Publisher's Summary

The New York Times bestseller

They say a tiger that devours too many humans can take the form of a man and walk among us...

In 1930s colonial Malaya, a dissolute British doctor receives a surprise gift of an eleven-year-old Chinese houseboy. Sent as a bequest from an old friend, young Ren has a mission: to find his dead master's severed finger and reunite it with his body. Ren has forty-nine days, or else his master's soul will roam the earth forever.

Ji Lin, an apprentice dressmaker, moonlights as a dancehall girl to pay her mother's debts. One night, Ji Lin's dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir that leads her on a crooked, dark trail.

As time runs out for Ren's mission, a series of unexplained deaths occur amid rumours of tigers who turn into men. In their journey to keep a promise and discover the truth, Ren and Ji Lin's paths will cross in ways they will never forget.

Captivating and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores the rich world of servants and masters, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and unexpected love. Woven through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a story of the highest order.

A good, tense mystery, but...

I liked it. It was good. But I can't tell what the main story-line was or why it changed between first person and third person perspective. Still, a good story, fast-paced at the right places, and I really liked the difference between the locals and the English.

Excellent performance by the author

Some great components came together to make for a very likable listening experience. I loved the way Chinese and Malay folklore was seamlessly woven into the story. I also loved the strong female character, Ji lin. The narrator did a fantastic job. Highly recommend!

Poor narration

Narrator's intonation is annoying. Pauses in wrong places. I couldn't stick with it even after changing the speed to see if it would help.

Don't be put off by the narration

Initially I struggled with the strange stop/start, halting style of the narrator and didn't think I'd be able to keep listening. I'm so glad I persevered as I really enjoyed the story. The characters are very endearing.

An adult fairy tale

Being born in Malaysia, I found this book- storyline, characters, description of life in pre-independence Malaya-thoroughly enjoyable. It reminded me of the bedtime stories my mum used to read me as a kid, and having this read to me as an Audible book has temporarily made me feel like a child again! I sometimes get distracted when I listen to audiobooks but this story had me gripped from the first word. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I loved it.

Good story, if you like everything tied up at the end this is for you!

Good start, then I wondered where it was all going, it meandered a little and I’m not sure whether the characters were developed enough to merit that.
However, about 1/2 to 2/3 through it really picked up again and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot right to the end.
Interesting too about Chinese culture and I thought the interplay between the living and the dead was really well done.
I would definitely recommend this book

Enchanting Journey

What an absolutely riveting foray into another earth space and time. I was mesmerised by the story, and the narrative cleverly mixed Malaysian, social mores and values with the almost supernatural, to create an intense, richly woven, narrative. I especially like Ji Lin's boldness, and her forward thinking/feminist, mindset. All the characters wete expertly developed, and immersed me from start to finish.

Besutifully written/observed, exquisitely imagined, and a fascinating glimpse of an interesting culture, of whichI had no knowledge.

Excellent read.

Disappointing

I often read reviews before about the narration of a book and didn’t really pay too much attention. I should have done, I really couldn’t get past the irritation I had with the narrator/author’s voice and pronunciation. I almost couldn’t finish the book. The plot was good to start with and then became ridiculous. I spend ages finding the right book to listen to and am usually really pleased with my choices but sadly not this time. Why was it recommended on Between The Covers?

.

4.25/5

Told from several points of view, The Night Tiger is a mysterious tale that draws you in. A dressmaker's apprentice, an orphaned house boy and a British doctor are drawn into the same mystery from different angles, surrounded by weretigers, amputated fingers and Chinese & Malay folklore and superstition.

- The different point of view were very distinct. some are told in first person, others in third and they all had their own separate voice and personality. I enjoyed Ren's parts (the house boy) the most but all were well done. informative but leaving enough unseen and unsaid to keep the intrigue.

- The whole book was very atmospheric and the feel of the different places and environments came across well. There were some dream sections where this was particularly notable.

- The author's narration was excellent and brought the story to life. As above, it was easy to tell which character's point of view was the present one due to the tone.

A strange but fascinating mystery story. Perfect for those who enjoy magical realism, Asian folklore and a good winding mystery.

Boring

I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't focus on the story. The narration didn't engage me at all and I found I had to Rewind to find out what was happening. I'm giving up.

The Night Tiger Audiobook

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had of read it rather than listened to it as an audiobook. It took a long time for me to realise that each chapter were alternating characters and therefore it was hard to follow.
I’ll be reading this again, in book form.

A good read but a little light. I like to work out some things for myself. Needs a twist

excellent

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The mystery and symmetry and the imagery were stimulating. The narrator was easy to listen to. I don't know if there is a second book or a series, but I will be keeping an eager eye out. There is certainly scope and set-up, enough, for it.

I wanted to love it

I really wanted to love this book as I’ve been hoping for more authentic voices to come out of South East Asia, but in the end I found it rather forgettable. The characters didn’t resonate and the story was just not very believable.
