Two women. Many aliases. Meg Williams. Maggie Littleton. Melody Wilde. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She's a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to be—a college student. A life coach. A real estate agent. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she's done, you've likely lost everything.

Story
Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him. Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere. But today I’m finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband.

Beth Montgomery seems to have the perfect life: a beautiful house in the hills above Los Angeles, a handsome, ambitious husband, and plans of starting a family. So it doesn't occur to her to worry when the news breaks of a quadruple homicide across town, a botched drug deal that leaves an undercover officer among the dead. Beth certainly would never think to tie the murders to the sudden reappearance in her life of wild, sexy Cassie Ogilvy, the estranged best friend she hasn't seen since they were college roommates.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Publisher's Summary
Newlyweds Alice and Jake are a picture-perfect couple. Alice, once a singer in a well-known rock band, is now a successful lawyer. Jake is a partner in an up-and-coming psychology practice. Their life together holds endless possibilities. After receiving an enticing wedding gift from one of Alice's prominent clients, they decide to join an exclusive and mysterious group known only as the Pact.
The goal of the Pact seems simple: to keep marriages happy and intact. And most of its rules make sense: Always answer the phone when your spouse calls. Exchange thoughtful gifts monthly. Plan a trip together once per quarter. Never mention the Pact to anyone. Alice and Jake are initially seduced by the glamorous parties, the sense of community, their widening social circle of like-minded couples. And then one of them breaks the rules. The young lovers are about to discover that for adherents to the Pact, membership, like marriage, is for life. And the Pact will go to any lengths to enforce that rule. For Jake and Alice, the marriage of their dreams is about to become their worst nightmare.

What a good idea that was completely wasted
The author had a great idea for a story but got lost with the characters. Alice and Jake were made to appear so stupid I felt no connection with them. It was as if the book repeated itself to be longer. The end was perhaps the worst cop out I've ever encountered.

The Pact = Scientology
If you substitute the word Pact for The Church, you'd have yourself a book about Scientology.
From the Pact's leadership, surveillance of members, prison camp, and torture, it's a pretty good description of what real life is like in The Church of Scientology as described by former members -- many of whom have written books themselves.
The narrator's attempt at a woman's voice was excruciating. I kept thinking of Mr. Bill every time Alice would speak (Oh nooooooooo...!). Not only was her voice annoying, but the character itself was very boring. And the whole rocker turned attorney bit was just lame.
All in all, I found the book pretty cheesy and not worth my time or money.

Great Idea - Awful Story
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It wasn't time well spent - I kept waiting for the big pay off and it never happened.
Has The Marriage Pact turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, again, it was a great idea for a story, but it fell short - really short.
What does Tom Taylorson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He did a good job.
Could you see The Marriage Pact being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I could see the idea of the story made into a movie or TV series, but a lot would have to be reworked.
Any additional comments?
Don't buy it. It wasn't terrible, but it was frustrating that it could have been so good and it never was.

It Could Have Been Great!
NO SPOILER REVIEW: I really wanted to love this story! The beginning was quite interesting and gave me hope but ultimately I was let down. There are so many cookie-cutter thrillers out there that tell us nothing new. This one started off great with a unique plot but then it just became more and more implausible.
I put in more than 13 hours listening to this story but in the end, I felt cheated because the ending was so abrupt. I feel like the author spent so much time developing the plot but then just through something together at the end. I will say though that the narrator is excellent.
Overall, if you don't mind loose ends and want to listen to a story with a unique plot and great narrator, go for this one.

This was an interesting book!
This had a pretty unique plot - a newly married couple gets invited to become part of an exclusive club, designed to help keep couples married for life. The premise was really creative, and the author did a terrific job of building up the conflict. What's interesting about this book is just like any other cult or abusive relationship -- in passing conversation, you think, "How could they possibly get caught up in that?" But it's the frog slowly boiling in water scenario, and the author really knocked it out of the park with the build-up. The character development was outstanding, and the narrator was superb. I'm not sure I liked the ending, though. Not going to give it away here to spoil it, but all in all it was a pretty fun listen. I barely put it down... highly recommend for anyone who enjoys suspenseful drama.

ridiculous from start to finished
Narrator was good. The story needed you to let go of any sensible thought and go with it. so many times you think to yourself "but you wouldn't do that" or " oh come on!" or " that wouldn't happen!" I tried my hardest and for the first 50 chapters I thought to myself just go with it but no it was just to far fetched and came to nothing in the end. Not good unfortunately

Captivating, Addictive, Flawed But Enjoyable
❤️️ Remember The Game with Michael Douglas? If your answer is no, please let me know what it’s like to wake up without everything hurting. Anyway, this book is sort of like that. There’s a lot of disorientation and conspiracy and that idea that anybody could be in on it. All good stuff.
💜 Alice and Jack join a cult. They don’t know that that’s what they’re doing. They think they’re signing a marriage pact, a sort of promise to put their marriage first. But it’s a cult. An influential, powerful one with members everywhere.
💚 The idea is fantastic and I really enjoyed the listen. There are high stakes and interesting characters and intrigue. I’m about to say some less good things about this, but I want to emphasise that I genuinely liked it. I think that’s why I wanted it to delve deeper.
💛 However, I struggled with the unwieldy subject of motivation. I spent most of the time thinking that this was just an excuse for sadists to sadist. An elaborate power trip. But then why do you need a legal agreement for that? It’s not like they could get out even if they wanted to and that contract wouldn’t hold up in any real court. There’s an argument that they were the catalysts of their own demise, but that could be achieved with a prenup...
❤️️ It’s the exposition and pace however that really let this down. It feels rushed. Alice and Jack aren’t married long enough for there to be such issues. I was bewildered as to why Jack was so enamoured with Alice. Moreover, I didn’t feel familiar enough with the pact to appreciate the infractions. They should have at least had some good times in the cult before the bad. Otherwise there is literally nothing good about joining. They signed something and then their lives got ruined. Full stop. Basically, I wanted mooooorrre,

SOUNDBITE
🎧 My first time listening to Tom Taylorson and he was very good. A gravelly voice, General American English accent. Good character differentiation. It was a simple production as it’s all from Jack’s perspective, but generally well done. One star deducted for occasionally dodgy accent.

SHALL I COMPARE THEE TO…
As I said, this reminded me of The Game (1997). There’s also something of Eyes Wide Shut (1999), but without the kink. Or The Skulls (2000) sans college degree.

Tense! What on earth is that accent supposed to b?
If you can't do an accent, don't bother trying. A great riveting story but the narrators appalling attempt at an Irish accent was grating.

Predictable but Readable
Started off well. Parts were fabulously gripping but it's almost like the end is rushed and although predictable, very vanilla.

Initially intriguing, continues to disappoint.
Intriguing beginning, but story becomes more and more ridiculous and I barely made it to the end. it is well read though.

Meh
Really bad Irish accents and female voices brought me out of the story. Story seemed dragged out with not much reward

Not bad for a freebie
It's ok for a freebie however found the narrator's voice of Alice extremely annoying! I see what the writer aimed to do with the ending but could of been delivered better perhaps. It's entertaining enough overall

Didn’t get the ending
It’s a strange far fetched story but great characters abd narration. It annoyed me in that they didn’t check many details when they joined the Pact!

Friend
A very long listen. A rather inconceivable storyline, big brother eyes and ears everywhere? Interesting ending...
