Publisher's Summary

In the slums of 1880s New York, Una Kelly has grown up to be a rough-and-tumble grifter, able to filch a pocketbook in five seconds flat. But when another con-woman pins her for a murder she didn't commit, Una is forced to flee. Running from the police, Una lies her way into an unlikely refuge: the nursing school at Bellevue Hospital.

Based on Florence Nightingale's nursing principles, Bellevue is the first school of its kind in the country. Where once nurses were assumed to be ignorant and unskilled, Bellevue prizes discipline, intellect, and moral character, and only young women of good breeding need apply. At first, Una balks at her prim classmates and the doctors' endless commands. Yet life on the streets has prepared her for the horrors of injury and disease found on the wards, and she slowly gains friendship and self-respect.

Just as she finds her footing, Una's suspicions about a patient's death put her at risk of exposure, and will force her to choose between her instinct for self-preservation, and exposing her identity in order to save others.

Predictable

This is like a Hallmark movie. Simple, predictable plot with little to no suspense and an obvious love story.

Author of Knowledge

The author of this book/audiobook has been trained as a nurse, and so she brings much authority to the story that is spun. It is well written and well worth your time!

Vanessa Johansson turns in another professional narration. Always engaging.

I highly recommend this audiobook.

Not worth time or credit

I don’t know what I was expecting but this story was ridiculously weak and painful to listen to; not to knock the narrator, she was good. The plot was not interesting in the least. The characters were not engaging at all. The protagonist was a joke and there was nothing to hold on to to encourage more listening. I wish I could exchange this credit for another book, but I guess not all books are worthy. I only gave 1 star because it’s required for review.

A sweet story while also being a good. period Murder mystery.

Worth the credit. I would say it’s probably a good women’s story. If you like Karen Menuhin, you will like this book. The narrator is terrific, and the writing requires a little suspension of disbelief, but not much. I really highly recommend it.
The historical aspect of it was interesting, especially the development of Bellevue hospital. Anyone from New York will certainly relate.
