloodthirsty monsters. One town. Their last hope.

Suicide Squad meets Joe Ambercrombie
40 years after The Black Harren abandons her army on the eve of battle, a new evil arises that only the six villainous captains she spurned have a hope of defeating.
This is Suicide Squad meets Joe Ambercrombie. The first 25% is recruitment of the six and the last 75% is war. It’s very plot driven so if you’re looking for a deep character dive you won’t find that here but if you like grim dark/war fantasy I think you’ll absolutely love this. It’s fast paced, exciting, unique, darkly humorous and has all the morally grey/villainous characters you could ask for. Side note: The narrator is fabulous, every voice is very distinct, if you like audiobooks.
⚠️ adult content note: heavy violence and language, no sexual content

Truly Magnificent
This has easily become one of my favorite books. The characters, though all messed up in one way or another, somehow left me rooting for them till the end. It’s a masterful twist on an amazing story, making you care about and cheer for the most vile and wicked the world has to offer. A true masterpiece.

Confusing narrator and so many plot holes
First, I'm confused by the choice of the narrator. Four of the seven main characters are female, and the narrator doesn't handle them well with three of them being indistinguishable from each other. Did they think that it wouldn't be taken seriously if it was narrated by a female? I've listened to many books with a gifted female narrator, who would have pulled off what little story there was. There also wasn't enough pause between shifting points of view, which makes it hard to keep track.
Second, without any spoilers the plot makes no sense from start to finish and lacked originally. It was like the plot of the Witcher told with D&D characters. The battles were just lame and all the same, mostly involving loss of limb. If there's going to be a battle, do it justice and made it epic.

amazing! Really hope it helps you buy this book
this was a great book. pace was good, and the story keeps your mind filled with great images. I am a anime lover so I got a great trill after getting in to the book and finding it to be a great take on 7 deadly sins but dark and creative. I love the fact that age and time has a factor in this book as well. narrator was perfect and fit the story like a glove. nothing worse than a great book turned bad because of actor chosen to read. this thank the gods is not one of them, he did amazing.

This story was a wonderful addition to the trope of Seven necessary heroes. The character development was outstanding. The characters were all so full of life and the world so immersive that I couldn’t turn it off. I’d definitely recommend this story to anyone who loves an ensemble of well crafted characters.

Cartoon characters make this
The most interesting thing to happen to a character happens in the opening chapter and isn’t really explained very well. After that it gets more and more predictable.
The narrator does a decent job but the story is just a bit dull. The characters are paper thin…the mad scientist is everything you’d expect, the orc is confused by ‘silly humans’.
It’s fine for the first half or so then I just got bored. Fell asleep and missed the last two hours and I’m not even interested enough to go back and listen to what I missed.

Fun
It’s a good story and some interesting and some hilarious characters. There are some within there I’d like to read more of if Cameron Johnston is going to write more within this world but it works well as a stand-alone.
I enjoyed reading this book rather than listening as I found the narrator overacted it somewhat, which was a real shame.

A very good time with some very bad people
Great performance and an engaging, visceral story.
A little slow to start, but I found myself completely drawn in by the mid point.
A handful of huge reveals are dropped a little too casually and one of the seven adheres far too closely to stereotype (making his POV chapter a drag), but these were minor flaws in an overall extremely enjoyable audiobook.

The bad, the even badder and the ugly
A really good premise and a really good story and hopefully there will be more tales of these despicable characters (some of whom I quite liked) but please get a different narrator, I am sure he is good at narrating but not a story like this, he was just childish not worthy of them

Pleasing find
I’m no longer a big fan of fantasy, but I took a punt on this and was not disappointed. Some good characters and gritty writing made it most enjoyable. Some of the plot twists were unexpected but a few were predictable, as were some of the characters. Overall an enjoyable read, made more so by being a standalone story, so no waiting around for more parts.
