Publisher's Summary

Created in the Emperor's own image, the primarchs had long thought themselves to be princes of the universe and masters of their own destiny - they led the Space Marine Legions in glorious conquest of the galaxy, and no enemy of the Imperium could stand against them. However, even amongst this legendary brotherhood, the seeds of dissent had been sown long before the treacherous Warmaster Horus declared his grand heresy.

Find out the deepest mysteries of the primarchs. Who is in control of Fulgrim's body - him, or a daemon? What happens when the Alpha Legion fights against itself? Just what secrets is the Lion keeping? And what could the tragic Ferrus Manus have done to prevent himself from becoming a head shorter?

Mixed bag

Four novellas centered around different primarchs. The first two are trash, the third average and the fourth excellent. Only recommended for dedicated fans of the series. Otherwise, borrow from a friend if possible.

Last Story Was Good

I found the first two stories disappointing. The last story was an Alpha Legion story and it was well done. As always, the narrators were exceptional.

Great collection

If you like the Alpha Legion, get ready for one of the best short stories in all of 40k featuring them.

25% are worth your time

There are 4 stories in here. One of them is torture porn with the EC. It's not BAD. It is GRAPHIC but fitting. Amazing to think this is the toned down draft. The next two stories suck. The iron hands one is full and does nothing for the overarching plot. The dark angels one, well the lion instantly ruins a plot line that has been building for 2 whole novels and a short story before coming to this point and in one tantrum he ends it. The Alpha Legion one though is worth the credit you'll use to get this one. Wish it was novel length.

Sean Barrett Steals the Show

WOW, WOW, WOW!! I’m already a fan of anthologies, and I’d read The Serpent Beneath on my own, but Sean Barrett’s narration is simply and without exaggeration, THE FINEST, most spine tingling reading I have ever experienced in an audiobook!!

I’m off to pick up The Name of the Rose, simply because he’s the Narrator… EXCELLENT, excellent work!!

And now "Astartes" means just that much more. And the other stories are cool as well.

Good if partially blind (or headless?)

Was a good book, but like every book in the Horus Heresy series involving a primarch it beats you over the head with foreshadowing.

Like come on. We get it. Ferrus gets his head chopped off.

Hydra Dominatus

Loved the stories. They were rich with lots of lore on the worlds of 40k. The four star rating on performance is because I wished the sections were better annotated.

3 great books

3 excellent short stories (no spoilers), first follow up from 'Fulgrim' about the emperor's children.
Second on Iron Hands (first time listening on anything on those) and last on Alpha Legion, you can listen to the HH book 'Legion' but it's not a must think, good performance on them all

falsely advertised

this offers no original information on the primarchs , 4 badly written and boring short stories, story 1. fulgrim gets tortured by his sons for being possessed till he brings up making a city of mirrors and then instantly forget about the possession that's the whole story. second story is about the iron hands and you go from thinking they are a cool legion that never got a chance to shine (book 5 fulgrim) to thinking their primarch was incompetent to say the least and that trait seems to pass on to his sons. They fall into a elder trap that turns their cybernetics against them and leads to at least 50% casualties, so one of them chops off his cybernetics and is treated like a utter retard by his brothers who just watched half of them die to their own cybernetics. Story 3 is slow but actually turned out to be a good one however ends too quickly ones it picks up. Story 4 is classic alpha legion cloak and dagger stuff and is pretty boring, basically they had a traitor and had to clean house a bit and its underlying message is trust, incredibly boring. I honestly would not waste time or money on this, this advances the story in no way whatsoever and is just 3 terrible stories and one mediocre one .

About time

After listening to a lot of the HH books, Finally this must be one of the best performed ive heard.

The stories are good though the first and second could do with being in reverse order.

The different narrators are great at the roles they read.

Weakest so far

The fulgrim one was cartoonish and a bit silly, the ferrus manus one was just dumb and ferrus seems even lamer and dumber now, the lion one was stupid and had el Johnson doing some dumb shit, it dragged too. The omegon one was probably the best and was actually worth it.

Not the best

A lot of this felt like filler material, doesn't really advance the story of the heresy or the characters particularly. the dark angels story was the best but too short and without any realy conclusion. The voice acting was decent overall.

A decent set of stories

I really enjoy the Horus Heresy stories especially the ones regarding the Primarch's so this was a great listen! Although it must be said, none of these stories actually do much to further the series so if you're looking for that, you can definitely skip this one :)

Four short stories. 3 of them are really good

The iron hands story is a bit meh. The fulgrim one is classically messed up. The dark angels and alpha legion stories are pretty great. The alpha legion one particularly has a different tone and feel compared to the standard warhammer stories and stands out for me.

Primarchs

I always struggle with these shorter stories due to a massive amount of information being chopped into 4 stories, instead of the same depth in just one. However, this was a very good selection of stories, and the Narrator is fantastic. A voice like grinding rocks is very fitting when learning about these giants in the steps towardq the Heresy.

Hit and miss

Fulbright and The Lion were very good, the rest were filler I am afraid. Just not up to standard.

Some amazing writing. Some average writing.

Some fantastic stories. Some not so. Some fantastic narration.. Some ok. Its a good mix up to progress the stories of some of the primarchs and their legions. Definitely worth it.

Good second half

As the other reviews say the first 2 stories leave a lot to be desired, but the second half definitely make up for the slow start.
