Publisher's Summary

Michael Jordan credits George Mumford with transforming his on-court leadership of the Bulls, helping Jordan lead the team to six NBA championships. Mumford also helped Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum, and Lamar Odom and countless other NBA players turn around their games. A widely respected public speaker and coach, Mumford is sharing his own story and the strategies that have made these athletes into stars in The Mindful Athlete: The Secret to Pure Performance. His proven, gentle but groundbreaking mindfulness techniques can transform the performance of anyone with a goal, be they an Olympian, weekend warrior, executive, hacker, or artist.

Mumford's deeply moving personal story is unforgettable. A basketball player at the University of Massachusetts (where he roomed with Dr. J, Julius Erving), injuries forced Mumford out of the game he loved. The meds that relieved the pain of his injuries also numbed him to the emptiness he felt without the game and eventually led him to heroin. After years as a functioning addict, Mumford enrolled in Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program, and made meditation, on and off the cushion, the center of his life. He kicked drugs, earned a master's degree in counseling psychology and began teaching meditation to inmates and others.

When Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls to play baseball in 1993, the team was in crisis. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, contacted Dr. Kabat-Zinn to find someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to the struggling team - someone who would have credibility and could speak the language of his players. Kabat-Zinn led Jackson to Mumford and their partnership began. Mumford has worked with Jackson and each of the eleven teams he coached to become NBA champions. His roster of champion clients has since blossomed way beyond basketball to include corporate executives, Olympians, and athletes.

Worth the listen

Great insight. Applies to more than just sports. Really to everyday life. I would consider listening to it a few times

For the athlete to learn mindfulness....

NOT for the student of mindfulness who is looking to apply it to athletics.

That said, for its intended audience, it would probably be career transforming.

I was a student of mindfulness already, looking for more subtle and less obvious ways to be more mindful during performance and practice.

His explanations were mostly basic and obvious for an intermediate student of the mind, success psychology and eastern thought. (Which is blended in the text)

It fell short of my expectations because I had the wrong expectations. That isn't the purpose of the book.

The purpose of the book is to introduce athletes, who have essentially no knowledge of these subjects, to the basic ideas and practices that can help them.

If you are an athlete who wants a mental edge with minimal mumbo-jumbo and psycho-babble then this book IF USED REGULARLY will transform your game. (These are "practices". They don't work without practice)

If you are versed in the subjects mentioned above, this book is probably not for you.

Hope this helps.

Amazing

This is a must-read (or listen) for any competitive athlete. I learned how to reframe my thoughts as I approach my workouts and competitions to a more constructive and conscious experience as opposed to doubt or fear.

Good but not as informative as I hoped.

The practical application was not explained well and left me wanting however the conceptual time was plentiful

Talks about the importance of being mindful

Moral of the book: the utility in the practice of mindfulness. Not well-organized. Overall do not think it's a worthwhile investment due to low quality/$ ratio.

Great Theory for Meditation intro

Easy language, ended within 10 days.

But dont expect many practices. Only one simple breathing practice. If you enjoy, try nei kung routines.

Long story...

It's just a looong story with a boring narrator. Story keeps giving examples trying to prove the same point over and over again. It never goes deep into the meditation itself and it doesn't give any practical example on how it should it done.

Worst Audio Book ever!

I honestly can’t say if it’s the narrator or the content but rarely have I ever come across such a lack lustre piece of work.

The narrator’s tone does nothing but make me want to sleep, like something from those self help tapes for insomniacs from back in the day.

So awful is it I have no interest in listening to the actual words spoken, his voice fades into the background and the meaning lost to me.

This is supposed to be inspirational but in fact is bland and uninspiring. I don’t think it’s all the narrators fault as the content seems to be rather poor and not well written - or maybe the audio version was done half assed, it would explain a lot.

It’s lucky to get a 1 it’s that bad - the scoring doesn’t go any lower.

Beautiful book!

I didn’t expect this, I am a coach and I definitely will be applying the knowledge I have gained from this book. The “Country of now” will be something that will stay with me especially when testing maximal repetitions.

Nothing new, just a different voice.

If anything, a mash up of Covey, Tao and numerous others, which is perhaps helpful if you’re unfamiliar with these.

pamphlet book

this book is basically a pamphlet for this guys own business sales. nothing to be to be gained or learned here... don't bother purchasing it. there are other far better books out there that cover similar material in a much better way.

For a book about flow, there is very little flow

Don't get me wrong, i enjoyed it enough; the concepts are interesting and challenging. However, it lacks any flow between these concepts, leaving you feeling like you have a list rather than a narrative.

The narrator did a standout job

confused, rambling and ultimately unhelpful

The author knows processional sport, not writing a book on how to be a better athlete. The book has good points awash in a sea of rambling, undirected mess. Couldnt bring myself to finish it.
