Reader Ruins the Meter

The reader keeps breaking the meter.
1. He fails to emphasize some mid-sentence rhymes, for example.
2. He keeps pausing for (melo) dramatic emphasis where the rhythm absolutely requires the he keep going smoothly.
3. He fails to run together syllables when the meter requires it.
4. He does not know the intended pronunciation of some words, breaking rhymes and rhythm.

It's so distracted that it ruins enjoyment of the poem.

It sounds wrong

He mispronounced Lenore and doesn’t have any of the rhythm this poem deserves. So many better performances of this poem

The Best Reading of The Raven

I've been a fan of Poe since an elementary school teacher read, quite possibly, The Raven and The Pit and the Pendulum to my class. Later, in high school forensics competitions, The Raven was always a popular poetry reading. There's been a common through line with practically every reading of Poe I've heard in my life, even by Vincent Price. Every reader succumbs to the sing-song rhythm of the verse, which even at its best, diminishes the story to some degree.

Dominic West does not fall into the sing-song rhythm that so many do. I hear his approach to the story as an actor would approach a play script written in verse, like Shakespeare's plays. Yes, you do hear the rhymes as West acts this story but it's supplementary. This actor's approach to the story as opposed to a literary scholar's approach is what makes it superior to any previous reading of The Raven I've ever heard.

Brilliant

We need more works from Dominc West. Much more. Texts of any sort come to life under his performance.

Didn't like the narrator

I understand that this is purely a matter of personal preference, but the narrator just didn't work for me. I'm apparently in a small minority of people with this opinion, so don't let my taste stop you from listening to this one.

brilliant

Beautifully performed every word and every line from the inflections to the pauses was perfect. This is the best rendition of the Raven I have ever heard. Stunning, superb, captivating are just some words trying to encompass the magnificence of this performance.

Dominic West is a FANTASTIC narrator!

I really loved this. It was performed beautifully.
I hope Audible has more selections with him performing narration in the future.

Impressed

There is a subtle beauty to the bitterness of this emotion. I have never cared much for things of renown, but this title is deserving.
