Publisher's Summary

"A great new voice in suspense.... Perfect for fans of Big Little Lies who thrive on stories of deceit in the suburban world.” (J. T. Ellison, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of Her Dark Lies)

"Pitch perfect suspense.... The best debut I’ve read this year.” (Allison Brennan, New York Times best-selling author)

An intriguing and twisty domestic suspense about loyalty and deceit in a tight-knit Texas community where parents are known to behave badly and people are not always who they appear to be.

Emily, a popular but bookish prep school senior, goes missing after a night out with friends. She was last seen leaving a party with Alex, a football player with a dubious reputation. But no one is talking.

Now three mothers, Catherine, Leslie, and Morgan, friends turned frenemies, have their lives turned upside down as they are forced to look to their own children—and each other’s—for answers to questions they don’t want to ask.

Each mother is sure she knows who is responsible, but they all have their own secrets to keep and reputations to protect. And the lies they tell themselves and each other may just have the potential to be lethal in this riveting debut.

Fiction Like Gladwell

Welcome newcomer Kristin Bird who weaves a compelling story line that takes a little known and rarely understood psychological event to build a descriptive story around characters you will be convinced you come to know. As the reader you access this truth through well crafted, descriptive narrative, like Malcolm Gladwell’s teaching, but Bird is not limited to journalism. It’s captivating!

It took a couple chapters to understand the different characters. I’ll point that out as a challenge at first, but you get to know them deeply through that investment, which is why this book has a gripping and emotional impact. The final chapters slow down, which I read as a critic on other reviews. I found it a chance to say goodbye to those folks I just devoted the last few hours of my life with…I wish more stories did that.

Meaningful characters and believable plot that sticks with you. Highly recommended. Pick it up!

Fell apart.

This sounded good, the cover is nice and it’s a new voice in the mystery genre so I was stoked. Parts 1 and 2 were pretty interesting, although melodramatic and unbelievable. After that, the wheels fell off and I just could not do it anymore. I was able to return it for my credit luckily, which I rarely have to do. The narration was great and probably what kept me in it as long as it did. I wish I knew how it ended because I’m curious but not enough to sit through a few more hours of it.

It took awhile…

I had to be several chapters to remain interested in this book. It was more Interesting when the character (won’t spoil the plot) went missing. It kind of dragged on a bit. On a positive note, the ending was unexpected.

like a movie in my head

Absolutely loved this! It did take about 3 chapters to get going and figure everyone out but was easy to follow. The book is great and is literally like a movie playing in your head, loved the setting and the character development. Definitely recommend!

Just OK

This book is just OK, nothing special. The wheels came off in part 3 of the book. It was just too stupid to be believed.

Intricately-woven and original

This was a fantastic read/listen. The plot was truly not a regurgitated retelling of a formulaic story. It was fresh, original, and filled with enough surprises to keep you on your toes, without being overly far-fetched. The characters were well-developed, each with their own strengths and flaws, so they felt authentic. Finally, the narration was on point. I didn't notice any glaring falters, stumbles, or mispronunciation and the narrator's voice was pleasant. Highly recommend!

Pretty good!

The beginning is a bit confusing due to character development, but then it is an easy listen. Good story, excellent narrator.

Movie worthy

Really enjoyed this book. First chapter started slow but stay with it. You might guess what's going on but there are notable twists.
