Publisher's Summary

The Mom Test is a quick, practical guide that will save you time, money, and heartbreak.

They say you shouldn't ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn't ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It's a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it's not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It's your responsibility to find it, and it's worth doing right.

Talking to customers is one of the foundational skills of both customer development and lean startup. We all know we're supposed to do it, but nobody seems willing to admit that it's easy to screw up and hard to do right. This book is going to show you how customer conversations go wrong, and how you can do better.

Informative and useful for all entrepreneurs!

I wish I learned these techniques years ago when I was first doing customer discovery meetings. Rob truly simplified the process of how to do customer conversations in an easy and efficient manner. Highly recommend this book!

Eye opener

This is the type of book that is 100% practical and that can save you a lot of time. I'm hindsight the recommendations are obvious but is so easy to get caught up in other things that you forget about the essentials. if you are about to build or building a startup just listen to it.

Great audiobook

Great little audiobook. What impressed me was the way the narrator (also being the author of the book), is able to apply a personal touch. Rob often breaks out of the role of narrating his book to actually talk to you, as if he is giving a tech talk and not just reading you a book - and I loved that.

Now all there is for me to do is try applying the tips given in this book. As a programmer with SaaS side projects, I don’t expect this to magically change everything. However, I’m certainly going to rethink how I engage with customers in both my own and commercial related projects.

Thanks, Rob!

Very basic sales book

The author tries to make this a more practical book but all could be summarised in a blog post.

The points are typical sales tips and does not add much value to someone who know a bit about talking to customers. Essentially you need to ask the right questions to get a useful and non patronising response. There's not magic or a super creative idea that I didn't know in this book.

Although the author says it is for someone like him who did not talk to customers at all so you may find it useful but don't expect a lot.

Awesome

Great book, great advice for talking to people in business terms even if it's not in a start-up setting. The narration is great - maybe even better than reading it because it's read by the author so it feels like a talk/podcast rather than a book. Definitely recommend

I wish I read this book a few years ago

This books made me cringe at least a dozens of times. Reading the book was like reading an autobiography. I have done many of the mistakes that the book mentions.

On the surface, it seems that it is about talking to customers and extracting insights that are credible. But once you dig deeper you realize the book is about strategy, validation, thinking clearly and creatively, ego traps, and how to not fall for false positives that can have detrimental effects on you and your startup.

It also provides many practical bits of advice and hacks to find customers and run the customer interview process. I truly wish I had read the book a few years ago.

Easy listening with tons of great info

Rob was super easy to listen to. As a first time entrepreneur, I laughed so many times, after hearing Rob explaining what types of questions I should NOT be asking. I.e. I have been asking all the compliment-seeking types, instead of ones which meet "the mom test". Cheers man

straight to the point

no BS
actionable plans to get through the fluff. sometimes it even seems too simple yet this is not an area that is often talked about in startups and that is probably why so many get it wrong.
