Publisher's Summary

Geology is often thought of as simply the study of rocks. In reality, geology is the study of our planet on all scales, from microscopic to planet-wide, and ranging in time from almost instantaneous events, like earthquakes, to the glacially slow motion of the tectonic plates. Everything we know about our world from a geologic perspective is based on information locked into the rock record and the job of a geologist is to tease out that story through a wide variety of observations. This insightful course explores a range of topics that help to tell the story of Earth and to explain the discipline of Geology and the role of the geologist.

Individual lectures explore subjects such as minerals, the three different rock types and how they relate through the rock cycle, as well as how the interior of the earth is divided and the processes that occur there. Further lectures explore geologic time and how we sort out the history of any given sequence of rocks, how rocks deform and how plate tectonics works, and many processes related to surface water and groundwater. Geology has grown to become a very broad field with numerous areas of specialization, but this course provides a substantial overview of some of the most important features and processes that affect us as we interact with our planet and as it interacts with us.

interesting, informative and well presented.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get a good grounding in the basic concepts of geology in a well paced and well presented format. Ms Zeigler covers the basic rock types as well as elements, minerals and chemistry, including the processes involved in tectonics, feature formations etc. I particularly enjoyed the venture deep into the planet's different layers and was quite impressed with the inner workings of of the mantle and core, and how the cooling and heating of magma at different layers contributes to the earth's magnetic field. There was even an interesting discussion about sand - yes sand. As well as rivers, volcanoes, caves and so forth.
BTW I also enjoyed Ms. Zeigler's presentation style and would definitely consider any other presentations she is involved in.

For a basic understanding of geology

What did you love best about The Modern Scholar: Geology?

Very well read and written. Easy to understand, repeat the most important concepts and make sure the listener is comprehending the text.

Any additional comments?

For a begginer in geology (I am a mechanical engineer) it is a perfect companion for studying while driving, commuting or just walking.

Great for Intro or Exam Review

I'm brushing up on subjects for a comprehensive exam and this lecture served as a great refresher course. Explaining geological concepts can be tough but Dr. Ziegler did a great job!!

Very informative and easy to listen to.

My kids are interested in rocks. So, I get lots of questions like “Daddy, what is this rock?” Something in the range 323 times every day. Not being a geologist, I have no clue and my kids are starting to think I am really dumb and don’t know anything. So, now I need to study up on rocks. Professor Zeigler did a great job with this course. She spoke well during narration. I learned a lot. I like the way she talks and the words she uses (ie. Critter. :) ). Many of her descriptions and analogies are very entertaining. If you have an interest in geology, this course is for you. Now that the weather is warm and the insects are out, I’m being asked to identify every bug we come across. I hope they have a course about bugs......

A total rip-off

What disappointed you about The Modern Scholar: Geology?

This is a ridiculously priced audio book. THERE IS LESS THAN 5 HOURS OF CONTENT! I've purchased all sorts of academic and professional literature through Audible and every singe one came with at least ten hours of content.

What was most disappointing about Professor Kate Zeigler’s story?

The first 45 minutes start with a droll recitation of Zeigler's credentials followed by the author explaining the most rudimentary facts of geology which I learned back in middle school.

Would you be willing to try another one of Professor Kate Zeigler’s performances?

No. Not for $50.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Modern Scholar: Geology?

Cutting content is hardly the problem. Geology is such a vast field a true academic should have no problem delivering triple the content for the money.

Any additional comments?

Zeigler and Audible have profoundly disappointed me.

Great Overview of Our Earth

Ms. Zeigler makes a complex (for me) subject understandable. Her examples are easy to follow and illustrative of the point. Her narrative is clear, precise, and pleasant to listen to. She obviously knows and loves her life's work.

Geology made easy (too?)

A super-simple introduction to geology. Almost too simple to be interesting. Presented at a level that is probably appropriate for elelementary school or maybe middle school.

Superb

I'm very happy with this. The content and organization and presentation are superb. I highly recommend it for people like me who want a basic understanding of the most important aspects of geology. I was skeptical that an audio book would work well, but it does.

An Excellent Book

I am an energy engineer and an environmentalist, I wanted to learn more about geology but without having to wade through a mixture of books that were below my level of understanding or too voluminous and difficult for me to read in a sensible period of time. This audio book fulfilled my expectations, some of the concepts need a little more attention and need going over several times. Really well done Prof Zeigler, I am now looking forward to studying geology in more depth.

Engaging

One of few audiobooks that I have finished. Just the right amount of information, not too heavy and the speaker is easy to listen to.

Geology basics - all delivered enthusiastically

Did short courses on basic geology a few years ago. This brought it all back and more. Wish I'd had these lectures then. I really like the knowledgeable and very enthusiastic delivery style of this set of lectures.
