Publisher's Summary

Engaging, incisive and acute, The New Puritans is a deeply necessary exploration of our current cultural climate and an urgent appeal to return to a truly liberal society.

The Puritans of the 17th century sought to refashion society in accordance with their own beliefs, but they were deep thinkers who were aware of their own fallibility. Today, in the grasp of the New Puritans, we see a very different story.

Leading a cultural revolution driven by identity politics and so-called 'social justice', the new puritanism movement is best understood as a religion - one that makes grand claims to moral purity and tolerates no dissent. Its disciples even have their own language, rituals and a determination to root out sinners through what has become known as 'cancel culture'.

In The New Puritans, Andrew Doyle powerfully examines the underlying belief-systems of this ideology and how it has risen so rapidly to dominate all major political, cultural and corporate institutions. He reasons that, to move forward, we need to understand where these New Puritans came from and what they hope to achieve. Written in the spirit of optimism and understanding, Doyle offers an eloquent and powerful case for the reinstatement of liberal values and explains why it's important we act now.

Hero speaking truth

I’d like to start by saying that, like the author, I’ve been on the left my entire life. My entire family is too, for 3 generations. But I bought & devoured this book because the left has lost its f****** mind. I’m also a radical feminist, who is incensed by the misogynistic and homophobic strain of gender identity zealots who’ve turned the collective left in North American, Europe & Australia/New Zealand into more offensive evolution deniers, homophobes & misogynists than their far-right counterparts. Political correctness has ruined democracy & become authoritarian, bigoted, & science-denialist. It can’t continue. It’s unsustainable and damaging to Free speech and the notions of science and discovery upon which our entire society depends. Whether you are on the political right or left, I encourage you to read this book. It’s essential that both sides of politics take collective action to restore free speech, the acknowledgment of factual reality, & respect for pluralism. This is a very serious problem and as a graduate student in the USA, I see it every day. University professors are being punished for saying things as fundamentally scientifically proven as “there are two biological sexes, male and female, and one cannot change to the opposite sex,” ! This is a threat to the rights of women & girls, of same-sex-attracted people. It is well overdue for a reckoning on what “wokeness” is doing to our society. It’s actually sleepwalking into science-denial, bigotry, & authoritarianism. It’s got to stop, and I strongly recommend you read this book to better understand the problems with this movement and its true nature as UNJUST, antisocial, absurd hypocrisy, counterproductive nonsense.

THIS NARCISSISTIC CRAZE IS HEADING TOWARDS DECLINE

Reclaim the courage to think and speak for yourself.
Learn how to not be cowed into submission by the new puritanical scare tactics and silencing tactics of this minority of witch-hunters who dominate as the Squeaky Wheels in media/politics at the moment.
They are on the way out.

The new Puritans' nature is ultimately cannibalistic, and the narcissistic craze will eventually self-destruct.

pretty good

well written and narrated but doesn't really add anything new to the discussion of what to do about woke excesses.
maybe it's because I've read similar books and essays making more or less the same points and using many of the same examples.

If this topic is new to you, it does cover it all very well.
I also thought that because Doyle is a comedian, it would be a bit funnier.

So Important

One of the best written books I've heard in a long time. I wish everyone would hear this. He really nails our current political climate and makes a hopeful plea for how we can get out of this "culture war".

Andrew Doyle is a HERO.

If only sane people would say to their tantruming toddlers on Twitter "you might learn something if you stopped Pretending to be a Victim, instead you just appear stunted by Narcissism and pitying people can't escape you fast enough. Forever miserable and lonely but a virus online trying to harm others. Bravo". In the meantime, corporations are like "HEY DON'T MESS WITH MY FORTUNE THESE CHILDREN WILL NEVER LEAVE MOMMIES BASEMENT. THEY'LL BUY AND DO ANYTHING TO FILL THE VOID IF WE CAN GET THEM A GOVERNMENT CHECK TO REMAIN IN A CAVE". We're doomed, but I applaud Doyle for trying.

A Roadmap Back to Sanity

Doyle takes on the Progressives with clarity, wit, logic and, in the end, compassion. It’s a feast of ideas and language as well.

One of the best books I’ve come across. Doyle’s prose is easy to listen to and very entertaining for such an important topic.

