Publisher's Summary

Bloomsbury presents The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon, read by Alana Kerr Collins.

In the New York Times best-selling second novel in the epic Bone Season series, Paige Mahoney may have broken out of prison, but neither the government nor her prison guards are going to let her escape so easily.

It is a dark time for clairvoyants in London. Scion, the ruling government, is in league with the Rephaim, an extraordinarily powerful, otherworldly race that intends to make humans its slaves.

Paige Mahoney may have succeeded in leading a mass break-out from the brutal camp, Sheol I, where she and other clairvoyants were systematically imprisoned, but she hasn't truly escaped. As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, and the ruthless leader of the Rephaim sets out in pursuit, Paige must find safety in a London underworld and a clairvoyant community that is beginning to crumble.

Critic Reviews

"An intoxicating urban-fantasy series...Shannon's haunting dystopian universe is rich in detail, consistent, suffused with familiar afternotes.... Like Paige Mahoney, Shannon now has proven staying power. Her fans will be calling for more." (NPR)

"A gripping sequel." (US Weekly)

"If anyone was wondering how Shannon would stretch this story into seven books, the gut punch of the last line in The Mime Order will instead have them on tenterhooks for the next five." (USA Today)

Just Mesmerizing! Fantastic!

I love sci-fi/fantasy and I have to be really impressed to spend money/credits or whatever on a second book and really, really, really impressed to bring home four. But the first book just knocked my socks off. If you don’t care for science fiction or fantasy, I’m pretty sure this boos and the sequels would convert you. The narrator is excellent. I was a bit thrown when I started listening to the second book because it sounded like a different person. It did take me a while to get used to that, but one becomes so immersed in this story that one must continue. Now I’m used to this small change and looking forward to book #3.

The characters are so well portrayed in this future land of England. I have the opportunity to stand up & cheer as well as moan & groan when they aren’t making good judgements. I am constantly pulled from one end to the other trying to figure out who to trust, who to believe and what wondrous abilities our heroine is going to uncover in her basket of uncanny tricks.

It’s a love story that is filled with heartache and powerful feelings. The circumstances at the end of book two still have me wondering how this powerful attraction can possibly end in a “happy ever after” scenario. There is a heart wrenching account of a young love that lasted for years on one side, but it is not to be. I could just feel the heartache.

The story moves fast. There is so much happening all the time that it’s hard to put down. I was constantly trying to find a good place to take a break, but breaks were hard for me to find. I just had to read a little more because always there was something that I wanted to find out. In other words, this book is well written and constantly holds one’s attention.

Great story with a bit of everything: romance, ET’s, war, monsters, betrayals, friendships, freedom fighters, slaves, gladiator-type matches, a coming of awareness for a young girl, and on and on and on.

I believe everyone should at least read the first book. And then see if they can stop there. It’s like Lay’s chips - you can’t read just one!

Cudos to a terrific writer, Samantha Shannon, and a great narrator, Alana Kerr Collins. Ladies, ya done good!!!

Gripping

I finished this in just a few days. I couldn't keep myself away. A stunning improvement on the previous title that was already great itself.
