Story
The relationship duo between borderlines and narcissists tends to be more common than we think. There is no true way to get a good picture of how many relationships span this dynamic, as many borderlines and narcissists go undiagnosed or undetected. Most narcissists don't have the intuition, knowledge of their condition, or interest in their inner world to pursue why they are the way they are. It is unlikely that they would seek treatment because of their overinflated egos...

Story
People with borderline or narcissistic personality disorders have a serious mental illness that primarily affects their intimate, personal, and family relationships. Often they appear to be normally functioning at work and in public interactions, and narcissists may even be highly effective, in the short term, in some work or social situations. However, in intimate relationships, they can be emotional, aggressive, demeaning, illogical, paranoid, accusing, and controlling - in the extreme.

Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

The first love in our lives is our mother. Recognizing her face, her voice, the meaning of her moods, and her facial expressions is crucial to survival. In this book, Dr. Christine Ann Lawson vividly describes how mothers who suffer from borderline personality disorder produce children who may flounder in life even as adults, futilely struggling to reach the safety of a parental harbor, unable to recognize that their borderline parent lacks a pier, or even a discernible shore.

Publisher's Summary
Excerpt:
"You might wonder what makes me qualified to write about these topics. I will share with you that I have first-hand life experience in all of the topics that I write about. Unlike a mental health professional, I have lived and breathed many of the difficulties that you are going through now. I have largely overcome childhood trauma, persevered, and found the peaceful place that I am in today. I have researched the topics that I write about for nearly three decades. I can provide a good amount of wisdom to you, so you don't have to search high and low for all of the answers. Let's dig in.
Ever since the DSM scale to differentiate personality disordered individuals was created, there have likely been relationships between men and women who have narcissistic personality-disordered and borderline personality-disordered personalities. It might seem that this dynamic duo shouldn't last, or shouldn't get together at all, but there is a lot of evidence that these relationships can and do work for a number of couples, who are quite happy in their unions.
The reasons this duo initially comes together can be quite interesting."

Definitions:
BPD - Borderline Personality Disorder
NPD - Narcissist Personality Disorder
This audiobook delves into the phenomenon of "Borderline Personality Disordered women and the Narcissistic Personality Disordered men who date or marry them."
What causes BPD?
"The female likely lived in an emotionally invalidating environment. She was born with a sensitive temperament and subsequently grew up in an environment where her parent was largely self-absorbed."
If a child grows up feeling that their needs are not important, it can result in the child having BPD.
What causes NPD?
If a child grows up feeling that he is the center of his/her parent's world and can do no wrong, and is put on a pedestal by his/her parents, this type of childhood trauma may result in NPD.
According to the author, she "...has first hand life experience in all of the topics that [she writes] about." She says that "... unlike a mental health professional, [she has] lived and breathed many of the difficulties that [sufferers of these disorders] are going through now. [She has] largely overcome childhood traumas. Persevered and found the peaceful place that [she] is in today." She has researched these topics for thirty years.
This audiobook is similar to another audiobook I listened to in the same genre. According to author J.B. Snow, every problem men and women have can be traced back to their childhood and how they were treated by their parents.
While I do believe that a traumatic childhood will obviously adversely affect a person's life, I also believe that some people use their upbringing as an excuse for their own poor behavior when they did not have especially difficult childhoods. I guess I am a bit of a cynic. I think people need to "man up" and take responsibility for their own behavior.
However audiobooks like this one do offer some great advice on relationships. I just don't think that advice is limited specifically to people with NPD and/or BPD. For example, the author states that when couples are dealing with their in-laws, they need to be on the same page and present a united front. This applies to every marriage.
The narrator, D. Gaunt does a terrific job with difficult subject matter.
This audiobook is extremely short (only nineteen minutes long) which I believe limits the amount of knowledge that is gained. Listeners do not get enough detailed information or enough tips on coping mechanisms for this audiobook to be truly effective. It is for that reason that I rate this audiobook as 3 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐

Short
I was hoping for a longer book. I didn't look at how many pages when I purchased it so I am the one at blame. overall I learned some things. I did like the narratives voice. Didn't sound to much like a robot 😊
