Publisher's Summary

A summer house party turns into a thrilling whodunit when Jane Austen's Mr. Wickham—one of literature’s most notorious villains—meets a sudden and suspicious end in this brilliantly imagined mystery featuring Austen’s leading literary characters.

The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a party at their country estate, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.

Nearly everyone at the house party is a suspect, so it falls to the party’s two youngest guests to solve the mystery: Juliet Tilney, the smart and resourceful daughter of Catherine and Henry, eager for adventure beyond Northanger Abbey; and Jonathan Darcy, the Darcys’ eldest son, whose adherence to propriety makes his father seem almost relaxed.

In this tantalizing fusion of Austen and Christie, from New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray, the unlikely pair must put aside their own poor first impressions and uncover the guilty party—before an innocent person is sentenced to hang.

Better than I could’ve hoped

Claudia Gray has never disappointed and she continues that trend with this book. Fantastic story with a mix of familiar and new characters. Does little to break away from the conventions of murder mysteries but that’s hardly a bad thing. Honestly the idea to create a whodunit with Jane Austen characters is ingenious and I can’t believe it hasn’t been done before.

Jane Austen Lives!

Author Claudia Gray has not only written an intriguing murder mystery, but has brought Jane Austen back to life. The phrasing, vocabulary, and attention to detail makes the reader feel she has happened upon a previously unknown Austen story. The amount and depth of research the author has done to be sure the book authentically comes across as one written in the Regency period pays off. The author’s skill and the narrator’s voice accurately capture Jane Austen and result in a delightful book.

I think Jane Austen would approve

Is there any higher compliment to a writer than to inspire other writers to pick up their mantle? Claudia Gray does a great job of carrying on in the Austen tradition and it was good to linger awhile in this reimagined world. I especially appreciated the tender attentions the author paid to the neuro-divergent aspects of Elizabeth and FitzWilliam’s son, Jonathan. Narrator Billie Fulford-Brown was perfect for the task of bringing the characters to life. I was excessively diverted by this book.

Not my cup of tea

I thought this was a slow and a bit boring book. I could not wait to get it done with. The only reason I finished it was a friend and I read a book and discuss it. It finally picked up the pace in the last couple of chapters. Predictable ending.

Good one to listen to after the Jane Austen novels

I listened to this after 3 Jane Austen novels. one difference I noted was that unlike the Jane Austen versions in audible where each character separate people's voices, this was all by a single person changing voices accordingly. Took a little getting used to in the beginning but enjoyed it very much.

Awesome!

This is the first Jane Austen spin off/sequel that I really enjoyed! In my opinion she did something with this novel I haven't seen any other sequels pull off: which was to really stay true to what Austen's heros where like in their original stories and realistically portray how they would have progressed and how they would have interacted! I haven't seen anyone else do better and that is coming from an Austen adaptation fanatic.

Very enjoyable

When I saw this book, I knew I had to listen to it now! The book starts off a little slow and just gets better. Some of my favorite Jane Austen characters all in the one book…. I love it!

Jane Austen + WhoDunnit

I enjoyed Billie Fulford-Brown's narration of this book by Claudia Gray. I enjoyed the portrayals of the characters that I know and love , even if I didn't always envision them in the same way,
(and their ages didn't necessarily coincide with what their ages might be). Brown made each character remarkably different and I was very invested in the story, and actually surprised by the outcome.

An interesting look at our favorite characters

I got this because I love a good murder mystery and Jane Austen, so it seemed like a fun premise. But I stayed for the really interesting character exploration through the lens of how each of Austen’s “happy ending” couples might have fared when those relationships were put to the test. I didn’t always agree with the author’s decisions, but it was such a unique and interesting way to approach a continuation of the stories and characters we all love. Would recommend!

Agatha Austen

A bestselling Star Wars fiction author writes a Christie/Austen mash up, it shouldn't work but it does. Gray throws in practically every Austen character you can think of and it's a delight to meet them all once more. If your a fan of Jane and can take the premise you are in for a treat. Not as worthy as Death Comes to Pemberley but far more entertaining in my opinion. I do hope there will be a sequel. Brilliant.

Justice

How I enjoyed this book. The plot was intriguing, characters like old friends and the language and style of the author did justice to the writings of Jane Austen. There was one familiar villain and many heroes in this compelling story. Now I want to read all Jane Austen’s novels again. Well done and more please!!

good light-hearted listen

To meet again Austen's characters in a Christy-esque house party murder mystery was a brilliant crossing of genres.
The narration was very well done.
However, an inconsistency in chapter numeration led to a small irritation. This is something quite common in audible books, where the introduction etc classed as Chapter 1 and the Chapter list is not amended. Hence I listened to a large chunk twice as I tried to find my place over several devices.

Awesome read

I loved this, Claudia Gray and Billie Fulford-Brown did a wonderful job. I'm always a bit worried when an author attempts to write like Jane Austen. But she really captures the language. It read like it could have been written by Jane. I hope Claudia will write more like this, maybe even attempt her unfinished novels.
Also would love if audible would get the rights to Defy the Stars trilogy by this author. Would be instant buys for me.

Great book

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was well written and performed. Having a blending of all Jane Austen's books was fun and I loved John D'arcy's quirks.
