The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Infinite Worlds is the most popular VRMMORPG on the market. Its maps are so vast, developer Hard Rock Data utilizes a network of highly advanced artificial intelligences to control it. But it’s not without problems. That’s why Game Masters like Jeff Driscoll have jobs. The downside? He’s not allowed to play the game. Something about conflicts of interest and favoritism. His very boring and tedious job is to help players deal with the occasional bug that slips through the cracks and ensure they enjoy their time playing enough to give a five-star rating.

Publisher's Summary
Are monsters born, or do bad actors take shattered people and shape them like putty, molding them into unrecognizable shapes?
The Otherworld. Made up of Dayside and Nightside and separated by the Twilit Boundary, the Otherworld is a plane of existence lost from time, bursting with magic and vibrant life.
Kal floats on the verge of life and death, struggling to find a reason to keep on living. In an odd turn of events, Kal's sylph familiar, Bell, may care more about keeping him alive than he does. Bell makes a deal with the merfolk on Kal's behalf to save him from a fatal wound, but in doing so the wily fishes curse him to do their bidding.
To avoid his being killed outright by either the faery king Oberon, or Bell's possessive father, Lord Eurius, Bell urges Kal to create his own legitimacy by leveraging faery politics for his own ends. At the pagan festival of Samhain, the last harvest, Bell pushes Kal to declare himself a champion.
More than a hundred champions galavant across the Otherworld in search of a kingly title shrouded in mystery and dark deceit, the mantle of the Seven Year King.
Kal will undergo his own crucible along his path of thorns. Tests, trials, and tribulations will force him to wrestle with his nature and face himself fully, warts and all. If he survives, Kal will emerge clothed in legitimacy and empowered to pursue his own ends.

Dark and Dangerous
"The Monster's in the Details" picks up from the cliff hanger ending of the first book in the Gaslamp Faeries series. Saved from the mortal wound to his human body by a bargain Bell made with the Merfolk, Kal is recuperating in the Otherworld. For Kal to gain legitimacy in the Fae world, Bell insists that Kal compete for the crown as the Seven Year King. On a path of thorns, Kal is forged into a new self. Great action, imaginative world building and interesting magic make a fun tale.
Greg Patmore's character interpretation and narration make this especially enjoyable.

Baskerville Book Reviews
This review is from the perspective of somebody who hasn’t read book 1. So I can’t review it as a follow-up experience.
Despite my lack of context, I had no real issues following along. The characters occasionally reference events of the past, but for the most part, it’s easy enough to follow along and get an idea of what they’re referring to.
While I very much enjoyed both protagonists, Bell was the star of the show for me. She’s endearing, funny, loyal, and even jealous. I was often laughing at her dialogue or the interactions between her and Kal, she’s a wonderful character.
I did enjoy the story as a whole, but it’s nothing to write home about. The vocabulary is on-par with other fantasy novels but the story itself is just a generic protagonist that always comes out on top story. As I said above, it’s the characters and their interactions that did it for me. For the most part, it felt like I was listening to a young adult novel. The occasional swearing or bloody combat scenes threw me for a loop though. I’m not sure what the intended age range is. Though I’m admittedly not overly familiar with YA novels, so for all I know that could be the norm.
I have very little to add about the narrator and the narration. The narrator was fantastic. The audio was free of any repeated dialogue or other common Audible hiccups.
NOTE: This copy was provided to me free of charge as a digital review copy. The opinions stated in this review are mine and mine alone, I was not paid or requested to give this book a certain rating, suggestion, or approval.

What a great story
I have to say I love this series. Kal and his sylph Bell are a hilarious pair. Bell's snarky banter & Kals witty responses are a riot. Kal has to try avoiding being killed by the fairy King Oberon & Bells farther Lord Eurius. Bell had made a deal with the merfolk on kals behalf to save him from a mortal wound. Then Bell convinced Kal to declare himself a champion and enter the tournament of The Seven Year King. The wild journey through the tournament will keep you turning pages. This author does an excellent job with the characters & world building. I can't wait for the next book.

