Now, however, one has been found by the unlikeliest of wielders: Sampson Gaard, a blind but ambitious prince with something to prove. Young wizards coming of age in a time of war... Will they be ready? Eynon was excited to leave his village and set off on his wander year. He’d turned sixteen today, and hoped for at least a few adventures. At high noon, he arrived a crossroads and saw a shimmer of silver in the mud. It was a thin and dirty oval, about the size of his palm. He washed it with squirts of water from his goatskin, then marveled at what was revealed.

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

In the Alliance capital, young Wit has just been promoted from apprentice to full wizard - and saddled with the very unglamorous task of traveling to a distant iron mine to inspect it for fraud. Worse yet, he's partnered with Wa'llach, a drunken dwarven prisoner who's killed more people than most plagues. Yet those skills are about to become very handy.

Publisher's Summary
Nothing will be as it was. Cities will crumble to ash. Ashen wastes will become lush and fertile. Rulers will serve, and servants will rule.
Pentamuria, the world of five kingdoms, is in a time of change. The power of the nobles and mages is threatened. War is upon them, although they do not know yet when or with whom. Thus, the mages are gathering in their capital, Ringwall, to prepare together against any possible enemy.
At this time, the orphan boy Nill is found by the Druids. He possesses considerable magical skills. So he is taken to Ringwall, where he is to be trained in the magical arts alongside his fellow students. Nill, who is an outsider, shows no respect for the traditions of the magical world, and challenges the ways of the mages.
Soon this mages start to ask themselves: Could this powerful stranger bring the foretold end of their reign?
If yes, Nill has to be dealt with. By whatever means....

Much too long for the story distance traveled
The author was skilled in his prose and the narrator in his telling and even the story itself was a rather unique take on a Fantasy epic. The book itself fit comfortably into a coming-of-age category, what with the protagonist and his two side-kicks being in their early teens. Also, each of the teens were interestingly unique in terms of their backgrounds. One being something of a half-breed (mixture of mage and mundane parents), another being of witch magic and the protagonist being odd but known to possess some form of unknown power.
During the telling, I was initially impressed with the time the author took to carefully and slowly have the trio exhibit their abilities; along with providing an abundance of detail of the world and places they visited. This started to become tedious, bordering on didactic, about a quarter of the way through and continued throughout the novel. So much so, that much more time was spent on explaining the intricacies of surrounding (buildings, wall, fauna, etc) than moving the story along.
So it was that this book, while not badly written, was one that I wasn't disappointed at finally coming to the end.
I will not continue on with the saga.

Good story
Its a decent story. The flow was a bit off here and there. I never felt the build up for the final two/three battles...they felt rushed and lacked in depth. I will probably listen to a sequel, but I am concerned the story could fall apart easily. I subtracted a couple stars for this, the storyline is walking a very delicate edge.
As a side note, Mr. Perkins did a decent job through much of the book, but in several instances the voices of two or more characters began to merge. It became difficult to figure out who said what. I subtracted a star for this, but it is really a solid 3.9 star job.

Typical good vs. bad story
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It would need more plot twist. The story skips around and it seems that the author assumes that the reader understands the story full line without explanation of why things happen
Has The Reign of Magic turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. just this book
Which character – as performed by Derek Perkins – was your favorite?
All were well performed
Do you think The Reign of Magic needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes. But a with a much deeper story.

Obtuse, slow and boring
This is the first audiobook that I've been unwilling to finish. I managed about 80% before giving up. The story didn't flow at all, the characters are uninspiring and many elements are thrown in by the author with little or no explanation behind them, leaving the listener to scrabble to catch up. I wouldn't recommend.

I am so glad to have stumbled across this author. This is the first book of the series and I enjoyed every second of it. A fantasy masterpiece. I have downloaded the second novel straight away and I’m hoping there are many more. I have listened to other books by the same narrator and this is just another gem. So easy to get lost in the fantasy world of magic. I highly recommend this story.

Any additional comments?
I loved this book, great characters that I became very invested with, really nice pace, and the author definitely left me wishing that the second book was out already. Yes its a little Harry Potter, but then all book since those films of that type are compared to those films, and for me this doesn't detract at all from the story. Derek Perkins is as always just so cool with his character voices.
Overall I would highly recommend this book.
