Story
Las Vegas is gambling's mecca - Sin City the Entertainment Capital of the World with 40 million visitors a year. But that's just part of the story. This carefully documented history tracks the rise of Las Vegas from its vital role in World War II, of the Rat Pack era of the 50s, the explosive growth of the 90s, and it's colossal collapse in the post 2008 real-estate crash. It offers a history of the iconic Strip, but also profiles the neighborhoods where over 2 million people live.

Sarno's casinos - and his ideas about how to build casinos - created the template for Las Vegas today. Before him, Las Vegas meant dealers in string ties and bland, functional architecture. He taught the city how to dress up its hotels in fantasy, putting toga dresses on cocktail waitresses and making sure that even the stationery carried through with the theme. He saw Las Vegas as a place where ordinary people could leave their ordinary lives and have extraordinary adventures.

In the 1970s and thru the mid-1980s, the Chicago Outfit was the dominant organized crime family in Las Vegas, with business interests in several casinos. During those years the Outfit and its colleagues in Kansas City, Milwaukee, and Cleveland were using Sin City as a cash cow. Commonly referred to as the “skim,” unreported revenue from Outfit-controlled casinos was making its way out of Vegas by the bag full and ending up in the coffers of the crime bosses in those four locations.

The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Publisher's Summary
Along with "what happens here stays here" and "Circus Circus isn't that bad", one of the biggest Las Vegas myths is that so-called insiders are the city's best sources of tips, reviews, and information. Often, however, obsessive Las Vegas visitors offer more trustworthy suggestions and accurate insights about the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street. An unapologetic Las Vegas outsider, author Tim Dressen shares advice, hints, and unfiltered opinions gathered as cohost of Five Hundy by Midnight, the Original Las Vegas Podcast, for more than a decade. With the same irreverent spirit as the podcast, The Outsiders' Guide to Las Vegas is packed with useful information, entertaining perspectives, and more than a few off-the-rails rants. This is the Las Vegas guide by an outsider, inspired by outsiders, and for outsiders.

Great insight; hilarious performance
Set out wondering how a LV travel guide would work on audio. It turns out brilliantly, provided the author is a witty podcast pro who knows his stuff.
The reading is funny, relevant and full of first-hand experience and in-depth knowledge of all things Sin City, especially to tourists. Having been both a local and now a regular visitor, Tim analysis is spot on. A bit irreverent and a lot about food and booze, he tells it exactly like it is in a manner that hooks you.
I only wish he traveled to other places so he could write about them, too.

If you have never been to Las Vegas or make a 3 time a year pilgrimage, this is an essential read or listen. The author and narrator Tim is as much enthusiastic as he is informative. True it is a guide, but Tim deliveries it in story form. Tim could easily write a companion to this book and it would be just as awesome. I'm sure I will take a listen again in the future.

Vegas Baby!!!!
Its hard not to get excited about anything Vegas for me. Although I have been to Vegas about two dozen times, I figured lets hear what this guy has to say.
To my surprised, the book is pretty much up to date which is evident by the references to some of the newer places.
The book was enjoyable as it sort of reiterated stuff I already knew but also provided great insight into stuff I did not know.
The details about each hotel was very useful and glad to listen because my wife and talked about staying at a few places and drop them from the list after listening to the book.
Cromwell is one for sure that we will avoid staying at but will still visit for the gambling and Giada's.
For someone who hasn't been to Vegas before and thinking of going, its a great book.

Entertaining and informative, but pre-Covid.
I'm probably not this book's target audience in that I have no plans to visit the city in the near future. But since few of us are doing much travel at the moment, I bought this largely to travel vicariously, and it's great for that. The book is packed with information and it's irreverent tone makes it a fun listen. Assuming you're not put off by the author/narrators sarcastic, cynical and scatological sense of humour.
Unfortunately it was written in 2015, so who knows how much was still valid even before Covid struck. But on the off-chance that anything mentioned here is still there by the time you get to go there: there's plenty of great info to guide you. If nothing else, it's a colourful snapshot of the city at the time of writing.
The author does a very solid job as his own natatory, ably assisted by his wife who makes brief appearances.
