Publisher's Summary

Introducing your new crime thriller fix:

Bristol detective DS George Cross, champion of the outsider, the voiceless and the dispossessed. DS George Cross can be rude, difficult and awkward with people. But his unfailing logic and dogged pursuit of the truth means his conviction rate is the best on the force.

An outsider himself, having been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, DS Cross is especially drawn to cases concerning the voiceless and the dispossessed. Now, Cross is untangling the truth about a young woman who died three days ago. With no fingerprints, no weapon and no witnesses, the Bristol Crime Unit are ready to close the case.

The coroner rules suicide: the woman had a long history of drug abuse. But her mother is convinced it was murder: her daughter has been clean and sober for over two years.

DS Cross is determined to defy his bosses and re-open the case, even if it costs him his career. Soon he is mired in a labyrinth of potential suspects—but can he solve the case before his superiors shut it down for good?

Love this series!

I have grown to love this series and the cast of characters it’s centred around. All three of the books I have listened to have been extremely well plotted and brilliantly narrated, even the change of narrator for book three wasn’t an issue (I’m a bit like George in that respect) I highly recommend this book and indeed the whole series, which I hope will continue for some time.

was moved to tears

this latest book ds cross book is as brilliant as the first two. somehow, mr. sullivan has created a character i admire and root for. this is most notable in the very last chapter, in that it was incredibly moving. never before have i found myself getting teary from a murder mystery. in short, a fantastic read i could see becoming a brilliant tv series.

Getting better each book

I have to say first that I was thrown for a loop because John Heffernan was not the narrator. Finlay Robertson is not just a different person but narrates completely differently which made George Cross almost seem like a different person. Okay, I got used to it but it took several chapters, and, just like the other books, I listened to it 3 times.
The story is great, the characters become much more familiar, DS Cross's hobby gets more interesting and he seems to be better at normal communication.

Oh, the ending is a killer. I can't wait for the next book.

New Favorite Series

I definitely stumbled on a good one in this series. The writing is excellent- Particularly when it delves into George and his idiosyncratic personality. It’s the first time that I have read a convincing story that realistically deals with those on the spectrum ( imo). I’m sure that it is simplified for those not really knowledgeable—but it’s a great way to bring awareness.
Look forwards to the next.

The narration is perfect too. I think all of the characters are portrayed deftly by Mr. Finlay. The narration makes all the difference in most audio books and it is done wonderfully here.

A series that gets better with each book

As lovely to read as watching a rose unfold. We get to know the characters gently as clever who-, how- and why-done its are revealed. The mind is curious and intrigued while the heart soothed and happy. I look forward to the next book/audio.

Good Story, Narration Not For Me

I loved The Cyclist and The Dentist, but with a change in narrator, I had trouble getting through The Patient. It still has the writing and characters I have come to enjoy, but the voice is flat and even irritating to me.

Love this series

While it's a little dry at times I really enjoyed the story and the continued character development of George and his father and police colleagues. As with the prior books in the series, there is plenty of police investigation detailed as the search for the killer plays out. I hope there will be another book coming soon! Oh, the narrator was excellent too.

Narrator...

I'll be returning this audio as the narrator's inability to maintain a consistent flow in dialogue is too distracting.

HEART WARMING

Just a bit different without losing its identity
as a mystery with intrigue and thrills. Nice ending. I can recommend this novel.

Fan of George Cross for life

Absolutely loved this one! This amazing author proved that it is not necessary to use extreme violence or explicit sex to make a story great!

Superb summer thriller

Superb summer thriller. This is the third in the DS Cross thriller series, but can be read as a standalone. DSCross is fast becoming my favourite detective with his wry sense of humour and quick intelligence. He is on the Spectrum and can pick up on the finer details that others miss. He works alongside a wily partner, who sees his quirks and his genius. They make a dynamic pair, even if DS Cross doesn't reveal much of his suspicions and keeps things close to his chest until he is sure. When a desperate mother approaches the station for umpteenth time professing the death of her daughter wasn't suicide DS Cross gives her the time and space to explain. Dismissed as an ex-junkie whonhas relapsed and died by accidental suicide, DS Cross picks up on one fine detail that doesn't fit. This leads to lots more little inconsistencies. An intelligent, humorous and twisty read. I loved deciphering the clues #thepatient #timsullivan #dccross #dccrossthriller #policethriller #crimethriller #netgalley

Superb in every way!

The best yet in the series! Absolutely wonderful in every way it had me laughing and crying.
I love how the characters have developed and can’t wait for the next in the series. Brilliant author and the new narrator was also fabulous.

Best So Far.

I love my murder mysteries. I found this the best by far. The characters are complex but believable. The plot full of enough twists and turns to hold interest without introducing so many red herrings (as some of his peers) to frustrate the reader trying to predict ahead. In short, we are borne along the journey just as the detectives in our book.
