A behind-the-scenes operator at the CIA, Wallace was integral to the agency's secret war against China's national intelligence service, which infiltrates government offices, major businesses, and systems crucial to our security. Wallace had severely damaged China's Washington spy ring with a devastating ruse, a so-called "black swan", in which a deep-undercover female agent targeted and destroyed a key Chinese official. Now, Wallace's mysterious death suggests that the CIA itself has been compromised and that China has someone inside the agency.

Publisher's Summary
A novice naval aviator grows into a hero in this gripping and authentic WWII adventure by a master storyteller.
Lieutenant Bobby Steele, USN, is a fresh-faced and eager naval aviator: a "Nugget" who needs to learn the ropes and complex procedures of taking off and returning safely to his aircraft carrier. A blurry night of drinking lands him in an unfamiliar bed aboard the USS Oklahoma; later that day, the Japanese destroy Pearl Harbor. After cheating death and losing his friend in this act of war, the formerly naive Steele vows to avenge the attack.
Flying sea battle after battle, Steele survives the most dangerous air combat in World War II, including Midway, is shot down twice, rescued twice, and eventually leads a daring mission to free prisoners from a secluded Japanese POW camp. Packed with authentic military action on land and at sea in the Pacific Theatre of WWII and featuring a memorable protagonist based on a true-life hero, The Nugget is a first-class adventure by a former commander whose family served in the Pacific.

Too much
I like P.T.Deutermann's novels. They rarely disappoint. This one did not live up to my high expectations, largely because of believability. There are too many incidents that span a huge breadth from a new pilot being involved in the Battle of Midway and then moving to guerilla warfare in the Philippines. I generally enjoyed the novel, but I just didn't find myself getting fully invested in the story because it didn't feel like they connected with my ideas of what happened. I enjoyed this one, but more in a routine kind of way rather than the types of novels that Deutermann has written previously in which I became fully invested and believed the story was plausible.

A different style of storytelling
This story is about a freshly minted US Navy dive bomber pilot, codenamed 'Fish', and his gunner, codenamed 'Rooster'. These two endure several ship and boat sinkings, boat being a submarine. They endure torpedoes, bombs, strafing and mines as well as drifting at sea for extended periods of time. They eventually end up on a small Filipino island south of Mindanao. The island is occupied by very brutal Japanese soldiers who rape, torture, starve and kill the local population, as well as a large group of British POWs they keep in murderous conditions within an armed camp.
The story starts with a US Navy board of inquiry as 'Fish' is trying to prove to the US Navy that he is who he says he is and that he is truly a US Naval officer. This is because his appearance was altered while he lived in hiding from the Japanese on a small Filipino island. The story is told first hand by 'Fish' and it's a fascinating story of survival, endurance, and learning, I think that's enough said as anymore gives away too much detail.
Highly recommend this story!

Pilots war with the Japanese!!
This book is told in the 1st person. It is a bomber pilots story of his life during the war with Japan. Is it another documentary on war? No it is not! This story will really surprise you. It is not what anyone will expect. Its a great story told through the pilots eyes. Not a plane book, not a soldier book, not a pilot book. It is a wonderful story of a mans life during the war with Japan, it is entertaining, well written, it has a surprise around every turn. If you looking for a new book to take a break with, this is it. Narration is well done and you feel a part of this entire story. Good Job! I loved it!

Captivating read
I've enjoyed all of PT Deutermann's books. The subject matter is generally military, usually Navy, but the stories vary quite a bit. The protagonist experienced many of the major battles of WWII with associated adventures. I'll not tell more - you need to read this book!

PTD
I've enjoyed all of the author's books on the Pacific Theater of World War II and this one was no different. A few books ago it seemed like we were headed to the dropping of the bombs to end the war but the last couple have stepped back in time during the war ad brought different aspects of the war to we readers. Thank you for that.
This book seemed like it was going to be about a new dive bomb pilot and his exploits in the war, and it was that, but about half the book was taken up with being marooned on an island that is part of the Philippines working with the locals fighting the enemy. Both halves were really good listens.
I hope there are more coming.

Unusual WWII Storyline
This is the ninth Deutermann book I have read (if I count correctly) and he remains excellent. This is a simpler story than many he has told, but he tells it well and with passion. The reader did an excellent job and the facts were fascinating to learn, although it did seem almost like a "survey" as the protagonist was involved in almost everything that happened in the South Pacific during his time period.

P.T. Deutermann is one of my very favorite authors and he did not disappoint me with this one either. His fictional / historical storytelling of WWII naval events is outstanding. The narration by Mr. Pruden is perfect. Thanks once again P.T.
