Very Interesting, Poorly Organized

What did you love best about The Power of When?

This concept is very interesting and enabled me to take natural rhythms into account when organizing my personal schedule, from morning to evening. It also helped me to coordinate better with my husband and understand his optimal schedule.

What three words best describe Michael Breus’s voice?

Pleasant, lively, enjoyable

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

There are several types of "people" when it comes to sleep. I find myself understanding others better by figuring out which type they are and considering their actions in light of that.

Any additional comments?

Although I enjoyed the book, I found myself to be a bit of an outlier. I took the quiz five times and each time I was deemed a dolphin. However, my husband and I both thought I was a lion. But I trusted the expert in this case and followed the dolphin schedule for two weeks, very stringently. Unfortunately, it was a complete failure for me. Just about every aspect of the schedule conflicted with what my body was telling me and I did not adjust to it. So I re-read the sections on the lion type and decided to try that instead. The lion schedule feels so natural to me and makes me feel happy, healthy, and rested. So, despite what the quiz told me, I am now 100% sure that I am a lion and my husband agrees.
For those readers who did not find this beneficial or accurate to their natural rhythms, I would encourage you to try the other schedules in this book before giving up on it. If one of them works well for you, then the added effort will be worth it.
Another criticism I have regards the organization of the book. It is very choppy, difficult to navigate, and not intuitive in format. It almost seems like the first draft before being professionally edited. I wonder if it was put together hastily and published without sufficient editing time? I do appreciate the content, and I hope that future editions will be better formatted.

Good information, poor format.

The information is interesting however I have to listen to all the different types for each chapter (or spend double the time to skip to my type).

If you are only interested in your type and how it effects you, buy the book not the audio.

Interesting subject let down by audio book format

Unfortunately, this is really difficult to listen to as an audio book due to the chronotype classification questionnaire which is read at the beginning of the book as well as difficulty skipping to specific sections dealing with your chronotype. I listen to books in the car during long drives and this one just didn't work out so well.

I think Dr. Breus did a fine job with the narration and the story still interests me a good deal but I'll need to listen to this one when I'm not driving.

This book is nothing short of amazing!

Even though (as I was pleased to find), I was already implementing a lot of tips from the book, I got so many other useful lifestyle tips (professional, personal and miscellaneous) that I have decided to start implementing...and I can definitely see the positive effects after only a week.

Even when it comes to the ideas that weren't so new to me, I was fascinated by the explanations behind them. They were backed by scientific papers and references (all listed in the book, of course), but in a simple, nonchalant manner.

What I loved most about the book was it's thorough, systematic organization, which makes it easy to understand and, what's even more important, to skim through after reading. This is a book that I will definitely have to have on my bookshelf and that I will return to many many many times.

Dare I say it...this may be the most useful lifestyle/productivity book (at least on a general level) that exists out there at the moment.

Detailed info, difficult to implement

I'm a shift worker. I guess I'm just doomed.

The book is a treasure chest of knowledge, perhaps sometimes even overwhelming in abundance. It has a clear structure that is easy to follow and it offers a lot of practical advice. You could use this book to completely re-design your daily rhytm for optimal performance.

That is, if you have the freedom to do so. I suspect many of us don't. We work at times appointed to us by the employer and don't have much say in it.

Without that freedom the book may leave you frustrated and disappointed. It doesn't feel great to know you're screwing up your health trying to make ends meet. We all know working irregular and late hours isn't good for us. After reading the book I feel even more bad about it.

Oh, well. I'll take what I can from the info now, and will start considering other job possibilities.

Now I understand...

What did you love best about The Power of When?

Great information and many "no wonder why" moments for me as I listened to the book. Also a great book to discuss over dinner with friends. I had them take the power of when quiz and we discussed their chrono-types.

What did you learn from The Power of When that you would use in your daily life?

I've changed my daily habits to better coincide wth my type (lion). For example, I don't drink caffeinated coffee until late morning/early afternoon, and trying to work out in afternoon. I also am working to get my kids on better sleep schedule so they stay on their right bio-rythym.

awesome book

I love how the author actually presents his findings with not only his knowledge but with actually study results. I knew alot of the things in this book but I never pin pointed stuff because I thought it was just me. it was really cool to hear/read the science in this book. I loved this book and bought 4 copies of it to give to family and friends.

Review

It was an interesting read. I think some things were applicable, but then others weren't or didn't seem applicable to my life.

The chronorhythme were good to learn about, but I feel like it could even be taken a step further. I think there are people that are between maybe a lion and a bear, or bear and wolf.

chronotypes are worth thinking about

I have implemented some changes and they do make a difference. Credible information. Worthwhile.
