Publisher's Summary

Twelve-time New York Times best-selling author Mark Hyman, MD, presents his unique Pegan diet - including meal plans, recipes, and shopping lists.

For decades, the diet wars have pitted advocates for the low-carb, high-fat paleo diet against advocates of the exclusively plant-based vegan diet and dozens of other diets leaving most of us bewildered and confused. For those of us on the sidelines, trying to figure out which approach is best has been nearly impossible - both extreme diets have unique benefits and drawbacks. But how can it be, we've asked desperately, that our only options are bacon and butter three times a day or endless kale salads? How do we eat to reverse disease, for optimal health, longevity, and performance. How do we eat to reverse climate change? There must be a better way!

Fortunately, there is. With The Pegan Diet's food-is-medicine approach, Mark Hyman explains how to take the best aspects of the paleo diet (good fats, limited refined carbs, limited sugar) and combine them with the vegan diet (lots and lots of fresh, healthy veggies) to create a delicious diet that is not only good for your brain and your body, but also good for the planet.

Featuring 30 recipes and plenty of infographics illustrating the concepts, The Pegan Diet offers a balanced and easy-to-follow approach to eating that will help you get, and stay, fit, healthy, focused, and happy - for life.

Right on the "Mark"

I was surprised that this was a 5 hour audio book, but this is 5 hours of the latest research by an incredibly knowledgeable and articulate doctor that couldn't have given us that much great information in less time. He is passionate about good health information as I am also, after losing my mother, a brother, and 2 wives to cancer.

Most of our doctors were educated 20 years ago by doctors who were educated 20 years even earlier. By now their knowledge is so dated that they're often giving us bad advice. Our society is getting sicker every year under their watch.

I am looking forward to the day when functional 2021 (food and lifestyle medicine) replaces the failure we know as sick care and drugs. If we are not lifetime learners we will die because we don't know how to remain healthy. I was already doing most of the things that Dr. Hyman suggests, but now I feel that my health knowledge is Feb. 2021 up to date. Thanks, Dr. Hyman.

Too Political but good nutrition advice.

Dr. Hyman reiterates many of the same principles of health that most well educated individuals in the exercise/health/wellness field know but he does a good job at getting you to understand that all these packaged, over marketed fad diets are just that, and I believe just there to capitalize on money opportunities. I like the specific foods to eat and to avoid. HOWEVER, I nearly shut the audio book off and returned it after 600th mention of climate change. I do think he brings up some good points but he doesn’t discuss the very real opposition points to his claims, which hold great validity. You can tell an extreme bias and it was very annoying. Overall, I gained value from the book and it reinforces the habits I currently utilize.

Contradicts himself throughout the book

For someone saying he’s trying to eliminate diet confusion, he definitely missed the mark. Paleo + Vegan sounds intriguing and makes sense if you’re talking about a more plant focused version of Paleo. However, he advocates eating beans, rice, grains, etc, which is the complete antithesis of the foundations of paleo, which is that grains, rice, beans are bad for gut health. Later on, he says black rice is his favorite, but you should only eat it occasionally in small amounts...same with quinoa. then later in the book He says that he batch prepares a large amount of brown rice (not black) and quinoa each week to food prep. If you’re only supposed to eat a little once in a while, why are you making it in bulk? In the end, his “Pegan” idea is basically just a rebranded version of “The Maker’s Diet” from years ago, and much more self-contradicting.

Was once a vegan...

For the last four years I ate a vegan diet. However, about 1.5 years ago I felt I needed to change. About a month ago I slowly incorporated meat into my diet again. The choice was difficult and one that I ruminated on for over a year, however, I feel better in ways I didn’t know possible. Only, I want to make sure that the food I’m putting into my body is both good for myself and the planet. This book does a great job of laying out everything someone would need to know... regardless of their food lifestyle choices. ** If you are vegan, there’s a whole chapter just for you! Plus, there are helpful tips in the other chapters than can be applied to a vegan lifestyle as well. Thought this was a very informative and helpful book.

Enlightening and very informational

Dr. Mark Hyman explains how food is medicine and what we can do to get back to eating healthy and how that will help improve our lives. Eating properly can have the same effects only better than todays medicines offer us for ailments that we are basically causing ourselves because of what “they” tell us is healthy and good for us. Read it for yourself and make your own decisions, I am going to change my diet and see how my body reacts to those changes after giving it some time to react to the new vitamin rich, whole foods that I am going to begin to prepare with my loved ones.
