Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Following the success of Rees's best-selling Auschwitz, this substantially revised and updated edition of The Nazis - A Warning from History tells the powerfully gripping story of the rise and fall of the Third Reich.

During a 16-year period, acclaimed author and documentary-maker Laurence Rees met and interviewed a large number of former Nazis, and his unique insights into the Nazi psyche and World War II received enormous praise.

At the heart of the book lie compelling eyewitness accounts of life under Adolf Hitler, spoken through the words of those who experienced the Nazi regime at every level of society. An extensive new section on the Nazi/Soviet war (previously published in Rees' War of the Century) provides a chilling insight into Nazi mentality during the most bloody conflict in history.

Described as one of the greatest documentary series of all times The Nazis - A Warning from History won a host of awards, including a BAFTA and an International Documentary Award.

HOW TO STEAL A COUNTRY

A book that really presents how the Nazis came to power and what can happen when an entire nation finds a new God. An excellent study of both Hitler. and Stalin and the dangers of the personality cult. Superbly detailed and a grand presentation. Everybody should read or listen. unfortunately too few will.

More understanding

I’ve listened to many books about the Nazi regime, so not surprised by this one. Did not bring nothing really new, but it was well done.

A terrible tale that is masterfully related…

As a student of history and a person who is intrigued by the idea of the “cult of personality” I chose this book to dive again into the events and choices that saw rise of the fascists in Germany during the 1930’s.
The result of reading this book is that I can see now, more than ever, how diabolic key figures in the Nazi party were able to enact their will and enforce a reign of terror that was perpetrated against both the Jews and other perceived enemies of the Aryan way of life.
If you are looking to continue your education of this period or are a person diving for the first time into this terrible subject, this book will serve you well. I pray that everyone has a chance to read this at some early point in their life, because to forget or down play the horror of the Nazi regime is to repeat it.

Very good, but why no pictures??

There’s some new things in this book. Like interviews with mass murderers. Some of the content is very graphic.
The Narrator is very good.

But again; why can’t Audible include a pdf file with pictures? It can’t be very difficult. We get half a book.

Good listen.

Very good listen. It’s difficult to speak about the Nazis without becoming a narrative of WW2 and that does happen. A few areas that are not covered are the ‘strength through joy’ holidays and cruises, and the 1936 olympics are only touched on.

Powerful

This was a book I stayed with until the end. Powerful narration and terrifying graphic descriptions of war and cruelty. Worth buying this book. Laurence Rees is a first rate author and historian.

A warning from history

The book is a companion piece to the BBC documentary series of the same name which covers the rise, decline, and fall of the Nazis and Adolf Hitler.

An overview of every cruel act carried out by the Nazi regime before and during WWII through the use of interviews of eyewitnesses and the perpetrators themselves.

The narration is great and very apt for such an important historical account of the time.

An important reminder of how easily the mob is mobilised

Should be mandatory learning for all school children and tied into the current manipulation of the media in nationalist direction.

Excellent

This book gave me an amazing insight to the motivation behind the actions of Nazi Germany prior to and during WWII.

Highly recommended.