New Adventure In The Otherworld
The Monster's In The Details is Book 2 in the Gaslamp Faeries series by Ren Ryder. This is a well written adventure with great characters. We find that Kal is human and fae. The relationship between Kal and Bell, his wind sylph familiar is developing nicely as Bell is much more concerned about Kal's welfare than in Book 1. Bell is still her sassy cheerful annoying self and is determined to get Kal to move on from the life and death state he is currently in. The detail in this book allows a fantastic world to develop in your mind as you read. I love this book and series and highly recommend it. Greg Patmore, the narrator, excellently brings the characters to life so that the story becomes vividly alive in your mind.

So Much Fun!
I received an audio version of this book to review. All opinions are my own.
This second book in the Gaslamp Faeries is entertaining as the first. The beginning got off to a rough start (I imagine the written version might be smoother with the repetition). But then I was drawn into the story. You know things are going to go down when Oberon the Faery King appears. During Samhain, Kal must stake his place as a champion and participate in a variety of trials for the title of the Seven Year King.
Ren Ryder has created an empathetic character and the narration is engaging. I look forward to the third book.

The monstr's in the details
Excellent fantasy tale where if they think you are dead, silphs will eat you.Luckily it was just a nip. There are SO many fae in this book,it was hard to keep track! So this half fae,who thinks he is a human is on a quest and I really lost track as to what he was looking for, something about being king for 7 years.I believe he finds 'his destiny'.Maybe not, that could be in the next book! Greg Patmore was an excellent narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'

Brilliant Simply brilliant
Really loved this Brilliant story, following on from book 1 this book is set totally in the fairy realm, it follows Kal and Bells adventures as they enter a contest to become the Seven year King and have to complete various quests in both the Dark and Wild woods, encountering many creatures of myth and legend. This is a wonderful story full of magic and danger, struggle and friendship, treachery and intrigue and told with great style and joy. I continue to love the characters especially Bell who continues to have the best lines. Greg Patmore is a superb narrator who gives each character and unique personality and voice. If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. I received a complimentary copy from Storyorigin and am leaving an honest voluntary review

Unique and complicated story
I wasn't a fan of the first book in this series. I thought it lacked continuity, explanations, and world-building. (When I read it, the first book failed to indicate it was the first in a series and that there would be a continuation, so I was also frustrated by being left with a ton of questions that I didn't think would be answered.) Still, I grabbed this 2nd book, because my interest was captured by Kal, Sammie, and Bell, even if I didn't understand everything that was going on in Book I, and I really wanted to see how things concluded and if my questions would be answered.
The second book is better than the first IMO. I was still confused sometimes, but at least now I know there is more to come, so I'm not so frustrated. One thing I will say is that the scenic imagery is spectacular; it made me feel like I could see places in my mind. I always appreciate that. Kal continues to struggle with himself and who he is, and he faces numerous trials and challenges. Bell continues to get Kal into trouble, but she helps get him back out as well, and she seemed nicer and less selfish in this book. They seem to be on the same team more than in Book I. There are dark times in this read, but enough snark and humor to keep it from being too heavy. Overall, this is a unique and complicated world, and I really encourage reading both the first and second books together so you have a better picture.
The narration for the audiobook is fantastic! So many great voices. Excellent pacing and delivery. Great expression of emotion.

The world building is fantastic in this series! The description of the beings and the Otherworld is, indeed, very detailed. The lead character finds himself in precarious situations at every turn and wonders why. As he learns the startling truth, it explains so very many of the why's. A fascinating read as well as an inspiration to keep moving forward no matter how grim things appear to be - a lesson the entire world seems to be learning in real life right now.
Fantastic narration! The narrator has mad skills!

Really great story with amazing characters!
I love all the little quirks that the characters have, there’s such a massive variation to keep things interesting and put a smile on your face and it’s filled to the brim with action and magic.
I remember really enjoying the first book but I don’t remember much from it (I have memory issues!) and I think I would have benefitted from having my memory jogged a little more, although it’s still an amazing listen in its own right!
Greg tells this story really well. He has great pacing, character voices (Bell’s is my favourite as it really brings out her character!) and manages to portray the atmosphere and peril of situations really well!
Definitely worth a listen and I really hope there’s another soon!
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.
