Publisher's Summary

A heartbreakingly beautiful novel, The Memory Box unlocks an unforgettable epic story of love and war, from the million-copy-selling author of The Letter, Kathryn Hughes. If you adored The Nightingale, The Tuscan Contessa or My Name is Eva, this is the book for you.

Some love stories can't be forgotten....

Jenny Tanner opens the box she has cherished for decades. Contained within are her most precious mementoes, amongst them a pebble, a carving and a newspaper cutting she can hardly bear to read. But Jenny knows the time is finally here. After the war, in a mountainside village in Italy, she left behind a piece of her heart. However painful, she must return to Cinque Alberi. And lay the past to rest.

After a troubled upbringing, Candice Barnes dreams of a future with the love of her life - but is he the man she believes him to be? When Candice is given the opportunity to travel to Italy with Jenny, she is unaware the trip will open her eyes to the truth she's been too afraid to face. Could a place of goodbyes help her make a brave new beginning?

Her usual good book with one exception

I have listened to most of the books on audible by by ‘Kathryn Hughes and enjoyed them a lot. Ms Hughes needs to be aware of her audience and be neutral in cultural wars I didn’t need to hear her take pleasure of homosexual men being married . GOD called it an abomination and I feel it has no place in writing for a general audience. I almost stopped the recording to return the book but then she moved in to others subjects. It was heart breaking or bitter sweet is better word. It was very slow getting started but when it picked up was a great start Ms Hughes is a very good writer especially ww11 my favorite. Genre

Like nothing you've ever heard

I've read thousands of books, and listened to thousands more. But this was unlike anything I'd ever heard before. such a heart-warming/heart-rending story both at once. Incredible. The narrator is also one of the best I've ever heard. It's like your sitting next to your Grandmother hearing tales of her past life. Would give more stars if I could!

Historical fiction comes alive

I loved this book. It kept you guessing as to what was going to happen and what occurred in the past. I loved all the characters and all their adventures despite there limitations. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read historical fiction.

Love Story Not Historical Fiction

I'm halfway through, and not sure I can finish. This is NOT historical fiction, it's a love story set in the 1940s told by the main character in 2019. The supporting character is dating a narcissist and it's hard to listen to him groom her. I like historical fiction because you learn so much about history in an entertaining way. This is not that. This is a story about different types of love and abuse.

Good story…

Good story, however, The narration drove me crazy because it would change from loud voice to so quiet I’d have to turn up volume to hear, only to have the loud voice come back a minute later and make me jump! Very frustrating when listening while driving.

Tear jerker

It starts out very slowly. Almost put it down. But I am so glad I stuck with it to the end. It was a memorable story.

Memories

The story was great, loved the way it was narrated, from young and old. Audible was done beautifully.
It was a WWII novel, but it didn’t overwhelm the story line. It was more a view point how war changes peoples lives!
I picked this novel, because I found it looking up Italian fiction. 90% of the book was not about Italy.
I would say it is more a WWII love story!

Absolutely stunning

Beautifully written and wholly original. The narrator is at the highest level of her craft, especially as the character of Jenny.
The Memory Box deserves a standing ovation, both to Author and Narrator/Actor.

WONDERFUL READ.

It’s been a while since I enjoyed a book s much as this one. The characters were marvellously described and the narrator brought each of them to life with her ability to slip from one accent to another. There were shocks & unexpected surprises throughout the book, particularly in the last quarter of the story. Overall, reading this book left a warm, fuzzy feeling that lasted even beyond my husband getting home from work! 😁

Great story great listen

Loved it, a heartwarming story with a twist at the end. Made me laugh, made me cry. Great characters made real by the narrator Rachel Atkins.
Now for my next Kathryn Hughes book, can't wait.

Fantastic Narration !!

A real feel good story, but it's the narrator that makes this such a great listen, one of the best I've heard and I've got over 200 books in my library! Just off to search for other books she's narrated now.
