Publisher's Summary

London, 1865.

Vera Sorokina loves reading the Penny Dreadfuls and immersing herself in tales of adventure, mystery, and romance. Her own days are filled with the often mundane work of running the book and print shop she owns with her father. The shop offers her the freedom and income to employ and protect the poverty-stricken Londoners she’s come to care about, and it gives her father something to do other than long for their hometown of St. Petersburg. She is grateful for the stability in their lives, but she often feels lonely.

Brogan Donnelly was born and raised in Ireland but has lived in London for several years, where he’s built a career as a Penny Dreadful writer. He has dedicated himself to the plight of the poor with the help of his sister. His membership in the secretive Dread Penny Society allows him to feel he isn’t entirely wasting his life, yet he feels dissatisfied. With no one to share his life with but his sister, he fears London will never truly feel like home.

Brogan and Vera’s paths cross, and the attraction is both immediate and ill-advised. Vera knows from past experience that writers are never to be trusted, and Brogan has reason to suspect not everything at her print shop is aboveboard. When the growing criminal enterprise run by the elusive and violent Mastiff begins targeting their area of London, Brogan and Vera must work together to protect the community they’ve both grown to love. But that means they’ll need to learn to trust each other with dangerous secrets that have followed both of them from their home countries.

Again a great story!!!

I cannot wait for the next book! Every story is a special story of three stories in one! Ms Eden is a very gifted author, who keeps one on the edge of their seat ever wondering what will happen next, how will they solve this mystery and how on earth will they get out of this mess!

Another great plus is the narrator Justine Eyre. She reads and changes voices so effortlessly that you feel almost like you are sitting in a theater watching a live play unfold before you. Well done Sarah!

I cannot wait for further stories!!!

Justine Eyre vividly brings to life Sarah M. Eden's characters and storyline. The ongoing search for the Mastiff, and the men and women who fight him are in the best of Victorian adventure tradition (and I honestly keep expecting to see Sherlock Holmes show up: they're THAT good).

The funnest language & books in this book

I love books that have real history to them. It could be the tiniest amount. How people talked, what foods they like, or how they dressed. This book brings all characters to life. Especially the South Londoners. That’s the new language you will love learning throughout this book of love, adventure, crime, & drama. Not to mention the books in the book you also get to read!

Very good!

I thought this was a very refreshing bk. I loved how everyone worked together, & it didn't matter what race, color, where you were from, etc., ALL were working against evil/bad. Wish humanity would stop fighting each other!

Entertaining 4th book

This book is actually 3 stories in one. “The Merchant and the Rogue” is actually the title of the Dread Penny short story by Mr. King (aka. Elizabeth). It parallels the actual story where our Irish Dread Penny author, Brogan Donnelly, goes undercover for the DPS in order to find out what’s happening with the Mastive, and ends up uncovering a fraudulent printing scam, along with blackmail and extortion. Brogan is the “rouge” who finds his soulmate in the “merchant”, the co-owner of a print and book shop. We learn a little more about the characters from the first 3 books as well. The 3rd story is written by Brogan, entitled “The Dead Zoo”. I listened to the book twice. The narrator is excellent in all her accents, and is easy to listen to. I am not sure “The Dead Zoo” concluded in this book. Although the main story does have an ending, there is a definite cliff hanger at the end. Thankfully, the next book will be available soon. It focuses on the Doctor in the DPS. I hope there is another story soon that updates all the characters’ stories together. It should be possible in the 6th book.

When is the next "installment"? We MUST see the Mastiff vanquished! Whose penny dreadful stories will we read next? I need closure!

Another winner

I enjoyed the latest installment of this series. Again, I didn't listen to the Penny Dreadful stories. I just don't care for that kind of content. But I enjoyed the main story. I was afraid there wouldn't be enough interaction with the Dread Penny Society members for me, but thankfully that wasn't the case. Justine does a good job with thr different accents. I am glad she has read all of these so far because that way the characters that appear in multiple stories sound the same!

Nice look into immigrants-in-London lives

Having lived in London and loved feeling the history all around me, it’s great to take a step back through time a imagine the lives of Londoners in Victorian/Edwardian times.

Loved it!!!😍😍😍😍

Brilliantly written and planned out.
Also Loooove the Romance she uses.
Just clean, genuine affection. Totally relationship goals. The mini stories popped in also adds variety without detracting from the main story.
The narrating was PHENOMENAL. I love anything read by Justine Eyer, she does the accents so well.
Absolutely Stunning book. Definitely recommend.😊😉

Mystery and mayhem

I really struggled to follow the story line with this book, and kept losing the plot,I managed to stay with it till the end, but felt disappointed as I really enjoyed a previous book by this author,

Enjoyable

This is the 3rd in Penny Dreadful Society & I'm really enjoying the way it's really 3 stories in 1.

I like the way the story of mystery & intrigue runs from first story then continues on through the series as the family's get bigger.

I like the era of whence set & how this club helps & protects children, women & people in need.

I love the cloak & dagger done so subtly with the Penny Network 🙂
