Publisher's Summary

The Earl of St. Merryn needs a woman. His intentions are purely practical - he simply wants someone sensible and suitably lovely to pose as his betrothed for a few weeks among polite society. He has his own agenda to pursue, and a false fiancée will keep the husband-hunters at bay while he goes about his business. The simplest solution is to hire a paid companion. Finding the right candidate proves more of a challenge than he expected. But when he encounters Miss Elenora Lodge, the fire in her golden eyes sways him to make a generous offer. Her sorry financial circumstances - and dreams of a life of independence - convince her to accept. But St. Merryn appears to be hiding a secret or two, and things seem oddly amiss in his gloomy London home. Elenora soon discovers that this lark will be a far more dangerous adventure than she'd been led to believe. And the Earl of St. Merryn will find that the meek and mild companion he'd initially envisioned has become a partner in his quest to catch a killer - and an outspoken belle of the ball who stirs a bothersome passion in his practical heart.

Fun, Witty, A Little Heat

Excellent narration, distinction of characters. This was just a good historical romance mystery, some laugh out loud wit, and just enough passion to keep it interesting. Loved the characters (eccentric and "good" people) and the mystery.

Nice

Nice story, plot had twists and turns. Narrator is the best ever .Narrator for Audible. She could read the phone book and it would be great. Very talented with all the character voices.

Nice easy listen with a great narrator.

Nice light read.. Interesting enough to want more, but not heavy that you have to rewind every time you miss a sentence.

Now that's a spine-tingling mystery!

I enjoyed this one very much, especially after the rather unsatisfying What the Duke Desires by Serena James, fizzled out at the end.

This book has a great murder mystery with a fantastic ending that made the whole thing worth my time.

Like all the HR's I read, this was a somewhat typical period piece: Destitute lady is approached by a wealthy Earl to act as his fiance, while he does a little crime solving. (Why he needs a fiance in the first place isn't really explained, but get one he does.) She is of the independent and brilliant stripe, and it isn't long before she is hip deep in the case as his partner. Together they follow a series of well thought out clues, coming closer and closer to the killer. The H and h definitely steal the show, with a few sweet side characters to lend a hand along the way. Add a nasty butler, and a Bow Street runner, and you get a great ensemble supporting cast.

Of course they fall in love, that's to be expected. And there are some lusty, if abbreviated love scenes. What isn't expected is how creepy the killer is, and how fun the crime solving plot becomes. The ending is positively Gothic and I loved it!

Bianca Amato is great, as usual, but with her usual overly melodramatic reading giving the Gothic imagery a bit more bite, I felt like I was there!

I could smell the dripping crypt in this one!

yummy.

Amazing. An intelligent woman, is actually attractive to an English gentleman. Cute story, although a common premise, with a dash of mystery to entice. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story on my commute.

Grown up Regency

Such a pleasure to have adult characters and a heroine who doesn't climax when she surrenders her virginity. The sex is pertinent to the story and is not gratuitous or overdone. The narrator's performance is wonderful.

A wonderful introduction to Amanda Quick!

Warm and witty characters, mystery and romance. The bedroom scenes are not overpowering and tastefully written.
I'll definitely be trying more by this writer.

The narration is amongst the best I've heard, especially in terms of the pacing and despite the odd Americanised pronunciation (odd in a British voice).

Exquisitely Made

The perfectly delivered perfectly paced narration enhances the enjoyable, enteraining, drama of this delightful tale, well set in period and style. The small "Americanisms" do not hamper the flow, and only grate fractionally to English ears.

Such a well scripted mystery with carriage loads of humour to egg up the genre in a most enjoyable way. It was refreshing to have a backdrop of science and archaic experimentation, rather than frivolous nonsense, over dramatized with angst. The description of interiors, art, and vestments/costume add so much depth and detail. Excellent dialogue.

If you enjoy Stella Riley or Georgette Heyer, you will enjoy this. A FACINATING DALLIANCE

A very enjoyable Victorian romance, enhanced by great narration. It certainly started my day in the right way while listening during my daily walk/run route. Will be searching for more books with this narrator.
