Publisher's Summary

The galaxy is burning. The Emperor's loyal primarchs prepare to do battle with Warmaster Horus and his turncoat Legions on the black sand of Isstvan.

Such dark times herald new and yet more terrible things still to come, and when Astropath Kai Zulane unwittingly learns a secret that threatens to tip the balance of the war, he is forced to flee for his life. Alongside a mysterious band of renegades, he plunges into the deadly underworld of Terra itself, hunted like a criminal by those he once trusted. In the face of betrayal, Kai must decide where his own loyalties lie and whether some truths should be buried forever.

Wow!

Easily one of the best in the Horus Heresy series. The author does a great job of making the listener (reader) develop an attachment to the tragic characters. You won't be disappointed in this book.

hard to get into.

the book turned out to be really good, but i found it hard to get into because of the story and how long it took to build up, it did however get very interesting and enjoyable. narration is very good.

worst 40K book I've ever wasted time on. SKIP IT

this book has convinced me that Graham McNiell uses ghostwriters. what a shit show. mild spoiler ahead.

the book gets Magnus' spirit visit to Terra wrong by 2 years and makes it make no sense then later tops itself in ridiculousness by having a fully armed and armored custodian lose in a 1 on 1 fight to a naked World Eater. This is C.S. Groto level writing. skip this book.

Lacking but not bad.

I think Graham was consulting CS Goto when he wrote this cause you have to suspend a ton of belief in order to swallow this pill. That's saying something when it all takes place in a fictional universe. Diehard lore fans will not appreciate the inconsistencies but might find comfort in some of the interesting tidbits throughout.

Move on to the next book in the series!

Very slow start, and the overall story was a waste of time. I recommend you skip this one and move onto the next in the series!

skip this if you can

story isnt bad, just filler, absolutely skippable. sets up for future filler but has more to do with the setting than the story of the heresy.

Good read.

Albeit slow to start, given time this became a great read! the narration was excellent and characters pretty well developed. The ending itself leaves open questions and continuity whilst still finding it's own end in a good twist.

One of the great reads of the series.

Fascinating story of the Empire on the brink and the terrible future that awaits. Full of complex characters sent spinning by the momentous tides of fate. One of the great reads of the series.

Amazing

Graham McNeil and Jonathan Keeble are a great combo outcast dead was a great story I loved it. But considering custodes are the pinnacle outside of primarchs I find it hard too see any astartes besting one in combat the two world eaters fighting one was pretty epic though

Great read

I have listened to about 10 books of the Horus Heresy and found McNeill's writing style (particularly in this book) enjoyable, with just the right amount of action and a bit of slow burn. Also, very interesting characters. Jonathan Keeble is an excellent narrator and his deep, resonant voice was a pleasure to listen to.

disappointing. Custodian writing a let down

So much initial promise. Spoiler ahead: after listening to a custodian being killed by a space marine...by having his chest plate punched through, I almost couldn't listen any further. Sloppy writing of the author. I wonder what book in the series will finally do the Custodes justice about how powerful they truly are. if your reading this review, just know that if you decide to not buy it, you have made a good choice.

Outstanding Story and Narration

I simply could not get enough of this audio book! A twisting in depth story which comes together beautifully. Jonathan Keeble is a narrator of unmatched skill. He truly is second to none and going to other audio books without him narrating is like leaving your favorite place on earth, for somewhere you'd rather not be. One of my favorites in the Heresy series thus far.
