Publisher's Summary

A shocking and hopeful account of one woman's extraordinary courage to face her past and embrace truth in order to help others find hope and healing.

In The Relentless Courage of a Scared Child, Tana Amen shares her incredible story of transformation - of growing up in poverty, a bullied latch-key kid raised on sugary cereal and junk food, to becoming a world-renowned food and fitness expert.

Her challenging past of neglect, poverty, sexual abuse, thyroid cancer, and bouts of anxiety and depression set her on a path to find healing. Through her remarkable journey, we see more clearly the light that can shine through our own broken places and ultimately heal us: body, mind, and soul.

At once tragic and heartwarming, Tana’s story integrates cutting-edge psychology and proven wellness techniques from the Amen Clinics in a moving exploration of the healing available to each one of us, no matter the pain in our past.

“What a journey! With in-your-face honesty, Tana reveals how she was able to turn her pain into purpose. For anyone who has been faced with unspeakable loss, this message is so important.” (Jay Shetty, number one New York Times best-selling author of Think Like a Monk, storyteller, purpose coach, and former monk)

Resilence and growth despite a lifetime obstacles

This book was a thoughtful memoir of a resilent woman who overcame neglect, a fractured family, poor choices, health crises, and her family legacy. Through persistence, the search for truth, and surrendering her anger and bitterness, she found hope and health. She is a living testimony of courage, fearlessness, perseverence, and divine life appointments. I appreciated her honesty and candor. She tells it like it is and pulls no punches. Whether you are a person seeking faith or seeking to overcome a lifetime of struggles, this will encourage you. She is real. She is honest. And she allows herself to be vulnerable. An encouragement for anyone who feels they aren't good enough. It is possible to overcome hard circumstances. It is possible to change your course. And with just the right people and some divine intervention, healing can occur. The message resonated, I am cared for and worthy of being loved. I can live a healthier life. I can overcome my circumstances through support, faith, therapy, and healthier choices.

Not what I was expecting...

It's not my place to criticize someone else's life story. This is just not what I was expecting. I struggled to finish it because it never turned to what I was expecting- insights. The storyline stayed at the narrative reflection level and never conceptualized the learnings as I had understood would be the case from a webinar with the author.
It's her personal story. I could write my own book...many of us could. It is in allowing others to draw connections and learnings from it that makes it personal for others. I missed that in this book. And for that I truly believe it's way too long. Too long.

Great story that I really enjoyed listen to

The story is extremely profound, inspiring, it helped me to look at so many things at different perspective. Besides, the narrator is really wonderful, the way she read it is unsurpassed

Love

There’s something about hearing someone else’s story that helps you heal from your own and also in my case want to work on the past. I do wish Tana narrated because now I will always think she sounds this way and when I see her be reminded she does not. Good read!

accidentally appreciated

Having finished the most recent book in a Fantasy series by Brandon Sanderson (that interestingly includes characters with mental illness) I searched my wish list for another book to listen to. I had been building up this list after researching resources and programs to help my family, my business, and various other self help types of things, and anytime I came across a book title, I searched it in audible to read later. I briefly scanned the various titles and thought this one sounded like something that might help my child who might have anxiety. It was not at all what I expected and I can't remember why I put it in my wish list or where I saw the title. The story is heartbreaking, but rewarding. It is insiteful into the life of someone who faced a lot of adversity and trials and pulled through, with strength she gain on her own and help from her amazing husband. She ultimately turned her experience around and used it to help others. I am now to going to find out more about the Amen couple and their research in hopes that it can help my family.

Real and Beautiful. A must listen!!

I am touched and honored that Tana would share her story in such an honest and open way. Her openess is such an encouragement to get out of our comfort zones and be willing to get rid of those automatic negative thoughts of ourselves and see ourselves as God sees us. I'm a work in progress, changing those negative thoughts of myself. Thank you, Tana. Definitely buying a copy for my Mom and Sister.
