Publisher's Summary

In addition to his library duties and his role as doting grandad, Charlie has enrolled in an early medieval history course offered by young, charismatic professor Carey Warriner. Charlie feels a bit out of place - his fellow classmates are half his age - except for Dixie Bell Compton, another "mature" student. When Charlie hears an angry exchange between her and their professor, his interest in piqued. He's even more intrigued when she shows up at his office asking for a study partner. Charlie turns her down and is saddened to learn just a few days later that Dixie has been killed.

Charlie wonders if Professor Warriner had anything to do with Dixie's death. Warriner is married to a fellow professor who happens to be a successful author. There are rumors on campus that their marriage was on the rocks. Was Dixie's death the result of a lovers' triangle gone bad? Charlie soon discovers that the professor's wife may have some secrets of her own, and his suspect list is only getting longer.

As he and Diesel step further into the tangled web of relationships, someone else is viciously killed. Whose jealousy finally erupted into murderous rage? Was it a crime of passion, or is there another more sinister motive? Charlie races to unravel this mystery: and to draw out the culprit, he may just have to put his own life on the line....

Charlie's Back in School 😄

Love this series! Eleven books and still going strong. Charlie has joined a class in early medieval history taught by a good looking Casanova type professor (Carey Warriner) at Athena College where he works. Professor Warriner wants Charlie to take the class for actual credit, but Charlie is only auditing it. A fellow classmate, Dixie Bell Compton, who is also older, like Charlie approaches him about being a study partner, but Charlie declines . . . and to his dismay, Dixie Bell is found murdered soon afterward. Charlie wonders about her murderer. Could it be Professor Warriner? He overheard the two of them arguing. And even though the professor is married, both he and his wife have been seen around town with other people who appear to be more than just friends. Soon Chief Deputy Kanesha Berry is investigating the murder and asking Charlie for his help. Kanesha and Charlie have a strange, yet respectful relationship, Kanesha being the daughter of Charlie's housekeeper, Azalea. I love hearing about all the meals that Azalea cooks, and in this book Azalea is getting attached to the new cat at Charlie's house, Ramses, and actually takes him home with her. 😊 I did not figure out who the killer was throughout the entire story. Great addition to the series!

Each book gets better and better

I enjoy Charlie's and Diesel mystery adventures. The stories could easily come from real cases, and I love how the family and friends are an important part of the full story.

Same gracious cozy but some plot copouts

I really enjoy James' even-toned evocation of gentility and kindness in his characters and stories. I find it soothing and comforting even though or even as it takes "the edge" off of his plots. The mystery was good but I am sorry to say he copped to cliches in wrapping it up this time, in the denouement of the plot.
