Publisher's Summary

From New York Times best-selling author of Lilac Girls Martha Hall Kelly and coauthor Kathy Murray comes a novella based on Murray's true underdog story, following her time coaching a German cheerleading squad and ultimately inspiring a group of young women to reach new heights in their sport.

It’s 1997, and Kathy Murray, desperate to leave her medical sales job and pursue her passion, accepts an offer to teach aerobics in Germany - as a former elite athlete, she’s confident she can handle whatever comes her way. She quickly realizes, though, that her leap of faith may be more challenging than she thought, struggling with the German language and the overt racism she constantly faces as one of the only Black people in her new community. But that doesn’t stop her from taking on her biggest challenge yet: coaching a cheerleading squad of disengaged teenagers with only weeks to prepare for their championship competition.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Annika Jensen is a gifted gymnast, but when she arrives in Munich, she’s still haunted by the troubling memories of her previous cheer squad and has no interest in revisiting the sport. Can the Munich Cowboys Cheerleaders and their fearless new coach reignite Annika’s passion and rebuild her confidence?

Told from Kathy and Annika’s perspectives, The Munich Cowboys Cheerleaders is an uplifting story of friendship and conviction in the face of adversity.

Sweet & Inspiring

What a lovely story about overcoming the obstacles that life puts in your path.

At first I wasn't going to read this novella because it was about cheerleaders and in the past I've had a bit of a prejudice against these women... (Shades of HS trauma I suppose, lol). But, putting my preconceived opinions aside, I found a heartening true story told by 2 talented women.

Loved it!

I wanted to read this because I was fortunate to have Kathy as my personal trainer when I lived in Atlanta. I knew she was a special person, but I didn’t know the story about her days in Germany. It’s truly an inspiring story and well worth the listen.

A heartwarming and real story

I appreciated the glimpse into the struggle of cheerleaders: equipment and safety needs; stereotypes and petty teenage drama; the need for strength and conditioning for all athletes.
I also very much appreciate how Kathy share’s her story and experience as an American woman of color, in a foreign country (and the US)and the struggles she faced-with grace. Like the author’s say in the final credits, these are lessons not only for cheer and sports but for living life every day as well.

A quick and motivational story

A story of friendship, overcoming the odds and lightly peppered with overt racism. Hard to believe as recently as 1997 a black cheerleading coach in Germany would have nothing but uphill battles to get her and her team into the spotlight and on to victory. Picked up this free listen because of the 2.5 hour time slot I needed to fill and it was perfect; entertaining to the end.
