It recognizes that light and dark, birth and death - bitter and sweet - are forever paired. Susan Cain employs the same mix of research, storytelling, and memoir she used in Quiet to explore why we experience sorrow and longing, and how embracing the bittersweetness at the heart of life is the true path to creativity, connection, and transcendence.

In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

We've all seen the happiness on the face of a child while playing in the school yard. Or the blissful abandon of a golden retriever racing across a lawn. This is the joy of play. By definition, play is purposeless, all-consuming, and fun. But as Dr. Stuart Brown illustrates, play is anything but trivial. It is a biological drive as integral to our health as sleep or nutrition. We are designed by nature to flourish through play.

Publisher's Summary
If you’re not having fun, you’re not fully living. The author of How to Break Up with Your Phone makes the case that, far from being frivolous, fun is actually critical to our well-being - and shows us how to have more of it.
“This delightful book might just be what we need to start flourishing.” (Number one New York Times best-selling author Adam Grant)
Journalist and screen/life balance expert Catherine Price argues persuasively that our always-on, tech-addicted lifestyles have led us to obsess over intangible concepts such as happiness while obscuring the fact that real happiness lies in the everyday experience of fun. We often think of fun as indulgent, even immature and selfish. We claim to not have time for it, even as we find hours a day for what Price calls Fake Fun - bingeing on television, doomscrolling the news, or posting photos to social media, all in hopes of filling some of the emptiness we feel inside.
In this follow-up to her hit book, How to Break Up with Your Phone, Price makes the case that True Fun - which she defines as the magical confluence of playfulness, connection, and flow - will give us the fulfillment we so desperately seek. If you use True Fun as your compass, you will be happier and healthier. You will be more productive, less resentful, and less stressed. You will have more energy. You will find community and a sense of purpose. You will stop languishing and start flourishing. And best of all? You’ll enjoy the process.
Weaving together scientific research with personal experience, Price reveals the surprising mental, physical, and cognitive benefits of fun, and offers a practical, personalized plan for how we can achieve better screen/life balance and attract more True Fun into our daily lives - without feeling overwhelmed.
Groundbreaking, eye-opening, and packed with useful advice, The Power of Fun won’t just change the way you think about fun. It will bring you back to life.
Critic Reviews
“The Power of Fun makes the case that to be happy, healthy, and productive, we must get into the habit of prioritizing fun. It’s a practical, evidence-backed plan for how to create True Fun in our lives, and an argument that fun isn’t optional, but essential.” (Charles Duhigg, author of the New York Times best sellers The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better)

Maybe I’m not the target audience
I hate to leave a less than great review. This is totally subjective and isn’t meant to take away from the work the author put into this book.
I really enjoyed a lot of the discussion about attention, phone use, and what true fun is and is not. Where things went south for me personally, was with the personal stories that, at times, seemed just about bragging and barely connected to the point of the chapter. (Looking at you, lingerie for lawyers anecdote.)
I also didn’t care for the discussion comparing everything to the evils of “the obesity epidemic” when there is so much recent research and evidence that the whole premise behind that “epidemic” was flawed from the beginning. When people on the upper end actually live longer than people in the lower end of the bmi scale, I just couldn’t connect with that entire section and kept thinking it came across as very fatphobic.
As a mom of four little ones, I just don’t see myself being able to keep journals analyzing the fun in my day… not because I scroll social media or spend pointless hours on my phone either, but because I’m truly that busy with all of my responsibilities. I genuinely think the author does not realize the difference in peoples lives because I’m very privileged and still do not have time for this. I think the target audience is not parents with four young kids, homeschooling, trying to survive a pandemic, and with a ton of responsibilities every day. Maybe this wasn’t the right book at the right time for me.

This book isn't fun.
The repetitiveness of the words "true fun" and the mundane narration was absolutely dreadful. I got through the prologue and almost to the end of chapter 1. I tried to convince myself that I need to give it time, but it's seriously anything but fun to listen to.

Good practical advice for those of us who’ve lost our zest
The advice was sound. It was backed by plenty of evidence and support. Lots of great anecdotes to keep the reader entertained. You will get something good out of it.
The main critique I have was really it was longer than it really needed to be. Reading a book about fun is only kind of fun and certainly not true fun so let’s break it down and get right to it!
I still greatly appreciate the work that Catherine put into this book and how it will affect my life going forward.

“Fun isn’t just the result of human thriving, it’s the cause of it.” Honestly- one of the better “self-help” books I’ve listened to in a long while. It is a bit gloom and doom for a little bit in the beginning, but it helps understand the power that fun can have in your life.

Very repetitive.
The narrator was great. I enjoyed her reading style with the book.
The content itself seems more geared for a 30 minute TED Talk.
It feels like to me the author took her TED Talk and said “I just need to add some fluff and repeat things in different ways to add a couple hours to this and I can sell it as an audiobook.”

Great combination of real life examples and academics
As someone that is addicted to phone (it’s just that darn Youtube!) AND couldn’t quite figure out where the fun went in my life, this book really helped me figure it out. I really appreciated the whole breaking down of the concepts and what is needed for fun to even exist. Author is so right. Author’s tying together real life experiences to the research done by others really brings the concepts to life. I loved the book and it encourages me to get out there in the world and try new things!
