Publisher's Summary

The world needs real men, real bad. And there are all sorts of conflicting ideas and messages about what a "real man" is (and is not). Is a real man one who hunts, loves sports, grills meat, fixes cars, and climbs mountains? Sure, sometimes. But that's not really the point of being a man and it's not the purpose for which men were made.

Into our cultural confusion, Brant Hansen paints a refreshingly specific, compelling picture of what men are made to be: "Keepers of the Garden." Protectors and defenders. He calls for men of all interests and backgrounds (including "avid indoorsmen" like himself) to be ambitious about the right things and to see themselves as defenders of the vulnerable, with whatever resources they have.

Using short chapters loaded with must-have wisdom and Brant's signature humor, The Men We Need explains the essence of masculinity in a fresh, thoughtful, and entertaining way that will inspire any man who dares to listen.

This is the book we need

This is one of the best books I’ve read/listened to in a while and I read/listen to a lot of books! Entertaining and funny and really great info. Really great analysis of what makes a man. I’m going to go buy all of Brant’s other books. And re-listen to this one.

The Book Men Need

Brant Hansen has written the book that the vast majority of American Christian males can actually benefit from.

It is decidedly not academic and will appeal to all of us who have not shot an Elk, rebuilt a jet fighter or graced the cover of Body Builders Monthly.

But it ain't wimpy! No, it will challenge you to the core to come out of hiding, to declare your total allegiance to Jesus, and to adopt the agonizingly difficult practices involved in spiritual transformation.

Purchase 6 copies now (go ahead, I'll wait) and put together the battalion of men you want to enter battle with behind enemy lines. (If not, just raise the white flag because you're toast if you go it alone against the devil, the world and your stinkin' flesh.)

Let's do this!

Like Opus Dei but silly

I just finished Brant Hansen’s ‘The Men We Need: God's Purpose for the Manly Man, the Avid Indoorsman, Or Any Man Willing to Show Up’. This sounds cliché but I wish I could travel back in time and give myself a copy of this book; I grew up without many positive male figures— zero Christian male figures. I made so many mistakes, and injured so many, as a young man who was totally absorbed with his own ego, pleasure, and advancement. Hindsight is 2020, and perhaps I wouldn’t even have read this book at age 18 or 23, but I feel passionate about giving this book out to all the men in my circle of influence. Hansen comes from a different Christian tradition than me, but his work rings with the same practical flavor of the sayings the desert fathers, it has a playfulness like Therese of Lisieux, and the paradoxical wit of GK Chesterton and José Maria Escriva.

I needed to hear this

I plan to buy for my 2 sons and my 2 son-in-laws.
It’s easy to shrug and say “that’s just how I am” to excuse a lot of behavior or inaction as a man. Brant’s book is holding me accountable for those thoughts and really making me take a hard look at some areas I need to for the sake of my family.