Excellent

As ever on point with rational thoughts, but this time with serious (hopefully workable) suggestions on how to overcome the insanity gripping western societies and governments. The Salem analogy is spot on and, given its ending, provides some potential glimmers of light at the end of a very boring tunnel

A book which should be needed but is very well needed at this time

Andrew Doyle writes the perfect book for this time, as someone who has always felt pretty left leaning it’s a weird time to find myself in, in which ideas that always seems so obvious are now seen as far right.

I highly recommend Andrew’s well written book full of wit and spot on information and takes on how crazy the world is becoming.

Necessary reading

I knew most of the info but it’s great to have it tied together in a coherent narrative, helps to undo some of the feeling of stunned confusion that can result from trying to follow the arguments on social media. This book and McWhorter’s ‘Woke Racism’ have similar takes and I’d recommend reading both of them. I think Doyle does downplay the evidence for influence of culture on behaviour, so was arguing out loud with the chapter criticising critiques of Tarantino, but I appreciate the fact that he wouldn’t try to get me fired or socially ostracised for that minor point of disagreement!

Perfect counterpoint to the rising illiberal mob: miss this at your peril!

Anyone mystified by the rise of anti Western culture infesting our institutions will find this book a revelation. Andrew Doyle’s highly articulate exposition of the intolerance, bullying and irrational crowd shaming underpinning cancel culture is a clarion call to the silent majority to stand up and be counted before it is too late. The new high priests of the woke, the gender inclusive & the proto religion of the divisive critical race theorists do not brook dissent nor will they countenance rational discourse. Read this book then tell a friend.

Finally it all makes sence

I had suspicions and fellings similar to those in the book, but was unable to put it into words. It's refreshing to listen to someone who made it make more sence.

Hear about the boot from the Chris Williamson podcast with the author, also worth a listen as it's complimentary to the book

This gives great insight to society's loony left

This is similar to an Anglicised version of James Lindsay's Critical Race Theory. It explains clearly, and honestly how the SJWs have wage a societal terror on the West, by skewing vocabulary, reinterpreting history and shutting down opposition.
This book should be on the reading lists of every school

Thought provoking

This book is quite simply a must read for anyone with an ounce of interest in how modern society is changing and why.

Doyle has mixed together some of the most important subjects in modern culture, with excellent research, humour and wonderful narration.

Reason in an unreasonable time

Accessible, articulate, well argued and I believe, well intentioned. A much needed voice of reason in this unreasonable time. My thanks to Andrew for being brave enough to speak the truth and risk the wrath truth brings today. Well worth a read, it may help if your moral compass has been sent into a spin by current trends.

Great , and funny book

Doyle draws apt comparisons to previous historical events, and warns of the dangers of remaining silent in the face of puritans. He offers the solution I personally thought we had collectively arrived at after the horrors of the twentieth century, but with an interesting twist in which he suggests we essentially operationalize critical thinking as introspection. I could not agree more!

The sooner we collectively take the piss out of the puritans, Doyle argues, the better, and he certainly does his part in this respect. The book gave me a bit of a chuckle here and there, properly ensuring I look mad to potential onlookers.

Highly recommended whether you are already watching the puritan-olympics (is it at all possible to avoid these days?!) or whether you are interested in learning about what these 'culture wars' that clearly do and don't exist — like veritable womxn — are about.

Thoughtful criticism of the issues

I’m buying the book following listening to it read. Good narration, and now I need to read, mark and digest further.

If Andrew is said to be right wing his arguments haven’t been read, and he addresses important issues in a peaceable way.

A great discussion of what our modern society has become

A wonderfully intelligent look at how civil discourse in modern society has degenerated into a possessed, egotistical group think that serves to destroy rather than create.

Exceptional!

This is certainly the best book I have read on the subject of critical social justice theory. Doyle is as thorough in his research as he is articulate. This book is a brilliant resource for those wanting to know how to understand and respond to woke ideology. It should be compulsory reading in high school.

Fair and Salient

Great summary of the "theory" of identity politics with engaging examples of unfairness. Really enjoyed the author's narration and contrast of the tenets of social liberalism and intersectional/critical dogma. Found the personal examples and anecdotes ( lived experience?) from Andrew's life to be a great way of illustrating both cancel culture in action and the opposite which we'll hopefully return to. Interested to see if we'll have a reasonable retort from the titular mob as we need open discussion to get along!
