Publisher's Summary

We always have a choice, Pema Chödrön teaches: We can let the circumstances of our lives harden us and make us increasingly resentful and afraid, or we can let them soften us and make us kinder. Here Pema provides the tools to deal with the problems and difficulties that life throws our way. This wisdom is always available to us, she teaches, but we usually block it with habitual patterns rooted in fear. Beyond that fear lies a state of openheartedness and tenderness. This audiobook teaches us how to awaken our basic goodness and connect with others, to accept ourselves and others complete with faults and imperfections, and to stay in the present moment by seeing through the strategies of ego that cause us to resist life as it is.

Fortified to face this moment

My life coach Rev Rowena Silvera Beck recommended this book. It was a wonderful lesson in living in the present and knowing that whatever life brings our way, we are prepared for it.

Great contemplation on compassion

Pema Chodron is a fantastic writer and the book is very well suited for driving about life contemplating compassion. Excellent focus on being un-grounded and un learning what we believe to be concrete.

Not up to her standard

The writing, especially in the first two chapters is almost incoherent. The description of Bodhichita is disjointed and unclear. The later text is clearer, but loses its effectiveness without the personal and humorous speech quality of Pema. Very disappointing.

Beautiful

This book literally changed my life. I first bought it in 2003, when I was a broken, angry young man. When I read this I softened. I found love and happiness, things I figured were simply fairytales. Now as I approach 40 I am something I never thought I’d be. A happy man. And it all started with The Places That Scare You.
Do yourself a favour and listen to this. Remember Buddhism is a philosophy not a religion. I know many people who follow the path of the Buddha from many (and very different) religions.

All the truth any of us ever need.

There are many spiritual books out there about which it can be said 'Really, you need not read any more than this and you will have everything you need to awaken, but practice.' This is one of them.

Wonderful, inspiring, human wisdom

I've been trying to practice Buddhism for many years now, so the content is familiar, but Pema Chödrön presents things in such a practical, beautiful and human way which really brings things alive into an encouraging and real practice.

Amazing book, endlessly fascinating and wise.

I took my time to listen to this book because I really wanted to take it all in as I found it very inspiring to be able to open my mind and to connect with the world of my own experience and the world around me. Loved the voice of the narrator as well! Very beautifully read.

A true gift

There is such lightness of heart within the way Pema approaches such a deep and heavy topic such as suffering. I appreciate the honest and straightforward way with which she leads us through various Buddhist practices and concepts. This is definitely a book that I will return to in order to extract every ounce of wisdom it contains. This is a book that anyone who recognises the need to cultivate compassion, will find value in. Thank you Pema, these teachings are truly a gift.
