Story
Jerry Grey is known to most of the world by his crime-writing pseudonym, Henry Cutter - a name that has been keeping readers at the edges of their seats for more than a decade. Recently diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's at the age of 49, Jerry's crime-writing days are coming to an end. His 12 books tell stories of brutal murders committed by bad men, of a world out of balance, of victims finding the darkest forms of justice.

Story
Joe is in control of everything in his simple life - both his day job as a janitor for the police department and his "night work". He isn't bothered by the daily news reports of the Christchurch Carver, who, they say, has murdered seven women. Joe knows, though, that the Carver killed only six. He knows that for a fact, and he's determined to find the copycat. He'll punish him for the one then frame him for the other six. All he needs now is to take care of all the women who keep getting in his way, including his overprotective mother.

Story
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

Nine strangers receive a list with their names on it in the mail. Nothing else, just a list of names on a single sheet of paper. None of the nine people know or have ever met the others on the list. They dismiss it as junk mail, a fluke - until very, very bad things begin happening to people on the list. First, a well-liked old man is drowned on a beach in the small town of Kennewick, Maine. Then, a father is shot in the back while running through his quiet neighborhood in suburban Massachusetts.

An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Publisher's Summary
Cameron and Lisa Murdoch are successful crime-writers. They have been on the promotional circuit, joking that no one knows how to get away with crime like they do. After all, they write about it for a living.
So when their 7 year old son Zach goes missing, naturally the police and the public wonder if they have finally decided to prove what they have been saying all this time - are they trying to show how they can commit the perfect crime?
Paul Cleave is currently dividing his time between his home city of Christchurch, New Zealand, where all of his novels are set, and Europe, where none of his novels are set. His novels have so far been translated into 20 languages. He has won the Saint-Maur book festival's crime novel of the year, has been shortlisted for the Ned Kelly award, the Edgar Award, the Barry Award, and has won the Ngaio Marsh award three times for NZ crime fiction.
Critic Reviews
Uses words like lethal weapons.
-- New York Times
Tense, thrilling, touching. Paul Cleave is very good indeed.
-- John Connolly, NYT bestselling author
Cleave writes like the fine-tuned punches of a middleweight boxer - with short sharp jabs to the solar plexus that make you gasp. The Kiwi crime writer scores another knock-out punch with his latest novel... The pace and the carnage accelerate toward a climax lasting for several pages and leaving you breathless.

Quite an addicting read!
Such a thrilling story!
I honestly couldn't stop listening until the very end, and the author completely held my attention through out!
The first half was admittedly more exciting and mysterious than the latter, but you're still left feeling relatively curious about what exactly went down.
Despite the audiobook being 12+ hours long, the reading time absolutely flew by, and I would definitely recommend picking this up if you're looking for an addicting thriller!
Really glad to have finally read a book from Paul Cleave! Will definitely be checking out more of his works! :)

Unpleasant and unbelievable
A thoroughly unpleasant, over-long and completely unbelievable novel delivered in a monotone at one monotonous pace.
