Publisher's Summary

"When it comes to dating, I seem to be going around in a circle. The ones I want don't want me, and the ones who want me, I don't want." (Amelia)

I don’t know, I just think there’s too much miscommunication between guys and girls. I mean, no one knows what the fuck is going on. We need to have the discussion. We need to vent it and get it out in the open,” I said, grabbing my drink from the bedside table.

_______ sat on the edge of the bed and put his shirt back on. “What do you want to know?”

“I just want to know what guys are thinking. I mean we have sex and stuff and nothing lasting ever comes of it,” I said, taking a cigarette out and lighting it. I knew I shouldn’t be smoking in the room, but I was too drunk to care.

“I don’t think I should say. We don’t know everything girls are thinking. I think some things are better left unsaid.”

“I want to know. I’d prefer shit to be clearer, because I’m always confused,” I replied. I could tell he was still a bit sexually frustrated, but he seemed okay to chat.

“Go ahead then, ask what you want. I’ll try give it to you as straight as I can. But don’t hate the messenger,” _______ responded, taking the champagne from my hand and having some.

“I won’t, promise. So why do guys act so interested and then not get in touch at all? ?” I asked."

Mixed Feelings

Definitely didn’t hate this one but it’s not a love either. Some of the key points made sense to situations in my own life while others didn’t. Even had a few light bulb moments too. However, there were times through the book where I felt Emilia was a bit pathetic and mega whiny. But as I continued listening I realized the same way Emilia felt and the same things and even thoughts she had, are the same many other girls (and guys) have in real life. Love is complicated and so is breaking up and/or dealing with rejection. Feelings in general are complicated! There isn’t a wrong or right way to approach these things and The Modern Break-Up is a good example of that. At the end of the day, one common feeling for us all is to be loved.

Don’t waste your time

This book is pretty awful—more like a whiny college girls diary than a self-help manual. The entire thing is dialogue between 4 characters, but with only 2 narrators, which was not only confusing, but boring. There is no real advice here, and many of the scenes were off-putting, if not downright disturbing (prepare yourself for some graphic sex scenes—we’re all adults here, but these seemed completely unnecessary to the story in my opinion). Glad it was short, but not short enough!

Relatable

I really enjoyed this book a lot. I was able to relate to the story in many ways. At this time in my life I needed to read this book.

Barf

I don’t know what I was expecting, but this was not it. I mean, this chick is so whiny and insecure and damaged…I CANNOT! If I could give negative stars, I would.

This book just made me angry. The narration was terrible. The story was terrible. If this is what is happening in the real world of dating, I will absolutely choose to be by myself forever. Egads!

Wasted a credit on this

Boring as can be. This is not a self help book, it’s a very dully written and read book. I couldn’t even finish.

I wish I could get my audible credit back

This was awful. Characters would get introduced without any context. The author, a man, attempts to speak for women and has no clue nor right to speak from a woman’s perspective.

Poorly constructed. Poorly written… DO NOT BOTHER unless you love platitudes and hyperbole.

This story was really helpful in my own current situation.

It was so nice to hear things from so many people’s perspective, told in a story. It really helped me to see the parallels in my own relationships and recent break up. I was involved with a narcissist, and in the past, I never knew what the traits and gameplay was all about. But after reading several books, things became clear. This was kind of like a wrapup of all the new understandings I have gained. i’m extremely grateful for this book, and how it was laid out. Thank you so much!

loved it

all the negativity in the comments is just wow! people are so closed minded and harsh. just cause the book isn't right for you doesn't mean it's a "bad* book. I can tell you right now I wouldn't want to date any of you guys! also who cares what they sound like, deal with it, it's not about how it's sounds, it's the information that matters.

I really liked this book. helped me view things from a different perspective, something some of you guys should really consider looking into considering your poor irrelevant judgment. js

Babbling Rambling Boring

I don't know where all the good quotes on Instagram are coming from, but after slogging through 30 minutes of this mess I'm already checking out. Save yourself the money and the trouble.

Honest portrayal of relationships and breakups

enjoyable and interesting ,from different perspectives, this book explains the varying emotions that come in waves after a break up, and that the relationship we have with ourselves is the bench mark for how others treat us.

Not that profound

Getting this book I thought there would be more profoundness and depth. This is just some regular persons perception of dating in the ”modern” world. Nothing in it felt new or gave me any fresh insights to dating and WHY things are as they are… This book probably came to be over a nights discussion about dating and a few bottles of beer, not very polished.

Absolutely awful

I have listened to one and a half chapters and just cannot continue ... it is absolutely painful listening.
I had read so many good reviews about this book, I can only imagine they were written by a year 7 group for their book review homework. it's absolute rubbish ... what a total waste of an audible credit.

Cliché

Characters and situations are massive clichés.
I laughed, I’m not sure it’s meant to be a comedy.

The narrator doesn't help the book.

I feel so disappointed. Was looking forward to this for a long time. The voice just doesn't match the book

Tedious!

This book has been significantly exaggerated! It offers nothing new in terms of the subject of contempory dating and was written as though it is a teenagers diary.
The narrators monotone voice, does nothing to lift this book and there is nothing to take away from it. It jumps around from storytelling to reflection and is based solely in the authors opinion with not even a nod at any human psychology. Do not waste your money.

Modern break up is brilliant right from the start

An audio book only works when you have a good narrator who tells the story has a good reading voice and it just flows

I came across this book on IG and after a bad break up from a long term relationship with a narcissist this book came at a right time for me

Thank you

Ah relationships

This isn't a 5 star thriller nor is it a 50 shades although most red blooded males would be turned on by reading the sex scene, and most women might say " thats never happened to me" and be liars..either way an enjoyable listen into 21st century relationships.

Disappointed

Downloaded this audio book as the Instagram marketing showcased an insightful book about relationships and the challenges of interpersonal relationships. I was so disappointed. There is minimal correlation. The book is a terrible version of a person struggling with love. Retold in annoying voices that have no emotional connection with an audience. The first audiobook I could not finish.

not worth purchasing.

Had many great reviews so gave it a try. Was disappointed. If over the age of 22, I do not recommend. Might be better suited to teen or young adult going through their first ever break up.

It’s just a girl whinging - nothing helpful

Really disappointed with this book. It’s just a girl whining about the drama she’s having with a guy - I can listen to myself whinge about my love life, I don’t need to pay for a book to do it.
Got nothing helpful from this book.

didn't even get 1/2 way before leaving it. just dribble may be good for an 18 year old, just a woman talking about her day really and way to much about social media

I was expecting so much more I bought it for the quotes, but that was the best part.

Some really great content

I really enjoyed the discussion on modern day dating and the characters were quite interesting. I did feel some bits were a little corny but I think it's a hard subject matter to discuss without a bit of that arising here and there. I don't know why we had to hear from the ex at the end, it seemed unnecessary and out of place, but overall I'm glad I took the time with this.

Time and brain cells i won't get back!

Even with it sped up to 2x it was still to much time invested. The only reason i even listened to as much as I did was as i was driving and couldn't select another book.... Classic case of only listened to half but will mark as finished to take it out of my list.
Would be better to sit in a coffee shop and eves dropped listening in on conversations as they discuss and repeat the story several times in a conversation on what happened and why with no self responsibility.
