Story
How do you feel about setting goals? I’ve heard people say they feel energized, depressed, confused, terrified, pumped, ambivalent, lost...or all of the above. Here’s what I’ve realized: Our relationship to success is inside-out. When we make our New Year’s resolutions, bucket lists, big plans, or weekly to-dos, we’re hoping that when we "arrive" we’ll be fulfilled. Our hearts will swell as we cross the finish line, and then we can finally relax and savor our happiness. Except more often than not, that doesn’t happen....

But what do "healthy boundaries" really mean - and how can we successfully express our needs, say "no", and be assertive without offending others? Licensed counselor, sought-after relationship expert, and one of the most influential therapists on Instagram Nedra Glover Tawwab demystifies this complex topic for today's world.

When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Good book - just not a good one for Audible

Publisher's Summary
Coexisting but conflicting needs create self-sabotaging behaviors. This is why we resist efforts to change, often until they feel completely futile. But by extracting crucial insight from our most damaging habits, building emotional intelligence by better understanding our brains and bodies, releasing past experiences at a cellular level, and learning to act as our highest potential future selves, we can step out of our own way and into our potential.
For centuries, the mountain has been used as a metaphor for the big challenges we face, especially ones that seem impossible to overcome. To scale our mountains, we actually have to do the deep internal work of excavating trauma, building resilience, and adjusting how we show up for the climb. In the end, it is not the mountain we master, but ourselves.

Underwelming
I wanted this to live up to the hype, but it did not.
Perhaps this would be helpful for someone new to “self development”, but for me it read like a lot of stating the obvious. Most of the points made in this book are paraphrased themes of best selling self help books, and at worst a bunch of Pinterest quotes pushed together.
The tone is dogmatic “you must do this” or “you cannot do that” with very little science or data to back up claims. Disappointing and overhyped, and I did not enjoy the narrator’s cheesy and sing songy performance.

Fell Short
I quickly picked this book up after seeing almost everyone talking about it with high praises. It ended up being unexpectedly repetitive, and at many times felt more like a positive affirmations track than an actual book. The messages were nice, but offered much less science-backed examples than other similar books, and most of the 'tactics' given were very metaphorical; you'll 'know it's working' because you can 'feel your inner child' and stuff like that. When it comes to exercises, it's not much help to the emotionally congested to just tell us you're certain we'll see certain deep mental montages and just 'feel' when it's correct. Probably a good starter book, but didn't have enough substance for me.

Uncovering Our Mountains
Brianna Wiest does a phenomenal job with helping her readers see the deeper rooted things in our lives that we need to focus on to achieve the healing we are all searching for in life. We often think we know the true problems in our lives that we need to fix so that we can have a better life but after reading this book I realized that most of us are just treating the symptoms and not the actual core problem. If you’ve been dealing with self sabotage in your life I highly recommend this book. It helped me uncover things I’ve been working years to uncover by simply getting me to realize the symptoms are the area we need to be focusing on.

Why is it so hyped up?
The only reason I can think of why this book is overly hyped is lack of basic life experiences. Because if you’re over 20 it is generally a universal experience to go through the things the author describes in the book and find your own unique way to deal with it.
Apart from that, my previous book on Audible was the Atomic Habits. The fist half of the Mountain is You is an oversimplified version of Atomic Habits word for word with no research or supporting materials. If that’s not bad enough, I can clearly hear her mixing the book the Vortex by Abraham Hicks into her writing, which should be identified as a teaching school if it’s used.
This book is a pure, undiluted “motivational speaker” book, in the worst sense. I could barely finish it also because of the annoyance that the voice caused (but I can never just put a book down after starting). The narrator tries too hard to be “joyous” and it shows.
2 stars because some beginners on the topic might be inspired to read more on it.

insights and tools
this book was recommended to me for a very long time, reading it on audio was the best solution I felt like she was talking to me and not only did she illustrate ways of self-sabotage she gave tools for the alternative. As someone with anxiety, low self-compassion with a tendency to fixate on the future and the things I need to fix...this was a healing balm and push.

Brilliant
I thought this book was brilliant. I recommend it to anyone who struggles with their thoughts, choices etc. I find that many books with helpful mindset tips want to be a large book so they fill it up with repeats that don’t offer more guidance but this isn’t true for this book. I felt like every time I listened, I either learned something new or it gave me a different perspective on something I hadn’t considered. Looking forward to reading more from Brianna Wiest.

I was struggling between identifying if it’s my ego being triggered or human in daily challenges . This is well explained in chapter 3 . Core needs must be met or they start screaming🙏 it really helped me to realise that I can not change what’s integrated in me but I can help myself in finding ways to fulfil those core needs and accept for who I am.
Love every word of this book and bought several copies to gift to my loved ones.

An amazing book which seemed to speak to my innermost thoughts...it is very eye opening, knowledgeable and helpful and delves into the heart of self sanotage and self mastery. A book well worth listening to if you have any sense you are self sabotaging or are just looking to improve your life - lots of helpful and practical ideas and comments (sometimes 'duh!' moments when you realise you should already be doing them) on things you can do to bring peace and boundaries into your life. Life changing!
Wow, I’ve never had a book speak to me so much. It was like it was written for me as I traverse a really challenging life situation. Beautifully and honestly written and narrated perfectly. Cannot recommend enough!

Written with me in mind
I love this book. It covered and spoke directly to me. I am listening to it for the second or third time in less than 2weeks. I recommend it to any one who want to improve in any area of life. The lessons are very generic and yet specific to the individual (me). I will give it 11 stars out of 10 if I am allowed. The lessons are great, the tone is relaxing and psychological calming yet full of triggers to encourage one to take action in the right direction. Thanks Brianna and Stacey.

Brilliantly Written
Brianna does a phenomenal job of breaking down the triggers and what we are to do to stop self sabotaging behaviour.
For me, the greatest thing was knowing that everyone has a ceiling of happiness, and we’ll push back on that subconsciously.
Brilliant insights all round.
