Critic Reviews

“Jean Becker’s beautiful book, The Man I Knew, is a touching and fascinating look at a man both of us loved and admired - George H.W. Bush. As his chief of staff for almost two decades, Becker lovingly reveals stories about her boss that capture all aspects of his life as the ‘Former Leader of the Free World’, as he sometimes called himself after leaving the White House. Her book is a must read for anyone interested in one of the very best presidents in our history.” (James A. Baker III)

"Other than Barbara Bush, Jean Becker probably knew George H.W. Bush better than anyone, so her enchanting, moving and altogether wonderful memoir of her years as his chief of staff is aptly titled. THE MAN I KNEW is an important - no, necessary - addition to the shelf of books about the most beautifully-souled man who ever led this country." (Christopher Buckley)

"What really stunned me about President Bush 41 is that eventually his impression of me doing him was better than my original impression of him. No one said ‘na ga da it’ (not going to do it) quite like 41! I am honored that our friendship is part of this funny, insightful book of a man I came to greatly admire.” (Dana Carvey)

You Will NOT Be Disappointed!

I saw an interview with the author on CNN the weekend this book was released, and although George H W Bush’s politics don’t necessarily align with mine, it sounded interesting, so I thought I’d check it out,
… And in the end couldn’t put it down!

This is a WONDERFULLY written personal (account by 41’s Chief of Staff. It’s a real inside look into the intimate relationships President Bush had with his family, friends, staff, and many other interpersonal relationships he had throughout his life. This book includes many stories recall by the author herself, as well as actual notes & letters the president had written to those clothes & important to him throughout his life. It really shows you WHO George H W Bush was, what he stood for, what his values were, and what things were MOST important to him, like living a life of service!

I’m SO glad I read this book, as I learned SO MUCH about this LOVING family man & LOYAL friend, versus the typical things one might read about a politician. I also came away with a MUCH better appreciation of the sacrifices & service this GENEROUS man gave to our country!
… This book was just SO warm & inviting, that I ended up reading it in one sitting! HIGHLY recommend!

A view of 41 that many of us never knew.

What a wonderful perspective into the life of a great American! Best book I've "read" this year.
